"No profession should promote oppression"

I went to a ‪#‎stoptheparade‬ protest this morning, people started gathering around 7 AM. This photo was taken moments before arrests begun. Protesters refuse to change course after officers prevent them from crossing the street.

I feel it’s important for everyone observing/participating in the actions taken across the country (and some parts of the world) to shine light on social injustice remember that there are bad cops and good cops. Not all cops are “pigs”, “monsters”, or “killers”. Generalizing/ stigmatizing a group of people based on the action of a few (not to say there are not a significant number of cops abusing their power) is an act of oppression that should not be adopted by people working for positive change.

That being said, it has to be acknowledged that the deaths of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Akai Gurley, Eric Garner, and Trayvon Martin and others ARE race issues. I have noticed people arguing that this (police brutality) is a “people” issue and race should be removed from the way we observe it. In a country that is still very far away from a post-racial society, we cannot afford to ignore race being a “people issue”.

As we marched through huge crowds waiting for the parade to come their way, some people shouted “thank you”, raised their fist in the air and even joined in chants if only briefly. I personally was not chanting because I was photographing the protest and jotting down quotes. I hope that future protest are more organized and cover more ground in more time than we did today.

These protests are meant to remind state and federal governments that citizens are aware of the faults in our system of law. Please don’t decide these protest are for nothing. Even if nationwide unrest from these trials quiets down, people will always find ways to encourage progress. Racism is a social construct that will always be worth fighting against.
