What a hipster looks like to the future.
Two things happened within the last 10 minutes: 1) I read this blog post by Russell Davies; 2) my coworkers made a comment akin to "Of course you would own a VHS player, hipster."
A brief aside, my coworkers - who range in being 10-20 years older than me - have assigned me the role of Resident Hipster as both a term of endearment and to fill the market research void. I take no offense at it.
In this sense, Tom & Tats (coworkers) are a vision of the future, and the future looks at my place in current space & time and places me in the hipster category. I don't have a categorization of the future other than "future" since it as yet seems undefined to me.
A few things that qualify me for hipsterdom according to Tom & Tats:
1. Owning the afformentioned VHS player.
2. Living in Georgetown (this was the original evidence of hipstery).
3. My recent obsession with container gardens.
4. My dog Charlie, for the following reasons:
4a. He eats locally sourced, organic, gluten-free dog food.
4b. His collar is made of organic cotton and soy-based ink, and his leash is made from recycled climbing rope.
4c. His dog treats cost more than my weekly grocery budget.
5. My boyfriend, for a few reasons:
5c. He owns a fixed gear.
6. Listening to NPR religiously.
I believe I could make a similar list for both Tom & Tats, with the title "Things that _____ did when he was the age I am now," but that lack emphasis since I don't have a good generational category title such as "Things that made _____ a hipster before hipster was a category."
Also, I can justify all these things easily not as evidence of being hipster, but rather as choices made in the course of living everyday life. (Ironically, the justifcation seems to make me more of a hipster to Tom & Tats).
Justifications for my so-called hipster choices:
1. I have an awesome collection of VHS tapes that I painstakingly recorded from television when I was younger that I like to revisit.
2. I have a yard and a nice house in Georgetown that is way cheaper than it would be on Capitol Hill (where I used to live). Also, I'm too old to live around the Linda's/Cha Cha bar scene anymore.
3. I eat a lot of veggies and it seems more fun & more responsible to grow them at home.
4a. Charlie's food may be ridiculous and expensive, but it also keeps his coat healthier, his teeth cleaner, and will probably help him live longer than if I fed him the doggy equivalent of Cheetos that you buy at Walmart.
4b. The closest pet store only sells organic cotton, soy-based collars, and he can't chew through his climbing rope leash.
5. I love my boyfriend and I'll let him explain his own "hipster" choices.
6. NPR is interesting and it's usually the only thing to listen to on my commute.
7. I've owned typewriters since I was little because my mom gave me her old ones. It's not my fault people have starting buying vintage/"vintage" typewriters because Urban Outfitters decided they were trendy.
So I am what a hipster looks like to the future, and someday I'll get the chance to make the same judgments on a younger generation. When I have the credibility to do so, I'll know I've made it to the future. I'm not sure what this says about the possibilities for time travel.
