Tonight, Josh and I went to see “Cowspiracy” at the UICA. The movie honestly sucked- we didn’t like the personality of the guy in the movie and it was all over the place. But afterwards, The West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC) had two men speak. One was a professor at Calvin College about food ethics and philosophy and the other works for Vegan GR. They were honestly such great speakers and were really great at answering questions.
I asked them what advice they had for people considering going Vegan. This was met with an enthusiastic “DO IT!” but then followed by two pieces of advice from the professor guy.
1. Learn how to cook.
2. Look at Veganism as an aspiration, not an identity.
His advice really struck me. Veganism as an aspiration makes a lot more sense to me than the way I usually hear of it. He said that mistakes will be made and people will be critical (”that’s not vegan” or “are you wearing leather boots”) but you just have to do what you can do, forgive yourself, and keep going with the best of your ability. Veganism isn’t who you are but it’s a goal to strive for.
Also, he said learning to cook would help you make more foods and he also said to think about how you feel about the people that cook for you, if you learn to make food people will love you.
It was a great night and Josh and I decided that when we get our apartment (hopefully the next month or two) we will try to follow a mostly vegan diet
