Gonna just say thank you so much for all you do. There are some genuinely very dark topics I've been really wanting to try my hand at writing for a while but have been nervous about because I haven't experienced it myself, and it's been so encouraging to start to feel freedom to write about whatever I want. I want to remember it's about self expression, first and foremost. Wish me luck on it ig, might still post them on anon but I do want to put them out into the world.

also if it can further help, the trick is to remind yourself that people who write about murders have never been murdered before, and they can still unapologetically write about murders, however they want, whether the violence is portrayed as something tragic and grim (like what’s portrayed in drama movies), something terrifying but still fun and addictive to watch (like what’s portrayed in horror movies and psychological thriller movies), or something fun and chaotic (like what’s portrayed in slasher movies). art can be whatever and however the artist wants it to be. and no one has to have experienced xyz first in order to create/write about said topics.

it’s all about the freedom of being rightfully able to create whatever you want, however you want.

I want to share something that I hope will help some people with motivation.

At the beginning of this year, I was in a horrific writer's block and burnout. I had been for a year. I missed the conversations, the kudos emails, you name it. I considered turning to AI, I admit.

A little bit of inspiration hit me, and all I could get out was around 400 words. All of my fic's word counts had been around 2,000, with my last one being 6,000. But those had been for a fandom I was a big name in. This one wasn't.

I posted it anyway.

Next thing I know, I'm getting comments from someone, who even mentions I should write more. That they like my style. They actually ask me questions about the ship.

Next thing I know, my writer's block is gone. I feel like I can write again. I'm in a fandom that no one knows me for, but I have that one commenter, and a few familiar kudos.

So for anyone who feels like they have to use AI to get validation, or uses AI because they fear judgement, or just wants to get the thrill over with quickly:

You can start small. You can restart small. You don't have to post a 5,000 word fic. If all you can manage is 100 words, that's great.

There is an audience for your fic. You will find them, and they will find you. And then you will get the euphoria of being able to say, "That was my work. My heart and soul."

Wow. Sorry for rambling. But I wish you all an ability to take to your keyboard, and just start writing that first sentence. You all deserve it. 🫂

I see a lot of positivity posts for shitty first drafts.

But here's to the shitty second drafts! The shitty third drafts. The fourth drafts, the fifth drafts, whatever iteration of your work you're on right now.

It's okay if you're on your fifth draft and it sucks. It probably doesn't, we are our own worst critics after all, but it's also okay if it does suck. That's how we learn. That's how we grow, that's how we improve our craft.

"Write a shitty first draft!" they say. Well, I'm saying write a shitty second draft. Write a shitty third draft. A fourth draft, a fifth draft.

Write a shitty final draft.

Sometimes I will get sad because I can write, but I can't draw at all. I have a ton of ideas, but I could never draw them in a satisfying way. I have concepts for scenes in my head that would make for an incredible comic or an incredibly expressive moment. But not the skill required to make them real.

But then I think this: writing and drawing are one of a kind.

Writing is drawing with words, and drawing is writing with paint.

Writers have words, sentences, speech patterns. Painters have colours, lighting, shades. At the beginning of both, there is a thought, and at the end, a story, told in different ways. At the beginning, there's a vision, and at the end, emotions.

This puts me at peace with my limited drawing skills. We are all doing the same thing. We are all artists.
