Only two days late, here is a my contribution to ectober month/week 28: insect/rot!

Some backstory under the cut, a little vector-borne horticultural apocalypse...

These were the insects Sam didn’t see. She thought the threat was exterminated by that heavy scent, trapping every little flying thing in its sinking sickly sweet miasma. But they flew up to where she floated near the ceiling, burrowing into that jacket she wears around her waist. They nested, infested the green plaid with their spectral intelligence and rode it to warm refuge.

Her greenhouse was a perfect home. If Sam had been a normal gardener, they might have languished in a bed of benign begonias. But her tastes ran toward the strange, toward plants with a certain macabre air. And genus saracenia, the carnivorous pitcher plant, served as a remarkably hospitable host. Their sweet nectar would normally draw insects such as these to their deaths, but the dead can’t be killed again. And these insects could themselves do more than kill. They could instead transform.

What alluring concoction would this new breed use to draw in their new, much larger prey?
