This guy has me stumped. As far as I can tell, he most closely resembles a 9-Dotted Ground Spider, except some of his 'dots' are more like dashes (not to mention the third pair of dots being pink??). Regardless he looks fantastic, and I was somehow lucky enough to get a pic of this fast-moving species (much like the N. coloripes I posted earlier, although this guy is a different genus).
9-Dotted Ground Spider(?), male (Habronestes hunti).
Ant spiders are members of the family Zodariidae. They are small to medium-sized eight-eyed spiders found in all tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Africa, Madagascar, Australia-New Guinea, New Zealand, Arabia and the Indian subcontinent.............🕷️🐜🕷️🐜 Shot on #realme3 @realmeindia . #3423 - Habronestes sp.
A genus endemic to Australia, with about 50 described species. They mostly prey on ants, and some are quite good mimics of their prey.
It was first described by German arachnologist and entomologist Ludwig Carl Christian Koch (1825 – 1908) in 1872. Koch is generally considered one of the most influential arachnologists of the 19th Century, but is sometimes confused with his dad, Carl Ludwig Koch (1778 –1857)- also an entomologist and arachnologist. In 2003 the genus was revised by Barbara Baehr, another German arachnologist and entomologist.
One species has been named after a research sponsor - H. boq, after the Bank of Queensland.
