World Hijab Day - #DressedNotOppressed

It is almost that time of the year again! On February 1st, it is World Hijab Day. 

What is the World Hijab Day?

Under the motto #DressedNotOppressed, women all around the world are invited to wear the hijab in support of Muslim women who are being discriminated globally because of their Muslim identity. It is an all-inclusive celebration for non-Muslims and non-hijab-wearing Muslims alike to bring a greater level of cultural awareness and understanding, as well as international solidarity.

Who started the World Hijab Day?

The event was founded by Nazma Khan in 2013. The social activist moved from Bangladesh to the US at the age of eleven. In middle school and university, Nazma found herself being the only girl wearing a hijab: 

“Growing up in the Bronx, in NYC, I experienced a great deal of discrimination due to my hijab, ‘she reflects. ‘In middle school, I was ‘Batman’ or ‘ninja’. When I entered University after 9/11, I was called Osama bin laden or terrorist. It was awful. I figured the only way to end discrimination is if we ask our fellow sisters to experience hijab themselves.”

You look at her and call her oppressed, simply because of the way she is dressed.

Undeniably you do not know that this is not just a piece of cloth that covers her.

For it is the declaration of her faith.

For it symbolizes her journey of devotion.

For it is the physical manifestation of submission to her Lord.

For it renews her commitment to her Lord.

For it is an act of obedience and righteousness.

For it is an expression of her chastity and modesty.

For it is her shield against the sins and evil temptations of this fleeting world.

For she is a jewel, and her beauty is not for everyone.

Certainly, her veil is much more than a piece of cloth wrapped around her head; something far greater than the human mind can comprehend.

The woman who adheres to the Islamic dress code, fulfilling the obligatory covering for the sake of God, will be rewarded for that in the Hereafter. Her hijab is her constant reminder to follow the prescribed religious practices and avoid what is improper. Her hijab is a symbol of her steadfastness, her dedication to her religion, and keeps her in the company of those who have good character. Her hijab is her shield, protecting her from the approach of those who have ill intent.

It was WORLD HIJAB DAY yesterday. I read so many inspiring stories about others’ hijab journey. Stories that made me realised how precious it is, Tales that give weight to the piece of clothing. Pride brimming in heart, Prayers muttered loud, Oh Allah, accept our niyyat and act of benevolence. And may this be one of the many reasons that lead us to Jannah. Grant us istiqamah and the strength to be better, day after day. inshaAllah. You. Me.
