One of the exhibits I saw at the Met was Monstrous Beauty, subheaded "A feminist revision of chinoiserie". These are only some of the pieces from the exhibition; these were done by artist Yeesookyung, using kintsugi technique to assemble broken crockery into enormous bulbous "translated" vases. I thought it would be interesting to shoot the tallest one from opposing angles, one from above and north, the other from ground level and south.

Yeesookyung

Yeesookyung, an artist who lives and works in Seoul, Korea, constantly reinvents her practice through various media such as painting, sculpture, performance, and video. She received her formal education as a painter at Seoul National University and graduated into a Korean art world that was rigidly polarized between two ideological extremes. Some preferred an international style that favored abstract art, while others practiced a populist style called Minjung art. Yeesookyung, in contrast, worked to define her own individual path while reflecting on political and cultural realities of Korea, both past and present.

"The Translated Vase series consists of sculptures reconstructed from discarded ceramic fragments. Skillful ceramic masters reproduce traditional Korean ceramics, and the vases with minor defects are destroyed to keep the rarity and value of the surviving masterpieces. I piece these destroyed pots back together in the manner of three- dimensional jigsaw puzzles, covering the cracks in gold. From the moment of destruction, I obtain a chance to intervene and fabricate new narratives with my own translation."
