Could you draw the Land of Mist and Chains (LOMAC), a land with a giant chain snaking around it that ends up in a giant crater?
Here you go !
Hello! I need help understanding some things. I went to four different sessions of psych testing, 2 hours long each, where I would have to read passages out loud, do the block design test, memorize and draw abstract designs, ect. When I got the results back, the psychologist said I had (or at least had something similar to) dyslexia. When I would read out loud I would sometimes stumble over or mispronounce words that I'm familiar with because I "dropped" or "switched" letters (1/3)
(2/3) this is confusing to me because in everything involving the liberal arts (reading comprehension, writing, spelling, ect), I'm in the 99% percentile. I had a 12+ reading level in 3rd grade. In addition to that, I'm skeptical of the diagnosis because both myself and my younger brother were hyperlexic as kids, and hyperlexia is the neurological opposite of dyslexia. Being able to read so well at such a young age seems to rule out dyslexia, but
(3/3) I can't argue that I don't mix up letters and words in a way that looks EXACTLY like dyslexia. Do you have any insight??? I know that I did really poorly on the block test, so is it possible that it's mostly just a spacial thing? I don't understand how I could have a reading disability if I'm.. not bad at reading, like, AT ALL. Thanks in advance, and sorry for my ignorance on the subject!
Response: well, Im not a professional and I didn't give you the diagnoses but Dyslexia isnt technically an official diagnoses anymore. They broke it up to more specific areas of difficulty with reading, spelling etc. Brains are super complicated I don't have Dyslexia, however I have problems flipping letters, spelling, and translating the written word into spoken language, meaning I mispronounce things when reading out loud. but i'm a very fast and skilled reader with a large vocabulary.
I don't know as much about reading and spelling related disabilities as I do about math related ones, but you should ask your parents about allowing you to read through your official diagnostic report. they go really in depth about how your brain works instead of just giving you a one name diagnoses. so it may explain why you were diagnosed as having something similar to dyslexia while still being a strong reader.
generally the tests are to figure out how your brain functions not just skill level in an area. you may have certain thinking patterns and difficulties that relate to the dyslexia area of the DSM 5, but strengths that cancel out some of the symptoms. and sometimes things you don't even realize could affect an area of your brain do, like I had no idea memory problems could contribute to writing letters backwards, they don't seem tied together in any way, but that's apparently why I flip letters. because I have sequential memory problems.
I definitely think you should read through your full report, it really helped me figure out why I was diagnosed with things that didn't make much sense to me. if that doesn't clear it up, I would contact the person who gave you the diagnoses, they may be able to re explain. I know the person who gave me mine told me I could call if I had any questions.
sorry I couldn't give you more of an answer, I'm not a specialist and I don't know enough about how your brain works. dont apologize for lack of knowledge! asking questions is never something to be ashamed of!
