Response to some guys on fb complaining about feminist issues: We need to realize that it isn't male rights vs female rights, they go hand in hand. Feminism at its core, though obviously most views on what feminism is completely will vary from person to person, but at its core, it's about equality. Not favoring a female victim over a male victim, not girl power over men. It's about taking the playing field and leveling it and giving everyone a chance at life that isn't determined by the sex you are born as or choose to be. I could see where some men may see feminism as something that advocates women over men or gives women more credibility as victims, I could see how that could even come off as threatening to an illusion of current equality, or as unnecessarily extreme and uncalled for. That makes sense in some cases. Honestly though, I can't claim to fully understand the anti-feminist side of an argument. All that I have experienced has been experienced as a girl who got to grow up with the subtle yet life shaping expectations of an unequal society where I faced struggle, albeit minor manageable things since I've been privileged to stay in relatively progressive areas, that are a direct result of sexism. But I've seen worse, not just in the news but in person in friends and family, cases where friends were raped and the rapist got away (an unfortunately common story for men and women), cases where depending on location rape of women is a justifiable fact of life like natural disaster and rape of men is mistakenly unheard of, cases where people who worked hard were overlooked or disrespected and rejected for being female. A few times, major cases where I was treated as less because of my gender and I knew it was because of my gender (and worst of all the entire incident was disregarded because you can't just call out sexism where it isn't understood or recognized, where it's a myth that went extinct sometime in the 70's). Worst of all I know that it'll be worse as time goes on, when I go to college (where the major college search criteria in my parent's eyes and mine isn't just average acceptance GPA but also the number of reported sexual assault cases and the way these cases are handled), when I enter the job market where of course women are commonly paid less, promoted less, and given less opportunity in certain career paths than men and often don't even know it, when I have to get my own health insurance where my medical needs may not be covered because a woman's body is simply seen by many lawmakers as made for making kids and where those same lawmakers feel that it's not necessary to know much about women's bodies before they get to make laws controlling what women can and can't do medically (not just talking about birth control and abortion, believe it or not), when I have kids or get married and my role in my family is defined by those who do not know my family and assumptions are made about me by those who don't understand me. I know that the world is more progressive now and that these instances needn't apply to every case, but there is an extraordinarily high probability that they will. Just remember that the world we live in isn't equal and that equality isn't black and white. Remember that when you respond to a feminist's comments, especially a female feminist, you are speaking to an experience you don't know or will ever have to know, you are speaking to the anxiety that all women get to face (some more than others) and to a life that is more complicated than you know. Remember that these things matter to us for a reason and that we aren't shouting because we want to. And our experiences, anxieties, and complicated lives dot devalue yours or make yours any less complicated with their own unique set of complications. And most of all remember that both men and women suffer from the gender roles and expectations of an unequal society whether they see it or not. Bonus: To a feminist friend, about people who choose to devalue the views of feminists or to mock feminism as a whole because of their particular experiences with or limited view "some don't see this as something important but rather as something to troll about or reject as unnecessarily overblown. Idk but arguing back isn't really going to make the point you want to make or help anyone who doesn't already to see that a bigger issue like this isn't something to mess around about? Or that it's personally disrespectful/often even deeply offensive to those passionate or personally connected to this to belittle the overall purpose of the issue by pointing out inconsequential flaws or by invalidating the entire issue/opinion over a single person's views or perspective on it? Like you can't hope to change someone's perspective or respect for something if they have no personal experience with it or sentiment for it... Just a warning about picking battles, it's sometimes stuff like this unfortunately that creates the whole devaluing/misreading of feminism/stereotype of the "feminazi" thing. I get that it's disrespectful and can feel deeply inconsiderate when people devalue important things like this, it's just that no amount of convincing using fact or sentiment or passion can change someone else's mind if they don't want to change it themselves or already have a preset view of everything you are going to say before you get to say it... and often people who feel strongly about issues like equality and feminism etc. (I.e. me) want to keep pushing on every single argument because it matters and affects us and the people we care about, and basically it defines the way we experience things. But that pushing can be counterproductive if you get what I mean, sorry this probable doesn't make sense. Idk, just don't take stuff like this too hard, it's the big picture that matters most and the places where people actually can compromise to make society better for everyone, right? I'm not saying to be any less passionate or not to speak up or to silence your opinions at all. Just, as he saying goes, don't waste your time shouting in deaf ears."
