I've been reading about the Travis Scott concert. People saying that he wasn't responsible should re-evaluate - I've performed in dark auditoriums where you can't see the audience before, and this was NOT one of them. There are SO MANY videos of celebrities stopping concerts just for ONE person who has passed out - I'm sure it would not be hard to find a compilation of them. Travis Scott didn't do ANYTHING. He's the guy in front of everybody with a mic, he could easily have told audience members to calm down and make way for the ambulance. As the performer, he had every opportunity to STOP EVERYTHING. His apology video also sucks... it gives me real "white guy apologizing for saying the n word" vibes.
From what I'm seeing, it looks like they didn't hire enough security guards, didn't have any escape plans, and hired a OUTRAGEOUSLY incompetent medical team - apparently a concert-goer was a medical professional who watched & had to correct medics who couldn't perform CPR, loaded a woman onto a carrier incorrectly and and dropped her onto her face. It SOUNDS like people who snuck in without buying tickets had little problem doing so, causing crowd overflow on top of Scott's audience rage hype.
The concert continued for 37 minutes after the crew had confirmed to emergency services that it would be stopped. Everybody in the crew uses headsets to communicate. This could have been stopped immediately.
I'm not reblogging anything from this incident (it's obviously horrible), but if you don't know about it you need to at least know it happened. I'm liking posts of accounts & comments of the situation, if you want to see a collection of them, I guess. But you can always just look at Tumblr's Travis Scott tag.
It's important that people do NOT blame audience members for this, with the exception of those who purposely obstructed emergency vehicles. The blame falls SOLELY on Travis Scott and his team.
Travis Scott. Astroworld. I hope cancel culture comes and claims you all. Truly and utterly disgusting behaviour by all involved.
I’ve watched Chester Bennington and Green Day stop shows to prioritise safety and they are a hell of a lot louder so to the TS stans: the “It’s too noisy” argument is invalid. I’ve seen Dave Grohl and Avenged Sevenfold stop shows and curse dudebros for being idiots because you know, they have the gift of vision. When you’re that high up on the stage, you can definitely see and even if you can’t make out the details, perhaps the red and blue lights of the ambulance parked in the crowd may have alerted you to the fact that something is wrong. Damm.
Also, to that camerman who ignored those TWO kids screaming, “There’s someone dead! Help us!” Well. I just am lost for words. I was speechless seeing that video. That would be absolutely traumatising for them and fuck the adults who refused to help.
I feel so devastated for the young kids and adults who died at what should have been a fun concert for them. The entire Astroworld team should face scrutiny and repercussions. They need those sectioned barriers so even if there’s a surge, it’s a controlled amount and not the whole damm crowd all at once.
What happened at Astroworld 2021 is absolutely devastating and horrifying.
Everyone who had the responsibility to prevent something like this from happening (Travis Scott, his team, people in charge of festival management) should be facing repercussions as well as covering all the expenses of all injuries and fatalities.
There is a lot of current discussion about humanity being terrible. I understand this sentiment. My mind falls into these thoughts too. I think it's almost impossible for many of us not to feel this way.
But I hope that we are also able to reflect on how this tragedy is one of the many horrible outcomes of the culmination of the existing systems held down by the harmful cultures that perpetuate them.
The disregard of people in power towards the very people that put money in their pockets
The capitalistic prioritization and desensitization from the cameramen to the people talking about getting their money's worth
The idolization of capital power coming from the people who still defend Travis Scott's fucked up actions
All this and more contributes to the lack of empathy we see in something like this.
I want to commend the people that tried to help those who were getting hurt and the ones who tried to stop the concert altogether. It's because of people like them that I don't think that humans are terrible, but I do think that the systems in place have stripped many of their humanity.
My heart goes to the people recovering from their injuries and traumas, and the grieving loved ones involved.
