I've discussed yuri/rule63/fem (whatever you want to call it) lestappen with my friend multiple times and there are a few conclusions we came to.
First I think it's important to point out that all fics where drivers are written as women deal with the misoginy/experience women have in motorsports which is a topic i find really important to talk about. As a woman studying in a STEM field which is closely related to motorsports, this topic hits very close to home for me in multiple aspects.
Lestappen put in this AU makes me want to chew on something because I think they would both perform femininity for the male gaze in their own very different ways.
Max as a man and how he presents himself through how he dresses can't be described by anything else but basic. He definitely does not give a single fuck about fashion and just dresses how a normal man would dress, with minimal self expression through clothes. To me this is what men do when they just want to be perceived as a man and i really hope you get what i'm trying to say here. Like this is how 80% of men who have no inclination towards fashion or no particular prefrences towards fashion dress, while still coming off as "manly".
Going off of this thing that I believe about Max (reminder that idk him personally and this is just an opinion) I believe that woman Max would do the same thing, except with women the societal expectations are ten times worse. I can see woman Max wearing those cambered t-shirts that hug your waist (i'm not talking about crop tops or cute tops here, i'm talking about those tshirts "for women") just because those are the shirts in the women's section. She would not think it is a choice to wear any type of shirt, she would choose to wear that type of tshirt because it's "made for women" and thinks that is what women should wear normally. (can you tell i have trauma related to this)
In a way, I believe woman Max would be very aware and comfortable with her bisexuality (don't crucify me but this is just lowkey Max Verstappen irl anyways), but still dressing in a way that is expected of her while it is obvious that she doesn't care about fashion. I think the nuance here is given by not the fact that she doesn't care but that she has never felt the confidence to go further than that in fear of how she would be perceived. I think it's safe to assume that the growing up of it all could come to play into this, where she would just be put in the role of "girl" when it comes to how she presents and not looking beyond that in any way.
The way i can describe how i see woman Max is: you're a casual person but you are going to a wedding as a bridesmaid and getting your makeup done until you are glammed up beyond recognition. then you're put in a dress and you look in a mirror and you can't recognise yourself at all but you think this is just how it's supposed to be.
Now, moving on to Charles. Real life Charles Leclerc is 100% aware of what having an image means and how to portray himself in a modern way i guess? His PR team is definitely excellent at whay they do. Charles' image is, to put it bluntly, that he is the main character of F1. He doesn't really display a lot of personality in how he presents himself imo and i feel like the most things about his personality come from the unfiltered moments he has on occasion, which is where my perception of him comes from that he puts on this persona. Which is normal for a public figure, probably 90% of what we "get to see" about these people is also manufactured by the F1 media machine.
Woman Charles is the case of what i think happens to a lot of women generally. I think she would geniuenly enjoy presenting herself in a feminine way, she would be very on trend with current fashion trends, funnily enough I would see her dressing like Alexandra dresses (considering they are married it would make sense they have the same taste). This is great for her except i see it getting twisted into what inevitably happens when women present as put together and feminine: they get minimised into this role of pretty woman and that's about it. I think it's very conflicting for Charles because she would not be able to be herself without other people putting her down about it (average woman experience sadly) and she would try to start overcompensating in order for people to take her seriously.
The most real woman Charles to me is not tomboy Charles, but real, unfiltered Charles who doesn't bother to do her hair for race day because what's the point if it will get ruined anyway but embodies full glam when she attends events. She's still feminine but she has this deep rooted fear of not getting taken seriously, which leads to a confusing mess of feelings, especially when put into contrast with Max who doesn't have this expectation put on her because she's not the "pretty" one, but she still embodies enough of the concept of "woman" that people don't question her femininity.
If Charles chose to dress comfortable for a race weekend, her femininity and style would be immediatley scrutinized and put under a question mark. This crafted imagine would be very difficult to overcome for her, i imagine. And this ties in with the fact that she probably has feelings for Max but she hasn't even considered this, as it doesn't fit into this image she's trying to create and in the constant struggle of performing femininity, she has lost pieces of her true self along the way.
You can see that i have a very strong opinion on woman Lestappen and this is how i would see them exist in an AU where they are both women. I've seen many variations on butch/femme dynamics on them, but in my vision they are a femme/femme couple which both struggle with the concept of femininity but in two very different ways. i think it has to do with their awareness of it and also the way they would perceive their queerness.
I have some headcanons about Fem!Max Vertappen and Fem!Charles Leclerc , and about the various relationship of them with other people (mostly other drivers) But mainly about sapphic!Lestappen and I need to share:
In my head, Fem!Lestappen's names are Maxine Emilia Verstappen and Charlotte Marie Hervina Pascale Leclerc. Maxine prefers to be called Max, and Charlotte's family and old friends call her Lottie. However, Max has called her Charlie since their karting days, and the nickname stuck, so Charlotte is known as Charlie in the motorsport world. Max also has the nicknames Maxy and Maxie from some friends and fans.
Somehow, they both still managed to secure their seats at the same time as in the real world. Max is the youngest driver ever. Charlie got her Haas seat in 2018 and became the youngest Ferrari driver and the first female driver on the team in 2019. They would definitely be scrutinized more for being women in a male-oriented world. Max would be labeled a "crazy b*tch" by the worst F1 fans, and Charlie would be placed on a pedestal, where she would need to project a saintly, pure image, since they think she's their idol, the predestined one.
Some fans and the media would put them in the same box categorized as "female drivers" and want them to be best friends and do everything together or would pit them against each other as if they needed to be rivals just because they're both women. So, Maxie and Charlie's relationship wasn't always easy.
Charlie would be jealous of how Maxie does whatever she wants, puts people in their place, expresses her dissatisfaction, and doesn't try too hard with her appearance, while Charlie always needs to look her best. Charlie would also be jealous of how many records Maxie has in her career.
Maxy would be jealous of Charlie because she had a good childhood and her family was always close. How the brunette seems beautiful even without trying too hard, while some fans call Max ugly or fat. Many saying her only good selling point is her breasts, which are bigger than most women's. Max would also be jealous of Charlie's talent in other areas of her life, such as music and her branding, while Maxy's seems only having talent to race. Initially, they would definitely compare themselves to each other since fans and the media treated them differently even though they were put in the same box of "the only female drivers on the grid."
About romance Maxy would be more open to relationships or one-time things than Charlie, who needs to seem like her fans idol which never makes mistakes.
They would be both bisexual in their private lives.
But Charlie doesn't show her sexuality in public and has only officially dated men. In private, however, she has had girlfriends, aka Charles's real life girlfriends. She would show in the paddock with them but would be calling them only friends. The only sapphic relationship she has almost made public was when she almost asked Alexandra to marry her. However the younger woman saw that Charlie was in love with Maxy, so Alexandra broke up with her. But they are still friends, as Alexandra was the one that made Charlie realize her feelings for the Dutch woman.
Maxie has a thing for older people. While she never talked much about her sexuality, she never really labeled herself as straight. The public only thought this because she was mostly seen with men. Out of the public eye, however, she dated girls, too. This is an open secret in the paddock. She had flings with both Nelsinho and Kelly Piquet at different points in her life. She was in a relationship with one of them for several years. I don't know which sibling she was with, but somehow, L*** Verstappen Piquet was born. If it was with Nelsinho, he would be the father. If it was with Kelly, the two women would be the parents of the child, perhaps with Nelsinho being the donor. Either way, the child would still exist in this world. However, their relationship would deteriorate over time, and problems would arise with the Piquets as individuals and as a family. Also, people would definitely call them out for grooming Maxie, and that would be just one of their problems.
As for the relationship with other drivers:

- Jules was still her godfather and mentor. However, since Charlie is a woman, some people try to paint their relationship in a negative light, as if there were something more to it. She is furious about these things.
- Charlie and Pierre tried to date as teenagers, but it didn't work out, so they're only best friends nowadays.
- The karting era boys are her friends, just not as close.
- Somehow, Lando became jealous of her closeness with Max, who Lando fancies. So, Charlie and Lando don't really get along anymore. They just try not to show this animosity in public.
- Charlie had a crush on Sebastian, but it faded when they became teammates.
- Some people think that she and Oscar could become a couple if only he didn't already have a girlfriend. In this world, it would be an straight relationship, and fans would openly ship them together.
- Charlie and Carlos are totally a couple when Carlos is at Ferrari. They're kind of polycute with her and Carlos, her and Alexandra, Alexandra and Rebecca, and Carlos and Rebecca happening at the same time. They just don't openly talk about their relationships with many people. Carlos and Charlie would also be shipped by the fans

- Maxy had a crush on Daniel since she was a young teenager, ever since she met him at a karting event, where the Red Bull driver had gone as a representative. However, they only started dating when she was already at Red Bull. It started as just a crush, but somehow they got together between late 2016 and early 2018, when their relationship ended badly, with Daniel going to Renault because he knew Red Bull would prioritise their golden girl. The problem was that he never spoke to her first about joining another team; she found out from others. They had a strained relationship for some time, but somehow they survived, and nowadays they're friends again. They also talked about their past relationship and how Daniel had almost proposed to her before things went badly. They're still friends, even though she still has some regrets about what could have been.
- Maxy has had a crush on Checo since she met him when she joined F1, but as they're not close, it only happened when they were both at Red Bull. Max obviously had a crush on him, and at some point they got together, just not openly, since they were both seeing other people. It all ended badly when Checo lost his Red Bull seat.
- Carlos and Max had a rivalry kinda turned a thing when they were at Toro Rosso, but it never went much further than that and they're still on good terms.
- Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso would mostly be seen as family, even though Maxy thinks they're objectively kind of hot.
- Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton were also attractive to her, but she wouldn't go there (Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen too).
- The Karting Boys are kind of jealous of how she got her chances in F1 early than they, so their relationship with her varies. But two people stand out: George and Lando. They both had a crush on her since their karting days.
- George has a kind of frenemy/crushing relationship with her.
- And Lando since he's the youngest in the group he became attached to her because she treated him like any other guy, even when he was looked down because of his short, childlike appearance. Since then, he has tried to make her see him more than a friend, but he has become so focused on this that he has lost sight of his goals. Over time, his resentment of her talent and jealousy of her closeness to others caused him to say some hurtful things about her and their friendship. However, Max hopes that they will be more friendly again someday.

- She seems to think of Horner as a parental figure. However, when the harassment scandal broke, many people began to ask her if he had made a move on her or made her uncomfortable. She says no, but she knows he would sometimes say something iffy. In the end, though, she would talk herself out of thinking it was abnormal for a boss/parental figure to say such things.
- Helmult Marko for her is like a father, he was the one that put a redbull contract on her desk. So she tries to think much about the things he says , but sometimes she wants to him to shut up just a little
-Maxie likes and has confidence in Franz Todd and Laurent Mikies. They always try to look after Maxie's wellbeing without putting pressure on her. Maxie thinks Laurent is also attractive, but she doesn't want to do anything about it; she just appreciates him.
- Maxy always thought GP as manly and hot. But since he's her engineer she tries not to make a move even if she does feel the heated chemistry they have.
- Somehow Maxy would still be friends with Martin Garrix/Martjin Garritsen and Rico Verhoeven. Maybe had a crush on them? Maybe they kissed , maybe more
So yeah basically Maxy has chemistry with almost everyone that got to know her real self. Not just the Mad Max persona. But because of the lack of love in her childhood , she tries to find some affection from anyone that wants to get more close. She has a bit of difficulty in not falling for people that treat her well. Even if only a little bit.
Charlie would be always being put in the list of most beautiful woman, with many people wanting to be with her but without really wanting to know her in real life , out of spotlight. So she choices really well people that will be with her be a real relationship or for PR
As for Lestappen Maxy and Charles have a in and off relationship between rivalry, crush, and sometimes having a fling. And even a tentative friendship. But times flow, they went with their lifes, been with other peoples. Life happened. Cut to 2025 and they ended the relationship they had with other people. And so growing closer over time, to the point the fans could began to see how close they are being. And so little things would began to happen. A like on a photo on midia social, a photo shared of them on race day. They sharing that they do live in the same building, Maxy having her promotional photos for Tag Heuer taken by Charlie's team. They secretly got together in 2026, and over time they moved in together with their pets, Leo, Nino, Donut, Sassy and Jimmy, as well as Maxie's children. It would be difficult for her to have custody of L*** given their lifes as racers, but if the child were from a relationship with Nelsinho, Max would have custody as the mother. However, if the child were to have Kelly and Maxie as parents, I could see Maxie getting custody if Kelly were to expose the baby unnecessarily and lead a life of many traveling. Also it seems that the Piquets live only of appearances, since I read somewhere that they're financially broke. So, yeah, Maxy can provide a better life for the child. So she should have custody. Maybe Charlie's mother could help with babysitting? Since she does also live in Monaco
