âSO WEâRE IN agreement here? itâs a date?â he teased, knowing full and well she would just scoff at his remark and brush it off. ( But he could still hope, though, right? ) The sensation of coldness, however, snapped him away from his flirty tendencies as he realized his imminent escape was growing closer and closer. Fucking finally. A careless mistake on his part, heâll admit, was the cause of his current situation â apparently hitting on a mob bossâ wife in his shady nightclub that was filled with his goons crawling around was looked down upon in this day and age. Who would have thought, right?
But as the rope loosened and loosened its vice on his hands, his signature grin that donned his features hastily faded upon the indication of how much Adeline had to fight â tooth and nail â to get to him, to save him. He was well-aware that the brunette could gladly take care of herself, but witnessing the sight of blood dripping down her arm ⊠well, letâs just say his protective instincts kicked in. And so, when the male was finally free of his restraints, he calmly rose out his chair â eyes shrouded in solemnity and bloodlust now â to stand next to her, rubbing at his wrists to ease away any aches that accompanied the torture of being held hostage.
He kicked a nearby pistol â probably fallen from the grips of one of the guys Adeline had so kindly pinned up against the wall â up from the floor to catch in his hand, releasing the magazine to count how many bullets he had left, and just his luck: a full clip. âI may not be your boyfriend,â he retorted in English, because the Russian currently threatening them should have some semblance of knowledge about the English language. âBut you were so flirting with me.â
But just when you thought that the typical Augustus returned â the Augustus who had nothing on his mind but sex, money, and alcohol â the ghostly smirk that dared creep onto his lips vanished into thin air as his expression hardened with a raising of the pistol and a pulling of the trigger. Supernatural powers or not, he was a damn good shot, which meant he never missed. So his eyes stayed glued on Adelineâs figure in front of him as the sounds of Kostyaâs grunts upon impact echoed in his ears, followed by the â thud â of his body hitting the floor.
âWord of advice,â he started in Italian, his voice much lower and huskier than usual. âHere in the real world, we donât talk to the enemy. So donât.â
A THOUSAND DIFFERENT thoughts ran through her head, her body was frozen as she watched Kostya take his last breath before he was gone. She always knew Augustus was a demon, lost in his greed and lust for power and money, but tonight his true self finally revealed itself to her. Except Ada didnât understand his motive, there was nothing for Augustus to possibly gain from killing Kostya since all of his assets would end up being frozen by law enforcement once they started to investigate the crime family.
It was an uncalled for decision on his part, an event that she should had expected from him. Something she could have prevented if she was faster. Better. Ada quickly clenched her fists together before unclenching them and kept her eyes forward observing the menâs shocked facial expressions at their fallen boss, refusing to turn around and meet his eyes and reveal the naked emotion in her eyes. âHereâs a lesson for you,â she stated evenly in Italian, displacing her fury into the atmosphere lowering the temperature of the room to that of a freezer, âFirst step of negotiation is sharing information with the enemy.â
Explaining the death of Kostya to the police would have to wait, Ada had lives to save. Kostya promised women back in Russia that he would pay for their fare to America and help them earn citizenship only to sell them into sex slavery once they arrived. Those who were defiant were kept high eventually causing them to become addicts. Even with their boss dead now, the crime family would pay for this.Â
Ada removed all hints of weakness from her face, a habit she developed from practice of studying her expression in the mirror each morning before she started class. âIn thirty minutes, the police will be here and all of your files concerning your business will be released to them,â she told the men in English, âWhich will get you all ten years maximum. â
âHowever, once the files on your side business are deciphered two hours after your arrest. I promise that you will spend the rest of your lives rotting away in prison,â she added, her steel gaze burned into their skin. It was a guarantee that the crime family would be spending the rest of their life in jail, but it wasnât given the girls they had would be rescued in time. Â âTell me where the girls are now,â she commanded.
âOr I promise you all that your entire family will end up in the same prison as the Ivashkov family.â From their facial expression, the mobsters heard her unspoken message. Ada would feed them to the wolves if she didnât get what she wanted from them. Â
