Thinking about the whole "character grieving something they can no longer remember," has me thinking about In The White Pine Pyroscythe and his dynamic with Abolish.

This new Pyro who knows nothing about Abolish Thornvale aside from him being the sole heir to the Thornvale Estate and seems to be his father's beloved child despite how little Abolish ever appears at Morcant's charity events or never taking center stage at any work based meet and greets. Someone who remains so behind the scenes and yet is still so cherished and it makes Pyro ache with an ugly flavor of jealousy that it seems to come so easy for Abolish. That he just gets the luxury of a good life and a loving father just like that, meanwhile he is left trying to - not even impress - his father but just get him to tolerate being in the same room as him. For Zombie to not side eye him with suspicion anytime they're out in public and he smiles a little too genuinely at a male wait staff, or his eyes linger a little too long when passing a handsome man. He hates it.

But then Pyro hears not only about the rampant amount of tragedies in Abolish's life - the loss of both his birth parents in some horrible home invasion and later one of his dear and close friends he never got the chance to say goodbye to - but he sees the way Abolish interacts with the world and the people in it. How despite his hang ups and how much he tries to remain withdrawn and secluded to himself, he still looks to Pyro with an odd look of sympathy in his eyes, or the way his hackles seem to rise whenever he has to watch or listen to Zombie scold his eldest son. The bit of tenderness in how he comforted Pyro despite how much of an awful scene he was making getting upset over such a little phrase and losing his lunch into a trash bin of all things, his hand on Pyro's shoulder and a small uptick in his smile that for some reason felt so familiar to one he had seen before.

The way Abolish interacts with Izzy and Muu, Izzy's kind but protective attitude something that sometimes warded people away just as Muu's nativity and gentleness seemed to make unruly and unsavory people gravitate towards her in hopes of taking advantage. But Abolish spoke with both of them as if he were someone who had had sisters before - but that's not right, Abolish did say he was an only child - the fond way he'd smile at Izzy as she put her foot down against her father calling him a stupid man or the excitable way Muu would gush about things that made her happy. The way he took Zam's ramblings in stride and never batted an eye at Vi's need to impress him with his inventions. Abolish seemed to take it in a pace far greater than even Pyro's own as Vi's frantic rambling was met with a nod and a hum like he was pondering whatever the younger boy was rambling about, and Zam's pushiness and sometimes invasive jokes were met only with a roll of the eyes and a quick quip back. Even with the staff, watching him react to Clown and Ash with a level of odd respect, one earned by their veteran history but below him as mere staff members and yet he watched them with a soft eye and respectful stance.

It's like watching scenes of something that feels so familiar to Pyro and he has no clue why. Why these things feel like "almosts" in a life he could have lived. Why these moments made his chest ache and seize in what he could only describe as nostalgia in grief though not sure why. Why in these moments he suddenly wishes he had been a better older brother - to who? - a better friend - he had none, right? Who was he wishing so desperately he had a do over with? Why did this man bring this feeling out of him that things could have been different, better even, if only there had been the chance.

Meanwhile, Abolish speaking to a man he once loved now living anew and with no memories or attachment to him, and now interacting with a girl who is so kind and inquisitive it reminds him so deeply of Shelby and Drift, a young woman so protective and alert it's so alike to Cleo, a young man as playful and adventurous as Pearl and a young boy with a need for approval so like Avid's. Even Clown and Ash who reminded him of the Doc in so many ways, the over protectiveness, the hands that knew both harm and gentleness. With these people and the smell of moss and frigid air, Oakhurst was all around him here.

Yay, thanks.

So, obviously I've been doing a lot of yapping about this AU as of late as seen by how much I've been flooding the In The White Pine Au tag, so I figured I'll yap about some of the more nitpicky details and some of the more fun ones as well.

In my timeline that I'm - tentatively - plotting out, one of the things that I have written down is that Pyroscythe Hemlocke is the first son of Sir Zombie and his wife the unnamed Mrs. Hemlocke though his birth and their marriage were both rather unplanned. Sir Zombie and his soon to be wife slept together out of wedlock and as such, as soon as she began to realize that she was pregnant the two decided to get married in order to preserve both of their reputations as neither of them - despite how unwanted the pregnancy was - to get rid of the baby as the Hemlocke family is very religious. As such, this plays into some of the tenseness between Pyro and his father and aside from his queerness, one of the reasons Zombie is so particular and unhappy with the idea of Pyro being his company's heir.

Abolish and Morcants plan to get him invited to the estate was something that took some planning. Morcant as the Lord of Blackwyn and Zombie Hemlocke had crossed paths in some spaces prior to this AU's beginning as they're both noble men of high society and have interacted with some similar circles. When things in Emberton and more so when people begin to disappear in the Usherwood forest surrounding the Hemlocke Estate, that is when Morcant and the Organization's interests were piqued. He basically reached out to Zombie and said that he was interested in possibly partnering with Zombie and allowing him to expand parts of his business into Blackwyn, though he wanted his son Abolish to observe the family and their business practices and negotiate on his behalf prior to making any deals in order to ensure the deal was lucrative enough for him. This is what eventually allowed Abolish to get invited to the Hemlocke Estate where he was to stay as a guest - this invitation is ensured to him prior to Mysti's murder and after her death both he and Morcant became more determined to get to the bottom of this case as there are more telltale signs of unnatural presences than originally thought.

Prior to Abolish's arrival, Pyroscythe felt very nervous about the idea of messing up this potential deal so he tried to find out as much about Abolish as he could - though he didn't find much as Abolish and Morcant obviously keep his person very private. What he did find out about him made him a bit worried about the idea that Abolish was possibly just a nepotism baby and had little business experience as there's little paper trails indicating he had much if any hands in any prior Thornveil dealings before.

Abolish and Pyroscythe bond after weeks of his stay turning into pretty much a few months of time spent there as Sir Zombie becomes fond of Abolish and Morcant says there are "emergency matters the family is dealing with so it's likely beneficial to stay at Whitepine" - a lie but it helps ensure extended investigation time. During this time, one of the things that really wares down his defenses to Abolish is finding out Abolish not only lost both his parents at a young age - Abolish tells him it was a home invasion gone wrong - but also one of his closest friends Jack to an illness. He finds out Abolish never got to say goodbye to this Jack fellow or even see his grave and seeing how effected he was with Mysti and her death and grave, he feels a great deal of sympathy for Abolish and grows a bit more tender for him.
