Pretty Little Lies // Alan & Maxine // V8 w2 Friday Morning
“Of course,” Maxine replied, standing and gathering her things, tossing the trash from her bagel in the bin before following behind Shelby. Every alarm bell in her head was telling her not to follow, but there was one opportunistic voice in the back of her mind telling her not to pass up this chance.
Maxine sighed, “I got in touch with you because I want the job, but we need to talk terms.” She said. He already admitted he wanted her to take the job, and he had gotten in touch with her the week before on the same subject. In her mind, it was safe to say that unless she outright denied the job or asked something outrageous, she had it.
“And I want to open up with that when Petrelli weathers this storm its got goin’ on, partially by your hands, mind you, I want to go back.” She stated. Yes, there’d been a murder or two on campus. Yes, there were currently riots happening, but she was sure that with some negotiations that things would calm. “That is non-negotiable.”
Once they were in the car it was clear that Alan’s driving style was the style of a person that enjoyed living dangerously every now and then. Perhaps it was all the meetings and the talks he had to give, but the speed demon in him had never quite been outgrown. He chuckled at her answer, feeling that he was certainly drawing his little fish in with the bait he’d set. “Oh I know you want the job,” He nodded, “You wouldn’t have gotten in here unless you did.” He knew how all these little people were, especially her type. He’d done his homework.
“The good news---Is I want you to want the job.” He flashed her a grin, “Or more specifically, I’ve got a good mind to give it to you. You seem a capable young woman. Smart too. I can use that, and you can too. In fact I encourage you to.” He added, glancing at her before taking a turn. “I like Illinois.” He mused, “Lots of little county roads and little towns. These big places, New York. Their taste gets a little old after awhile. All the smog maybe.”
He allowed her to name her terms before speaking his own part. “I have no quarrel with the school, so why not?” He laughed at her accusation though, “Well you’re certainly entitled to your opinion, even if it is slightly misinformed.” He winked at her, taking another turn. “The problems Petrelli school has run into were bound to arise sooner or later. They simply aren’t equipped to deal with the problem. One school can only do so much. I’m honestly not trying to destroy a single school,” He chuckled, “Waste of my office.” He pursed his lips, as if thinking hard. “But you have me interested. Voice of the people so to speak. Do you think I’m taking a personal vendetta against the school? If so why?” He gestured vaguely, “Go ahead. Maybe I can give you a bit more of a truthful picture than the press.”

Pretty Little Lies // Alan & Maxine // V8 w2 Friday Morning
“Yeeeaah, that’s probably going to come back and bite me…” He mused after a moment, as if agreeing on the point that it wasn’t good for his tires at least. He glanced back at her with renewed interest when she mentioned the bagels, the idea sounding more enticing than it had before. “What am I waiting around here for then?” He questioned aloud, turning the engine off and stepping out of the car. “Lead me to this oasis?” He grinned.
It was almost cliche in a way, the accent, the love of Mom and Pop stores, even the way she did her hair or stared in distrust at his car. He knew the type, girls who spent so long living all uptight that the idea of letting loose scared them…Scared and fascinated, and somewhere in there she had a longing for it. Or if she didn’t he would help her realize she had one.
He took off his sunglasses, slowly placing them in his coat pocket as he glanced at her, making their way into the coffee shop. He inhaled deeply, appreciating the fresh baked smells of food that made one’s mouth water, The simple stuff that never went out of style. “Mmm.” He spoke aloud, “Did I mention that my office supplies bagels for everyone every morning?” He chuckled, “Yes ma’am we know the important things.”
Maxine clicked her tongue, “probably will, but you should be fine just this one time.” She said, lightly joking. This was a familiar feeling that had been too long since she felt, that alternate self that she’d put on with a pantsuit and neatly done hair- kissing up to the boss, for no reason other to try and gain favor just in case.
“Right down this way,” She said, shifting her purse back up to her shoulder and her coffee between the both of her hands. It wasn’t a bad part of town, but it wasn’t exactly upscale- it was homey, or at least it was to Maxine. She, for some reason or another,- probably tabloids, in all honesty- believed that he would never be caught dead in an area like this.
She couldn’t help but laugh, “if your openin’ bargain is baked goods, I’m afraid you may need to go back to the drawin’ board. Though, it does say mostly good thing about your offices.” She reasoned aloud, stepping back to allow him to look over the pastries or go straight to ordering, either action could be done with her enjoying her own space and coffee. She pulled out a chair and sat down, assuming that they wouldn’t eat in that car. Or at least, that’s what her inclination would be.
He actually took the time to laugh at her joke, shaking his head. “Well I hope you’re right, damned nuisance getting tires.” He was fairly certain everyone in America knew that nightmare, and that was why he usually had one of his staff handle it. He couldn’t be bothered with that. “Pshh.” He said, “You underestimate the virtue of a good bagel.” Once inside it did not take him long to order, despite the fact he took a moment to share a joke and a laugh with the proprietor. Just as he turned around he saw she had seated herself at a table.
He smirked slightly as she made eye contact with him, “I don’t mean to be a stickler, but I have limited time before I have to go back to work---” He raised his eyebrows, “And I intend to make the most of it. Come on now.” He nodded with his head, gesturing with it in the direction of the convertible. “It’ll be fun, and you paralegals all work too hard anyway.” He winked, “And I don’t care if the meeting is formal or not, I just want you to take the damned job Miss Dupuy.” He joked.
He nodded, stepping towards the door and allowing her to follow if she wished. He had a feeling she would, besides the enticing lure of the job he had offered, she was curious about him. Curious and surprised because he hadn’t met her expectations.
My father is a lot of unpleasant things, but murderer is not one of them.
Pretty Little Lies // Alan & Maxine // V8 w2 Friday Morning
“I’ll have you know that this baby is in perfect running condition.” Alan raised his eyebrows, as if such a question had no need to be asked by anyone, let alone Maxine. He waited, looking expectant until Maxine started to edge towards the car. Her solemn demeanor and the telling look of surprise on her face spoke volumes, and Alan had to fight to keep himself from smiling. She hadn’t expected any of this, and that was good. He liked to keep people guessing.
He noted the look on her face and then smirked. “I don’t get to take it out much.” He explained, bluntly. “So I thought I could talk to you—” He gestured with his hand, “And go for a ride. So sue me.” He grinned. He nodded suddenly, dangling the bait in front of her. “Look, if you want to stay here you sure can, I’m still going to take my car for a spin, but I can’t guarantee my schedule will be open later, or the job offer.” He made a face, shrugging. To all appearances he plainly looked as if he thought she was throwing away a priceless opportunity.
“Which would be sad considering I came all the way down here to give you first pick…and believe me there are paralegals that would kill for this job. If you’ll pardon the expression.” He stopped suddenly, pausing. As if realizing something. “Do they have blueberry bagels in there?” He asked, almost randomly. Referring to the coffee shop she had just left. “I forgot to grab breakfast and I am absolutely famished.”
“Forgive me if I’m a little bit skeptical, you did just go and disrupt the entire neighborhood,” She said with an eyebrow quirked. She stepped closer to the car, only a few inches away from it now. Still a safe distance, by casual standards, but kept her ground firmly outside of his car. “That can’t be good for your tires.” She said with a light-hearted shrug.
Maxine sighed, but straightened her posture after the moment was over, “of course I’d love to talk about the job, I just made the mistake to be thinkin’ it would be at an office.” And though she still would prefer an office to being trapped in a car with whom was for all purposes a stranger, she figured a car ride couldn’t hurt her. Especially if it was in the lap of luxury.
Just as she was about to pop the passenger door open, he brought up breakfast, and Maxine couldn’t be more thankful. “They’ve got all sorts, I believe blueberry’s one of them.” She said with a small smile and a step back. “They’re real nice people, and it’s a little homegrown place. You can meet all your little constituents while you’re at it,” She said, hoping that she didn’t sound too eager to delay the ride, or too bitter that he was the politician he was.
“Yeeeaah, that’s probably going to come back and bite me...” He mused after a moment, as if agreeing on the point that it wasn’t good for his tires at least. He glanced back at her with renewed interest when she mentioned the bagels, the idea sounding more enticing than it had before. “What am I waiting around here for then?” He questioned aloud, turning the engine off and stepping out of the car. “Lead me to this oasis?” He grinned.

Alan looks down on his father and harbors a great deal of resentment even after the man’s death. He considered him as ‘weak’ and ‘without will to act’.

Pretty Little Lies // Alan & Maxine // V8 w2 Friday Morning
No sooner had he gotten off the phone and planned to meet with Maxine to talk over ‘business’, then Alan had left his desk. He’d given Johnson notice of what he was doing as well as orders to carry out, the man was as dull as a lump of lead but at least he did his job well. Better than his predecessor anyway, and for the time being Alan was satisfied with not firing him. But at any rate that wasn’t what he was thinking about. Hell no. The sun was shining, the wind whistling around him, he had a great car and the world was his oyster. Everything was going his way.
He grinned, laughing aloud to himself as he cut off another driver, the other individual throwing up one finger at him. Alan didn’t pay it any heed, “Bless you too—” He chuckled, glancing at a street sign as he realized he was coming near to his destination. He wanted to impress her, and as such was dressed accordingly. A bright red car had a way of turning people’s heads, and he liked it.
He caught sight of her and pulled in, lurching to a halt as the sound echoed through the street. He knew she would stop to look, anyone would. Just as she caught sight of him, the sudden entrance having the reaction he desired, he pulled down his shades so that she saw his eyes. Making it easier for her to recognize him.“Hey!” He called, gesturing for her to get to it, “You coming or not? Hop in!”
Maxine had walked down to the coffee shop that sat right around the corner from her town home. If she had read anything right about Alan, it would be that as soon as their brief conversation ended, he would just pop up out of nowhere, at an inconvenient time just because it was convenient for him. Alan, at any rate, was not something she could deal with this early without a little sugar and caffeine bringing her to a semi-living state. “Thank you, Anita,” she said when she was given her coffee and bagel.
Surely he would still be at home, too far away to get on this side of town in a timely manner? Especially with riots rising and falling all around the area. Maxine walked on her way back home, watching her surroundings closely. The beauty of anti-Special bigotry was that it was utterly invisible- though that was also the most terrifying part of this entire situation.
Then, here she was, here to ally and align herself with the likes of Senator Shelby, a front runner for this bigotry. She wasn’t sure what it was she was hoping to accomplish by meeting with him, but she didn’t have much time to ponder it, with Alan squealing his tires and frightening all those passerby. She stood for a moment, completely in shock at his entire demeanor, “with you?” Maxine asked, approaching the car cautiously. “Is this even safe?” Though she assumed the answer was undoubtedly no, whether or not the car itself was safe- the driver was not.
“I’ll have you know that this baby is in perfect running condition.” Alan raised his eyebrows, as if such a question had no need to be asked by anyone, let alone Maxine.
