The exhibit opens tomorrow. It's the only authorized Bruce Lee exhibit in the US/anywhere other than China, which is pretty dope. GO SEE IT!!

Last week, I learned a whole lot about the history of filipino-americans in Seattle, specifically the history of cannery workers who would work in Alaska during the summertime and come back to seattle off season. It made me wonder if my grandmother's brother was a cannery worker or a migrant worker in the farms of California when he immigrated here. He's the only relative I am aware of who came to the U.S. before the 1940s.

Cannery workers were primarily men who worked in canning fresh Salmon. Many Filipino male immigrants worked in the canneries. I did not know much about this history until now. I also did not know that Chinatown then used to be bustling with Filipino community in the 1920s and 1930s on 6th Ave. and King St., right here in Chinatown-International District.

I find myself blurting knowledge to my friends and family nowadays because I frequent this district often when I am not here at the Wing. I'm fascinated to know the history of every storefront now, whether now abandoned or still thriving. 

Today I finally had a chance to watch the interview of Uncle Jimmy that plays on the TV inside of the Yick Fung Co. store front that is part of our historic tour. I also watched the videos that play in each of the rooms that are open for exhibit during that tour in the historic Freeman Hotel. 

I love learning the history of APIAs in Seattle/Washington. It's so important to know who came before us and how their stories are connected to us and the current social climate of immigration today.

Today I ate some delicious bbq, fresh home made potato salad and apple juice sweet tea all graciously cooked and shared by Donnie of the Sun May Co. in Canton Alley.

It was a beautiful experience to eat in the sun with folks passing by and people who live and work in the neighborhood. I always love wandering into the Sun May Co. to find treasures. And today, I ended up watching a documentary filmed in the 90s "Finding Home in Chinatown: The Kong Yick Buildings" and Donnie himself was one of the interviewees in the film. I learned that these buildings are over a century old, and generations of families lived in these buildings and in Canton Alley.

It's awesome to see that even though former residents and owners have moved on or passed on, that there's still some semblance and memory of them as the Sun May Co is still there and we were all there today eating together. It's funny how history becomes present and present becomes history all in a flash. 

I'll finish this post with a tidbit from an essay I read today by the former director, Ron Chew, in which he shared about past exhibits and the uniqueness of the Wing Luke Museum. There have been an array of powerful exhibits.

As some of you may or may not know, the exhibits at the Wing Luke are created by the people, such as a past exhibit called: "Executive Order 9066: 50 Years Before and 50 Years After" was the first one and it garnered over 50,000 visitors in the span of seven months!

Ron Chew stated that the exhibit "affirmed the restorative power of the oral tradition and the first person voice of ordinary people. It gave sanction, in a museum setting, to the notion of students, non professionals and elders as scholars and lead decision makers, rather than token advisers."

There's a lot of history just on one block, let alone this whole city. I encourage all of you to smile and greet the Uncles, Aunties, kids, Grandmas and Granpas that you see taking walks and sitting around Chinatown and the ID. They probably have almost a century of stories to share! And I'm sure you all have some amazing stories too!

Happy birthday, Wing Luke! The late Seattle City Councilman and campaigner for equal housing rights for Seattle's Black and Asian American communities would have turned 89 today. He tragically died in a plane crash in the Cascades during his term of office in 1965, when he was only 40 years old.

Seattle's Wing Luke Museum of the APA Experience Federally Recognized!

Seattle's Wing Luke Museum is now affiliated with with the National Park Service as one of the many properties that contribute to the rich heritage of the U.S. The Museum is named after Wing Luke, the first Asian American in public office in the Pacific Northwest. 

National Park Service will also initiate an "Asian American Pacific Islander Theme Study" urged by Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar who said that the study is important to recognize "Chinese immigrants who built the railroads across the country to the Japanese American internment camps of World War II, these are stories that will be part of the next chapter in our continued efforts to better tell the story of all of America and her people."
