Initially I just wanted to make edits as the girls and professors being Akko’s confidants but when I opened photoshop, my hand slipped. Maybe I’ll try and do edits for the rest of the girls some day so here have their profiles in advance. PS I love everyone.

Birds of a Feather
"Was that really necessary?"
"Maybe not. But you can't deny that it was a spectacle to behold."
The two bickered on as if they just hadn't faced off with a group of shadows that were more troublesome than usual. This is routine for them, these two... what are they even? Friends? Not friends anymore but they should be again? Enemies? Enemies that care too much for each other? Comrades? Yes, perhaps comrades should be the operative term.
For now.
Now is all they have to work with. Right now they weren't Chariot or Croix, estranged friends that separated due to conflicting ideals. None of that exists now, not in this world, the only world where they could be someone else. Here in the world born from hearts, they don masks that reveal rather than hide their true selves. In any other world they may have fought each other.
But only here are they honest.
Only here, they are Crane and Crow: two birds of a feather.
"You've gotten bolder than I remember. You weren't exactly the hands-on type back then," Ursula comments thoughtfully.
"Times change and so have I. Besides, I can't let you get all the excitement now can I?" Croix teases with a smirk dancing on her lips.
"I think I would have preferred you behind the scenes. At least then I wouldn't have to worry so much about you." Ursula lets out a tired sigh. Granted she did use to perform even more dangerous stunts, that didn't make her heart calmer whenever Croix did her own reckless attacks.
"Awwww, so you do care," Croix coos and then laughs when she sees Ursula's face blossom into a wonderful shade of red. "I didn't know I had you so bewitched."
"We're both witches. So by that logic, you're bewitched by me too," Ursula huffs in defiance but it's not as convincing given how flustered she is.
Phantom Witches. That's the kind of bewitched they are.
No one really knows exactly what Phantom Witches do or how they do it but legends say that they have the power to change hearts. Chariot was the first Phantom Witch of this generation or so the rumors go. Well she certainly was the first to go public. She changed the hearts of many around the world and she did it all with a dazzling smile. Because of her, people started believing again. However, just as soon as a star is born, she faded out and was soon forgotten.
At least that's what the public knows. The truth is, Chariot had lost faith and with that loss was the loss of her powers. She was forced to retire and settle down as Ursula. Croix who had been supporting her all this time, was enraged by this. She decided to forge her own path and eventually take over. They separated and led themselves to believe that this was it for them.
Little did they know that a few years down the road, their fates would cross again.
Ursula upon meeting Akko, the newly awakened Phantom witch Nova, felt the tiniest flicker of hope within. And when the time came for her to step forward and defend her student, she found renewed faith. She didn't find Chariot, perhaps she never will, but she believes that it's actually Crane that she's been looking for all along. Crane is nothing like Chariot. Rather than a blindingly bright shine like Chariot, Crane's shine is a soft glow that is just as powerful.
Chariot shot across the sky like a shooting star, granting wishes only to those quick enough.
But Crane was not a shooting star. Crane is an origami folded with careful thoughtfulness. It doesn't disappear as soon nor does it make miracles out of thin air. Crane possesses bountiful fortitude and requires incredible patience.
And with enough hardwork and dedication, she too can grant wishes.
Croix on the other hand awakened to Crow through her own sheer willpower. That and it helped observing Chariot all throughout so she was able to construct the optimal situation to manifest an awakening. Unlike Chariot who shone like a star, Crow was as dark as the nightsky. An enveloping darkness that had no glimmer of her own, but no star can shine without it.
With her persona, she swore to succeed where Chariot had failed.
"What are the odds that our outfits are both bird-themed?" Ursula chimed brought up once. "This reminds me of the saying, 'birds of the same feather flock together'"
"Except we're both literally different species of birds," Croix corrects her matter-of-factly.
"You know what I mean." Ursula pouts at her.
"No, I don't. Crows and cranes are literally not birds of the same feather," Croix drops the fact as if Ursula should have known, as if she didn't already know that.
"They should add sarcasm to the list of what crows are good at."
"You know what else crows are good at? Murder."
"Umm, by 'murder' you mean a group of crows, right?"
"Sure, let's go with that."
"I honestly can't tell if you're joking or not."
"And I honestly can't tell which type of crane you are," Croix shoots back. "So are you a red-crowned crane because of your mask? Or are you a blue crane because of your hair?"
"Does it really matter?" Ursula tilts her head slightly, pondering.
"You're right, it doesn't. I'm better than you either way." Croix crosses her arms in self-proclaimed victory.
"I don't doubt that." Ursula doesn't even try to argue against her. In fact, she actually agrees with her and with too much enthusiasm. "If anyone's better than me, it's probably only you."
Which takes Croix by surprise. She shakes her head in disbelief. "Heh, it's not that fun if you just accept it."
There's a lull in the conversation, like a soft and content sigh.
"I feel like stretching my wings for a bit," Ursula says with a playful tone dancing on her lips. She shoots her a challenging gaze, one that she knows her friend cannot resist. "Hey, do you want to see which bird is faster?"
"Scientifically, it's the crow." Croix points out but the glint in her eyes tell her that this discussion isn't over just yet. She answers her challenge with a smug grin. "But I'd like to see you try anyways."
The two bird-masked make a dash so smooth, it's like watching actual birds in flight.
They may have lost Chariot in the past, but now is different. Now they had Crane and Crow. And together, they would take back what they once lost.
And maybe gain something more.
I asked about their gloves but then several hours later I finished drawing Croix and just couldn’t wait to color her gloves. So, her clothes is inspired from the three musketeers (Aramis’ if I’m not mistaken).
Waist pouch is obviously from original Croix design, bcs where would she put her weapon (aka smartphone). The corset is from Croix’s lab clothes, you know, the scene in which she’s all alone in her lab eating ramen and being a megalomaniac. Her pants is leather pants, bcos it’s Croix we’re talking abt, so yeah edgy aesthetics. Her gloves are grey to emphasize her gray & grey morality. Those black things on the lower part of Croix's red cape? Crow feathers, bcos our resident edgelord Croix Meridies has a theme.
