Virgil looked around the school building, paying attention as Roman pointed out the different classrooms. There were so many classes in one hall, it made Virgil dizzy. They made it to the cafeteria before the bell rang, signaling everyone to get to class. “I’ll see you later, Virgil,” Roman said, waving before heading to his class. Virgil waved back and turned, bumping into someone. Today was not his lucky day. Both of them looked up at each other, and everything stopped.
Virgil took in the features of this…this… He didn’t know what to call him, for all the words to describe the boy were not enough.
The boy wore a black polo that showed off his wonderfully toned arms and shoulders, a light blue necktie, and navy blue skinny jeans that showed off his legs for days.
The tardy bell rang, and Virgil snapped out of his daze. The boy checked his watch and dashed off to class, not even staying long enough to speak. Virgil shrugged and power walked to his class, making it to a seat in the back before his teacher came in. “Good morning, class. I’m Mr. Mitchell, your history teacher. It is great to see everybody back at school, and I hear I have a new student,” the teacher said, reaching for his glasses and clipboard. “Uh, Mr. Virgil Sanders, would you care to tell us a little about yourself?” Every single student in the classroom turned to him, expecting an answer. Virgil looked around, shrinking slightly into his hoodie. His mind was racing too much, and he knew he’d probably be deemed disrespectful.
Come on, you idiot. Answer them!
They’ll think you’re stupid if you don’t!
Virgil’s breathing became sporadic, and his eyes became cloudy. The room was getting smaller, and the people watching him seemed to become impatient. Before he could completely panic, a voice brought him back. “Mr. Mitchell, I think it’d be better if he got to know everyone for a few weeks. He did just get here last night.” Virgil turned in the direction of the voice, and it felt like earlier all over again. The same boy he’d collided with was sticking up for him, helping him out. Virgil didn’t know what to say, and even if he did, his mouth wouldn’t open. The bell rang, ending class quicker than Virgil would’ve hoped. He wanted to spend a little more time with the boy, get to know him a little better.

Logan Ackroyd was a great student. Fifteen years old, straight A student, valedictorian, 7.0 GPA, and one of the most isolated students in school. He spent his lunch break in the courtyard studying for tests that were years away, he made the highest grades in the school’s entire history, he was a mathlete, and he never talked to anyone. He didn’t have time to, anyway; he never dared to indulge in trifling activities.
Though Logan didn’t really fool with emotions, he felt something that morning when he bumped into the new kid. He decided to brush it off as shock, a mere scare. Besides, who wouldn’t be scared if someone bumped into them? But, Logan wasn’t scared of bumping into anyone before. He jumped in pure fright when someone put their hands on his shoulders.
“Logan!!” a voice cried. Logan turned to his right, looking into the light cocoa eyes of Patton Orion, the nicest person in the school. Knowing he would have to listen to Patton’s constant talking, Logan kept quiet as his bubbly friend spoke, his mind racing as he thought about the boy he’d run into that day.
Maybe, just maybe, they’d cross paths…
