Emoji Character Design Challenge part 1

Batman Dark Patterns is very good.
This might be a hot take but Batman is cooler when they write him as potentially having some mysticism instead of diet emo Tony Stark.
To be fair I don't want anyone to canonize that Bruce Wayne has magical powers, I love when they're like "well but it's just hysteria" "I was drugged" "a hallucination from the pain" or whatever. It needs to be vague and up in the air, it needs to be superstition. I think Dan Watter built this perfectly with the Pareidolia arc, by making Bruce ponder if the things that happen are just coincidences that we attribute patterns to or if they are really there and then have Bruce do a gesture that makes it look like he stopped the fire just to then say we might be reading too much into it, who knows. It's very well crafted and the art by Hayden Sherman is INSANE honestly.
I did have some problems with it tho but honestly those are more just personal preferences and nerd tantrum.
The first arc was not that interesting to me personally and Wound Man was not very convincing to me. Bruce keeps saying any hit on him will kill him but then he puts the guy to sleep and lets him fall to the ground? And he is laid down later and the pressure never does anything to the nails? Idk, it felt overdone.
I loved the scarface arc.
the third arc, Pareidolia, introduces some key concepts to the story that I enjoyed but it really bothered me in some aspects. Bruce being shot is fine but being tied up by an old man and two kids, just to have the kid die? It's in bad taste and makes him look kinda stupid. Not that he needs to be the most powerful man ever but it's not very convincing to me, at least not the way it happened. Also Bruce saw a man eat a rat said "okay" and went away and idk, I miss when he would just give jobs to criminals out of the blue and give people money or tips to get help. This was a great opportunity for him to come back later and give the guy some good food and a job or something, I feel like the whole thing with him going to a poor neighborhood and making everything worse is not bad per se but if it's not addressed in terms of class dynamics it just makes Batman look like those old facebook posts of like "if Batman REALLY wanted to help Gotham he would pay for schools" and like, yeah, that's what he does, all the time, but Dark Patterns doesn't help this point at all (and it's not it's job or it's point but it does frustrate me as a loser)
The end is too cool for me to hate but the villain is very weak to me. I already did not care for the suspicious doctor thing and then the journalist was just too obvious. It's a shame cause I do feel like the reimagining of the Ventriloquist was good and so did the old man in the third arc, but the last villain talks too much and never convinces me of why he's compelling. It's funny, but Garfield Lynns barely did anything and had more sauce the whole time, I almost wish the last arc was about him and his relation to fire instead... Even then, the last arc fed me well with Batman mysticism, I love when Bruce sees shit, be it ghosts or scenes of Gotham's past and the end gave me chills so I'm very satisfied, cause I feel like we lost a lot of Dennis O'neil vision of Batman as cryptid, the urban legend, the myth (obviously because of the nolanverse's irreparable damage to Batman) but I loved when back in the day the common folk of Gotham would debate if Batman existed and if so if he was a demon or a vampire or whatever. The superstition part of Batman is what fuels the fear part of Batman (Which is why I find stupid when people say like "we should see the actors eyes so we can relate to him, no white lenses!" NO! We shouldn't see his eyes, he built this whole thing EXACTLY so you don't think he's human. Humans die, criminals should not believe they can kill the Batman).
Honestly it's making me really happy to see Dan Watters bring back the urban fantasy aspects of Batman to both him and Nightwing and I also loved it in Ram V's Gotham Nocturne, the whole Barbatos thing is one of my favorite things in Batman mythos (well, the original one at least, by Peter Milligan, not the dark multiverse thing).
I've rambled enough:
Batman Dark Patterns gets an 8.5/10 from me. Great Batman mysticism, great art but Could be woker and could have had a Robin.
since when are you in the DC comics fandom?
I don't know how to answer that exactly š¤
I don't even consider myself in the DC Comics fandom specifically, the only things I've read religiously was batfamily stuff (including their teams like Birds of Prey, Teen Titans, Young Justice, Outsiders, etc).
That happen because when I was a kid I was OBSESSED with the Teen Titans cartoon Robin because he turned into Nightwing and Nightwing to me was the coolest guy ever.
In my teens I got really into superheroes in general, I've read a bunch of early Marvel comics when I was 19 and would follow a lot of stuff online and then eventually I thought about reading every Teen Titans stuff around 2020.
I started with the 60s fab five ones and from that I thought "well, maybe I'll read the Robin comics from this time" which usually came in a Batman book as a back up, so I started reading the Batman books and I loved it and from that on I just... Read everything with a bat character in it (except for Justice League which I'll do eventually but not yet).
So yeah, I'm now obsessed with Batman and his kids and his kids' silly friends lol
I've now read most of every run that includes a bat character starting from the silver/bronze age forward. I've actually just hit the monthly releases last month. To be fair I've skipped some issues or dropped some runs when I felt the development was out of character or just not really happening. I feel like modern comics are more interested in maintaining the IP running than they care about actually developing the characters and giving them new stuff. Things like Robin growing into Nightwing, Jason Todd's death, Roy Harper giving birth to Lian Harper and losing an arm, Bruce being revealed to have a son and all of that with big events that encompassed all the batfamily characters like Contagion, Knightfall etc... This doesn't happen anymore. Detective Comics and Batman are now almost independent books and the Batgirl and Nightwing books won't even touch on the events of either of them, etc. Idk... I'm just rambling at this point.
TL;DR: I've liked superheroes since I'm a kid and got obsessed with Batman in my early 20s.
I've redrawn Batman's first appearance
Look it's the invisibles
Ah, Trans Representation:
Jumpscare! That hot chick had a cock! This incident is about how everyone except her feels about it.
This is Fern, everyone exclusively refers to them with they/them pronouns, it will never be elaborated upon narratively, they are a static character outside the main cast
Tee hee, I'm an anime girl who's actually a BOY. Have I mentioned I'm a boy today?
Critically acclaimed subplot where a trans man self actualises and then does nothing else for the entire rest of the series. Everyone has long serious talks about his identity in vague terms that are perfectly useless for anyone to reflect on themselves or relate to him in any way whatsoever.
Critically acclaimed story about the tragedy of a 40-year-old trans woman who's so, so brave. Just so incredibly brave. The cis man playing her sacrificed so much of his dignity for this role where he put on a wig and said "respect my choice to live my truth".
Today on Copaganda we ask the important question: Is the murdered sex worker in the wrong sometimes? It's complicated, because penis.
This entire story is a metaphor for transness but somehow not a single trans woman had creative input on it, so we're sitting here awkwardly trying to find a way to bring up how That scene sort of undermined the message of tolerance and inclusion. Not one character has literally transed their gender
Hi, yeah, all of those suck, but if I may, I am a non-binary artist and my whole thing right now is that I'm also a comic writer/artist heavily based on shonen manga but with actual queer people and other minorities in it.
The villains are religious cops.
I wanna put all kinds of trans people here, I am married to a trans man and if you'd like to support and read more queer inclusive stories, please give a chance to other indie artists āŗļø
Read here: linktr.ee/marsraku
I wish I could say you'd read it and get a lot of queer rep right now, but I'm still at the beginning.
The current chapters are about a trans person though, even if that's still not clear in the text. It's about the kid finding this out about them too.
Things I still want to do:
- Doomed/toxic yuri
- old man yaoi/old woman yuri
- t4t yaoi
- Trans people debating their feelings on passing or not
- Trans elders and kids
- non binary characters
- queer drama but also queer celebration
- non-monogamy sometimes
- the queer people are not sanitized to appeal to cishets, they have sex and are morally complex
- other minorities, this story is also about Neuro diversity in a way.
So idk, if all that seems like your kinda stuff, please give me a try!

less fanfiction is inherently bad and therefore shameful to joke about dante or shakespeare or any number of classic works being fanfiction due to their referential and intertextual nature and more damn isnt it crazy derivative and intertextual works have been like one of the major pillars of storytelling for millennia and now suddenly this is like illegal to do with modern works without a studio executive or lawyers or formal contracts and money exchanging hands and one of the few legally ignored ways to still do that is exclusively available to people writing mostly anonymously in specific communities for amateurs with highly specific community interests and norms and storytelling desires who can receive no money or great fame from this endeavor lest the lawyers come after you because this is also still not really legal anyways its genuinely fucked up you suddenly cant just write books about a bunch of characters created by other people less than 100 years ago and reinterpret and reengage with them in exciting new ways
Yep! Also like, most of modern franchises of movies and comics and series are basically "legal" fanfiction... Except for the fact that lots of times they are not written by fans. They are not passion projects of people who have things to say about pieces of media, they are executives deciding which direction a character they did not create and do not care about beyond the money they make is allowed to go.
The MCU is basically a bunch of guys that do not read comics coming up with colorful military propaganda using the work of people they do not care about while the people that actually care about them are not allowed to do something with them and the people that created those characters are struggling or forgotten.
Not only that, even comics that are considered "canon" will sometimes be written by people that understand the character less than BlackCanaryFan123 on Tumblr and will twist the character into a lesser version just to keep IP running. This is not to say that anyone is entitled to anything, but we need to realize that the power companies hold over characters and stories is not sacred (as the word canon suggests) and is not a model that always existed. Most of what we now study as Arthurian mythos for example is a lot of different authors from different countries and cultures coming up with different stories and studying the themes and characters of each other.
Culture and art is from the people for the people and the only reason artists have to hold on to the idea of intellectual property is because we need to survive capitalism and keep stories and art going without starving. Stories and art cannot be owned. I talk from the perspective of comics because it's what I've been into, but this is true for everything.
