Went for a mostly leopard seal look, with a bit of Mosasaur. I like how the pose came out. Their legs are very small and don't do much. How they fly is a mystery to all dragonkind and it's best not to question it.

hello creature! My I ask what your favorite headcanons are?

okay lemme do one for each character >:}< (side characters and dragons from Darkstalker Legends might be included later) Clay has dyslexia, but also has an excellent memory, so he has all of his siblings' favorite scrolls memorized (it took a lot of hard work and help from others, as much as it hurt his pride) Tsunami is actually really smart, she's just a hands-on learner and tends to rush through scrolls too fast to properly digest anything. she's also an extremely quick thinker, high street smarts and is able to form solid plans while on her feet. Glory has a fear of electric eels after reading about them in a scroll as a dragonet. she still sometimes has nightmares vaguely led by them (this is backed by actual canon btw, mentioned in The Lost Heir while everyone's in the electric eel prison). Starflight, when he was younger, read a story about an olden day NightWing animus who once created a telescope and enchanted it to reveal to him everything about the universe. the story went that the knowledge was so vast it stretched his mind to the breaking point, and drove him mad. Starflight has since had a deep fear and fascination towards outer space ever since. Sunny has dwarfism, and is also oddly flexible. she's no contortionist, but her ability to fit into tight spaces and rest in odd positions never ceases to baffle and give her siblings phantom pains in their own limbs whenever they watch her. Moonwatcher often walks in complete silence, a habit she picked up while she lived in the rainforest. This often causes her to spook a lot of dragons by just appearing behind them. Her soul-stare does not help with this either. Winter, right before he laughs, lets out a snort deep in his sinuses. He only lets himself do this when he's comfortable around people, otherwise it's a polite chuckle. He got his real laugh from Hailstorm. Kinkajou has seen the Goddesses and beat the devil in an arm wrestling match. she also makes really good mango juice. Turtle is really bad at talking about himself, yet somehow ends up with someone's whole life story at least once a month. He's a great listener, but a horrid talker. It's easier for him to get his thoughts down if he writes them out. Qibli paces whenever he's locked in talking about something, often doesn't even realize he's doing it. He thinks better when he's moving, sitting down for longer than 15 minutes is torture for him. He's also always drumming new beats with his talons when he's bored. Peril is actually a huge nerd about SkyWing customs and culture, mostly knowing what she does from her time with Osprey, and some of it from simply observing outside SkyWings. There are some times where she's unfortunately mistaken about some aspects, but she retains information surprisingly well, and can talk about it for hours. She puts Starflight to the test.

Ik that technically none of this would make sense in real life, and this type of evolution would only take place after a long time BUT A GIRL CAN DREAM OK.

SkyWings

“Don’t count your clutch before they hatch.” (Don't plan too much too soon)

“Gold is better than silver, but silver is better than nothing.” (If you can't do it perfectly, still try your best. Most dragons forget the second part.)

“‘Sorry’ can't suck the fire back in.” (The damage is done and now you're dead to me.)

“You been eating too much burnt meat or something?” (Are you nuts?)

“Stop all this smoke and use your fire.” (Stop rambling and get to the point already; or stop complaining and do something)

“Doesn't know his tail from his wings.” (Stupid or clumsy)

“You fly like a depressed pigeon.” (Slow flier)

“There's no fire in a rainstorm.” (Stop feeling sorry for yourself and get to work.)

“Nighttime is for the NightWings.” (What are you doing up? Go to sleep.)

“She’s all rattle, and no strike.” (Like all bark no bite)

“A diamond in a pile of quartz.” (Like a needle in a haystack)

“You’re watering the cactus and ignoring the sapling.” (You’re focusing on the wrong thing; barking up the wrong tree)

“Everyone thinks the camel looks silly until the dry season comes.” (Don't listen to them, they don't know how unique and strong you are)

MudWings

“Crocodile tears.” (Fake crying in order to gain sympathy)

“You can only catch a trout if your mouth is open.” (Be open to new experiences)

“If the tree gives away too much, it ends up as a stump.” (Don't let people take advantage of your generosity)

SeaWings

“Happy as a clam in high water.” (Very happy)

“The flying fish feels like a fool when it sees an osprey.” (Don't compare yourself to others, run your own race.)

“Plenty of fish in the sea.” (Plenty more opportunities to come.)

“You’ve got ink in your eyes.” (You're blind to something important)

“Lobsters only die when they don't leave their shell.” (Keep yourself busy with new experiences and you'll life a long life)

NightWings

“Sleep is for the dead.” (Why waste your time sleeping when you could be productive)

“SeaWings know their fish and SandWings know their cactuses, but we NightWings know everything else.”(NightWing supremacy propaganda)

“Being nice to a deer never got one in my mouth.” (Other dragons don't matter, only your goals.)

“A prophecy always comes true.” (I told you so but more cryptic)

"You're counting the stars." (You're doing something tedious towards an unachievable goal)

RainWings

“Gray’s her favorite color.” (She's a huge bummer)

“A lemon is yellow on the outside, doesn't mean they're not sour.” (Referring to someone who is two faced or fake)

“I love honey, but I’d rather not get stung by the bees.” (I could do this, but it requires effort so I don't wanna)

“Nobody likes a rotten banana.” (Nobody likes a bummer/downer)

“Don't tie your tail in a knot” (don't get all upset)

“I have all my berries in a basket” (I have everything sorted out)

“You couldn't sneak up on a pineapple” (insult to one's camouflage skills, popular among children)

IceWings

“The seal who asks why the orca is chasing him is the first to get eaten.” (A favorite of parents telling their kids to shut up)

“Not the sharpest icicle on the roof” (kinda stupid or slow)

“Clear as polished ice” (i understand or see it very well)

“You're looking a little pink in the face” (you look sickly. IceWings can turn pink from eating too much krill; a symptom of malnutrition. This line can be applied to any illness.)

“Blue blood kills, red blood spills.” (Patriotic propaganda implying that IceWings win every fight

“The SkyWings toss their blue eyed hatchlings because they're worried they'll be as strong as an IceWing.” (More propaganda)

HiveWings

“Pretty is for the SilkWings.” (Vanity is stupid and impractical)

“If it buzzes like a bug and bites like a bug, it's a bug.” (Don't ignore the obvious)

“Clearsight works in mysterious ways.” (I don't know the answer to your question, now go away)

SilkWings

“It's not always good to know how the honey gets made.” (Don't stick your snout where it doesn't belong)

“She's got a couple of threads loose.” (Calling someone a little crazy, threads refers to weaving)

“The bee minds its flowers and the spider minds her silk, it's when they mix that bad things happen.” (Mind ya business)

LeafWings

“Flytraps only trap because the soil doesn't feed them.” (Dragons don't get angry out of nowhere)

“Looking like a leaf only hides you in the forest.” (Time and place)

“If a branch doesn't bend, it breaks.” (Be flexible)

“Even the corpse flower attracts the flies.” (Even someone who seems ugly to one dragon they can seem irresistible to another)

I used to clown on the way Secretkeeper’s realization of Moon’s powers was written as “Secretkeeper makes eye contact with her newborn baby and immediately assumes psychic powers and the funniest part about all this is that she’s right” but honestly?

Maybe Moon’s gaze is just THAT intense. You look her in the eyes and you can just TELL that something’s different about her. You might not be quite sure what it is, but I’d imagine the feeling you get is quite similar to Clearsight’s description of Whiteout’s gaze, where somehow you get the feeling she’s seen deeper into your very soul than even you have.

Then she looks away and you’re left wondering why you ever thought such a thing.

But also on the flip side, imagine BEING Moon in this situation???

Imagine having a gaze so intense that your mom clocks you as the first mind reader hatched in TWO MILLENNIA pretty much the moment you’re born.

But your mother is ALSO trying to make sure nobody ELSE clocks that so you can have a normal life.

She probably tells you to “keep your head down,” and you KNOW she means figuratively, but every time you think about the way she always says she’d at least SUSPECTED that you could read minds the moment she locked eyes with you, you’re not sure you want to take the risk of “locking eyes” with anyone else.

So you keep your head down, not even sparing anyone a glance, even as the thoughts of your peers grow ever more bitter and hateful and they tease you (some may even do more than tease) but you tell yourself it’s worth it, at least for the closest thing to acceptance you’ll ever have.

But as requested by @princeofthedark I drew Whiteout! The very first one of this task, how exciting!

Design notes:

she has little freckles everywhere because I wanted the stars on the inside of her wings to also be on her body! Cuz I thought that was a fun idea, idk :]

made the white dots that go alongside Nightwings bodies into stars for her, again to keep with star theme :3

I made the star markings on her wings randomly clumped together more. This came about because of a pencil stain on the paper actually. It turned out really cool imo!!

her right side is mostly white while her left side is mostly black :]

Some random headcanons of mine I'll throw in here because why not:

I think she's an aromantic lesbian who uses she/they :]

Darkstalker enchanted for her a necklace that would make her look more "normal" to help fit in more with the Nightwings. Her normal design I should draw sometime, it's basically her canon design but tweaked a bit-

After Darkstalker was banished, Whiteout decided to destroy the necklace and instead live as herself

After her brother was sealed away, I headcanon she was so ostracized from the Nightwings she and Thoughtful (oh yeah bros here too- I headcanon she's actually trans mtf :> but anyways-) leave the city and instead go live out in a forest in the mountains near the Sky Kingdom :]

she also has PTSD from all the horrors she witnessed with Animus magic :( this is another reason she destroys the necklace and leaves the nightwings

Eventually when her and Thoughtful have kids, they migrate back to the Nightwing colony (to keep the Animus blood line going). Thoughtful sometimes also returns to the city, but Whiteout refuses to ever return. Her kids come and visit her some days instead as a compromise. Some kids do stay with them tho!

I mentioned earlier how I think she has PTSD, but I also see them being on the autism spectrum!

And yeah :] whiteout is really cool and Ralsei has definitely got me on the hype train for it haha. Yeah!!
