616 fic - First Meeting

Written pretty much in one go for the @winteriron-week! The prompt was “FIrst Meeting”. It’s also a fill for the Bucky Barnes Bingo, for the square “Forgiveness”. Bucky startles from his breakfast and freezes. Tony is sitting across from him, still focused on his plate, pushing his scrambled eggs around as if he hadn't just asked a question both inane and terrifying.

It takes a moment before everything clicks into place.

"That thing with Osborn, when you ended up braindead and in the hospital... you don't remember what happened before that?"

Tony shrugs in a show of false nonchalance; clearly it’s costing a lot to bring the question up.

"Well, I do remember things from before," he hedges. "Just nothing between the registration act and well, Osborn. I've seen the reports, the newspaper articles. And Natasha said we worked together. But there was obviously no report for that, no information about the Director of Shield secretly meeting with an unregistered vigilante."

Tony smiles ruefully and Bucky can't help but reach over and take Tony's hand in his own.

"It doesn't matter," Bucky finally says. "We're here now, and the how it started doesn't matter."

He pulls Tony into a hug and doesn't let go until Tony is chuckling and complaining about their breakfast getting cold.

"...Tell me?"

"We met at a bar. Just two guys trying to forget their problems. I heard you order some ridiculous mocktail and looked over, and when I saw you, I knew I wanted to get to know you."

Bucky turns to look at Tony, a loving gaze he only shows the people he trusts most. Tony looks back at him with a blank face before shaking his head and huffing out a laugh.

"You're full of shit, you know that?"

Bucky uses the opportunity to tackle Tony into the pillows behind them and smothers him in kisses.

"It's a nice story though, isn't it?" Bucky says, barely pulling away enough to speak.

Tony reels him in again, smiling into their kiss.

"We met on the job, basically. We were both after the same guy, and I was impressed by your strategy. It was almost like how I would have done it. We took him down together, and I saved your ass and asked you out afterwards."

Tony sits up halfway from where he’s lying next to Bucky in their huge bed. He squints at Bucky, then shakes his head and lets himself flop down again.

"That sounds closer to the truth than last time, but I can still see through you, you lying liar who lies." Tony grins at him and snuggles closer.

They stay like that, just enjoying the moment.

"For real though. How did we meet?" Tony sounds carefully neutral, but he can't hide his worry completely, not from Bucky.

Bucky looks away and his eyes go distant as he tries to avoid the memory slipping to the forefront of his mind. The anger, the pain he'd felt after Steve was gone, and the days filled with hatred, all laser-focused on Tony, the man he blamed for Steve's death. He'll never be able to forget how he fought Tony, aimed to kill, ripped the faceplate off the armour. The view of his rifle’s muzzle, a few inches from Tony's unprotected face.

So much could have gone wrong in that moment.

"Tony... it's.... not a good memory. Maybe you forgetting it is a blessing."

"You being here with me is something I barely dared to hope for," Tony whispers. Then he snorts from where he is curled up in Bucky's arms. "With everything I heard about my time as Director of Shield, I can't imagine that meeting you was even close to the worst thing that happened to me."

Bucky closes his eyes.

"I tried to kill you," he whispers.

Tony freezes in his arms and Bucky wants to take it back, to shove the words behind a locked door and never let them out.

But it's too late now.

Tony disentangles himself and for a moment, Bucky wants to keep holding on, afraid to lose the most important person in his life. But he lets go.

When Tony sits up and looks at Bucky, his eyes are soft and caring, though. He laces their fingers together for support.

"What happened?"

Bucky can't quite bring himself to look at Tony while he talks. "I was a mess after Steve's death. Blamed you for a lot, for basically everything, especially for Steve." He shakes his head. "Made up my mind that the only thing I could do about it was killing you."

Looking up, he searches Tony's eyes, afraid of what he might see there. "I'm so sorry, Tony."

Tony's hands are sure and steady as they pull him into a hug again, holding him tightly.

"What happened then?"

"It was thanks to you that we both made it out unharmed, really. Steve had sent you a letter, to tell you not to retire the mantle of Captain America, and to look out for me. So you did just that. Barely defended yourself while I attacked, tried to talk me down instead." Bucky gave a wobbly chuckle, willing himself to not cry.

"Steve told me later that making me the next Captain America wasn’t what he had meant. But you thought it was a good idea, you believed in me, even then.” Bucky looks at Tony in wonder at the memory.

"You know, you're probably in the top five of my favourite people who have also tried to kill me." Tony shrugs.

Bucky has to chuckle despite himself. "Not even top three? Do I at least take first place for people who tried to kill you and dated you?"

"Well maybe. You have strong competition there."

Tony grins at him, before sobering up again. "It really is all right. I don't blame you."

"I just— I could have destroyed everything, and I'd have never known—" Bucky is pulled into another hug as he tries to take a steadying breath. Tony's scent and the reassuring weight of his arms rarely fails to calm him.

"I'm so glad you stopped me, back then," Bucky confesses.

"Me too." Tony's smile still looks a bit shaky.

"Risking my life to meet you? Absolutely worth it."

Not Drunk Enough

@winteriron-week / day 3

Prompt: Bed Sharing / “I’m not drunk enough for this.” / Soulmates

“I’m not drunk enough for this.” Tony whispered, moving his eyes from the alcoholic drink in his hand, back to Bucky face and down to the little object in the other man hand.

"No Tony" Bucky murmured in a soft tone looking Tony in the eyes, seeing confusion moving behind them. "You are not drunk, you are not dreaming, and yes" Bucky stopped few second, just the time to go down on one knees and finally ask the question he was waiting to say from a long time. "Will you marry me?" Ended opening the little black box, revealing a simple white gold band, with a little aquamarine embedded in the middle.

"I..." Tony blinked once, twice, shaked his head a little and fell on his knees going to cup Bucky head between his hands, with a little smile growing bigger by the second. "YES!" Nearly screamed. "Yes, yes, yes, yes." Continued going to leave a little kiss with every single whispered yes.

Maybe in the middle of the gala with, people screaming and music blaring around them, wasn't the best way to make a proposal, but Tony never had what he wanted in the right way, and frankly he didn't care, he didn’t care at all, because he was happy for the first time in a long time.

WinterIron Day Five

Prompts: Celebration/ “Bad Timing?” / Prosthetic Arms @winteriron-week

For day five I chose celebration

Word Count: 245 Its short and sweet

   “You were- what?” Tony’s face is the perfect mixture of confusion, annoyance, exasperation, and a bit of anger. James rubs the back of his neck.

   “Well, I was trying to bake a cake and I set a timer and everything! It’s just- apparently I didn’t hear it and it got burnt and-”

   “And you almost burnt my house down.” Tony finishes. James raises an eyebrow.

   “Can this place even burn down?” Tony plants his hands on his hips and glares at him, the corner of his mouth twitching.

   “Not the point. Why were you even trying to make a cake in the first place?” James looks down at the floor.

   “For… you.”

   “For me? Why?”

   “Well you were telling me how you finally got the prothesis line rolling and you were so happy and excited, and this is a great thing Tony! I wanted to, I guess celebrate. It was just a thought.” Tony’s smile is soft as he comes and rests a hand on James’ cheek.

   “That is very nice of you and I very much appreciate the effort. But maybe you shouldn’t be left alone to bake. Hell, Vision was better than this.” James grimaces, his turn to glare at the other man.

   “We are not telling anyone about this.” The glint in Tony’s eyes makes him want to groan.

   “Oh, I am so telling everyone about this, the great Winter Soldier, the greatest assassin in forever, can’t bake a fucking cake.”

   “Tony!”

Neither Tony nor Bucky is very good at taking care of themselves. Or at asking for help. To make it easier they decided on a codeword, which had the added bonus of not alerting the other avengers to their distress.

It might not have worked as well as they thought.

Day 2: Weddings

A lovestory in five weddings

Tony and Bucky meet at a wedding. Get together at a wedding. Break up at a wedding. Weddings are definately not their cup of tea.

But... maybe it could be.

Day 3: Bed Sharing

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

I failed with this one because it ended up more than Tony/Bucky, but I’m adding it anyway because I did write it during the event and with the prompts provided and it was supposed to be winteriron, it just became more

A few of the avengers are sent to Canada to take care of another HYDRA-base, but the mission goes wrong before it even starts. Their jet is shot down and Tony falls into the water, then does all he can to hide his frozen state from his partners. What harm could walking around in drenched clothes, without shoes, during the Canadian winter do to the invincible Iron Man anyway?

A slip of the tongue

The team is out for a mission. They have to spend the night in a safehouse and two people need to share a bed. Tony volunteers, saying he'll sleep with anyone, and Bucky takes him up on the offer. And ops, maybe he wasn't supposed to, but now its's too late to take it back.

Day 4: Surprise Hugs / “I want a baby.”

Tony, Bucky and Peter are living happily together as a family, but Tony wants his family bigger.

Day 5: Celebration / “Bad timing?” / Prosthetic Arms

Brothers Lovers in Arms

Following the defeat of Thanos and the return of everyone who was snapped Tony shut himself away from the world as he poured all his energy into building himself a new arm. So okay, maybe isolating himself and causing his mental health to plummet wasn't the most productive way to go about it, but luckily his family was not going to leave it like that.

Day 6: “You should shut up now.”

You knock me off my feet

Bucky hates Tony and it's getting on the man's nerves. He tries mending the bridges, but Bucky keeps avoiding him. They work together, live together, and so maybe Tony has a small crush on the man, but that's not the reason he wants them to be able to talk to each other.

And maybe Bucky is avoiding Tony because of a completely different feeling than hate.

Day 7: “Move in with me.”

Where the trash goes

”Move in with me.” Tony blinked, stopped working and rolled out from under the car he was tinkering with. Bucky sank down to the floor and kissed him before he could get up. Tony returned the kiss but raised an eyebrow. ”What?” ”Move in with me.”

And that was that. Summa summarum of this week (ops that was a swedish expression, sorry):

- I have way too much fun with titles, even though I constantly complain about coming up with them

- I really need a lesson in how to write summaries

- I also need a lesson in shipping, but I think I did pretty good

- This was a lot of fun but next time I decide to participate in any shipweek I gotta start the stories ahead of time and not the day they’re for

- Sorry Tony, but you really are that much fun to harm (looking specifically at day 1, 3, 5 and 6)

- English is hard, writing is hard, and I would probably be a much better writer if I had help from a beta-reader or at least let the stories rest for two days or so before editing them

- But where would the fun be in that?

Mena’s Winteriron Week Masterpost

Day 1: Count on me 

Prompt:  First meeting

Summary: "For some reason, the Asset knew that the number seven was impressive, and when he was out of the base and no one was watching, he traced the outlines of it with his metal finger."

A soulmate tattoo shows how dangerous the soulmate is. Bucky's tattoo shows higher and higher numbers as time goes by. In the end, he finds the person behind the numbers, of course.

Summary: Steve Rogers, part-time wedding organizer, sets up everything as Sunset Bain wanted. The only problem presents itself when they're all at the wedding, and it turns out, the groom is not as willing as Sunset hoped. Luckily Bucky is there too, and the two of them comes to the rescue.

Summary: ”Are you sure there is no other way?” he asked Laura, hope thinly veiled in his voice.

The woman dared to give him a condescending look. "He’s your soulmate, Tony, I’m sure you two will be able to handle to be in the same room for a night."

If Strange was back, then the others must be too, then Peter…
