At the very least, Erin had warned him that Jo knew. Knew what? The facts without the details? Somehow that felt worse. It was as though he was expecting the questions from the blonde the next time they ran into each other and to be honest? He wasnât ready. He would never be ready, it was why he chose never to go back in the first place. Jace hadnât dealt with his grief, not back then, certainly not now. He didnât want to talk about it, didnât want to think about it and all Jo was to him now was this walking, talking reminder of the days where he was happy. Of course, he was pleased to see her live and kicking, she deserved to live, way more than he did⊠But it didnât make it any easier to look at her knowing the way he left things so unexplained. He thought he was doing the right thing by her. He still did.Â
Thatâs why heâs stayed out of sight since he came into the bar an hour ago. With a friend of his who didnât know his history, it was easy to pretend he wasnât watching her since he arrived. Jace could see how drunk she was, heâd sat down and told himself it wasnât his problem, a thought which he was willing to swear by⊠Until he saw her inability to kick ass like he knew she could. A grumpy huff, he shot back his whiskey and got up, made a b-line to the other side of the bar and said nothing, just simply gripped the guys shoulders and tore him back, pulling him away from her. He fell down, Jace turned to look at him and watched him stumble back to his feet. The guy rambled, something about her wanting it, something about how women love him? Jesus christ, what a fucking asshole. âIâve been dead nearly two decades and even I know that women these days hold their own, they donât go for pushy tossers like you.â Jace chuckled, right before his elbow came up to smack the guys nose, pushing him back to his knees.
He wasnât going to wait for him to get back up, to be kicked out or reprimanded. All he did was turn around to Jo and grabbed her arm ( gently, but firmly. ) âCome on.â It wasnât exactly a request, he tugged lightly to get her to move with him and out of the bar. Once they were outside and a few steps away, he stopped, turned to look at her and released her arm. âYou gonna walk with me or do I needâa throw you over my shoulder?â Hey, donât let it be said that he didnât give her the option. âYouâre gonna come with me either way, drink a gallon of water and sleep it off.â He was calm, soft even - but inside? His head was swirling. That inner voice that knew his care right now yeeted every harsh thing heâd said to her because⊠If he was dragging her out of the situation she was just in? Of course it showed he cared. He wouldnât leave any woman subject to that, least of all this woman.Â
All at once, things were moving very fast. Deciding very quickly that tequila was not her friend, she moved away from the wall as soon as the weight behind her was removed. She blinked as she noticed the man on the ground, moved by a seemingly invisible force, but then her eyes landed on Jace and things were starting to make sense. Stumbling backwards slightly, the wall more or less held her up as she watched the altercation. A loud laugh erupted from her lips as Jace clocked the dude, a hand coming up to cover her mouth. âHa, nice.â Jo spit on him for good measure with a solid kick the groin. Kick him while he was down? Absolutely. But before she could get any say in, she found herself stumbling sideways as Jace propelled her out of the bar. Scowling, she quickly reached for her drink on the barâs surface, taking the glass with her as they moved outside. The fresh air hit her all at once, sobering her up just enough for her to plant her feet and stop blindly following him. At his ultimatum, her eyebrows raised, and she put the stolen glass to her lips to take a drink of the contents inside. âNo,â she said simply, shaking her head. âNope, no sir. Iâm gonna go with option C here. Seeeeeeee you later. â She giggled, nodding and apparently feeling clever and proud of herself.Â
