Nicky been sitting at the bar for a while now. Watching people, listening in when he could. It was fascinating to see how many different personalities entered the club every night. New people looking to ‘wow’ the next girl into their pants. Like they needed much encouragement when they were usually getting paid for it. Nicky watched the older gentleman flaunting his cash at everyone who batted an eyelid at him and rolled his eyes. Pathetic. He felt almost sad for the man, but before he could think anymore of it the voice next to him caught his attention. He turned to look, recognising the face instantly. “My, my, Etta. Who knew such a pretty face could come from such a sleazy bloodline?” he joked, taking a sip of his whisky. “Sure. Take a seat, sweetheart. I’ll buy you a drink. What’s your poison?” He motioned the bartender over as he asked, ready for Etta’s order.
Something told her that she was going to regret this decision. She didn't particularly know why-- or how, but it was almost a certainty. Though, she could admit to there being intriguing aspects of Nicky. It was in the same way that an obnoxious but charming puppy was. “I'm glad at least one of us is amused by this,” she laughed, brushing her dreads over her shoulder. It gave her a better look at him. She hated that he had what could be arguably considered 'kind' eyes. It wasn’t fair. With no real objection, she took a seat on the stool next to him. It gave her a better vantage point of her uncle and the surrounding patrons. The elder man was still making a fool of himself; however, he was no closer to realizing her place of employment. There was that at least. At the rate he was going, he'd be out of money before he knew and unable to go back anyway. “Same as yours-- just sour.” Realizing that he'd just been sitting there, not really engaging, her interest was further piqued. “What gives? Figure you'd already be over-- or under some pretty young blonde by this time of night. But you’re sitting here alone...” She cocked her head to the side and added, “or were.”

“‘saint’s definitely never something i’ve been known to be, but i have to admit i love the contrast,” sam replied quietly, hazel eyes darting across the length of etta’s body as though she was never going to see the other woman again. part of her had assumed that the fluttering in her belly would fade in time, but even making eye contact with the bouncer during a given shift was usually enough to make the pilot weak in the knees. it had been a long, long while since anyone had made her feel that way and now, leaning into the older woman, her head buzzing happily from the alcohol she’d had so far, sam felt entirely at ease with her feelings. there was no pressure, no judgement, no concern hovering in the back of her mind that being openly involved with a coworker was a recipe for disaster. she could spend a night appreciating etta in public as thoroughly as she wanted to and no one would say a thing. it was a taste of freedom sam had been craving so long it felt as though galaxies had been birthed and destroyed in the time she hadn’t had it. her smile was practically effervescent— dimpled and bright and only the slightest bit shy before she tilted her head to kiss etta gingerly, little more than a peck before she pulled away, her smile still firmly in place. “coming from you i’m taking that as the highest compliment, so, thank you,” the blonde replied finally, reaching out to rest her hands on the lapels of etta’s suit jacket. “so, anything you’re dying to do at this shindig?”
aesthetically, the contrast was something else. it was just the right amount-- beyond that still remained to be seen. perhaps, she already had an inkling as to just how well things could work. etta was intuitive enough about these kinds of things. she'd after all gotten to witness the most loving relationship in the world. it was the sort that movies envied-- never quite getting it right. however, that was a lifetime ago and she'd become jaded since. but she hadn't been with sam, not from that first night they'd met. “it's always a good look for us,” she hummed, comparing their darker and lighter complexions internally. visually followed while her gaze shifted between them. the cheeky pull of her lips spoke to how proud of herself she felt for the observation. etta hated it. she hated the way how her cheeks warmed at the kiss. the two had done far more than that. she could still remember just how it felt having sam beneath her-- chest erratically moving as her fingers and tongue went to work. and yet, she still had this effect on her from just mere lips. though, etta could recall just how good it had been when she sat on them. rather than giving a vocal response, a quiet 'you're welcome' if you will, she stood on her tiptoes to brush her mouth against sam's jawline. it was intended to be sweet-- mostly sweet. “how much shit would I get for saying i really want to dance?” her head bowed a smidgen, almost unable to look at the blonde. “i'm kind of awful at it, but I do enjoy it... and i guess my company isn't the worst...” almost shyly, she cleared her throat. “what about you, babe? what’s on your masquerade bucket list?”

“Yeah, this party’s a lot of fun!” Jamie exclaimed with a big smile. Then, his eyes went wide and went to follow where hers had gone. “Wait, really? Him?” he asked, trying not to seem too eager to look over. “Are you sure?”
At least one of them was enjoying themselves. Not that Etta wasn't but parties weren't really her scene anymore. “Uh huh, the tall redhead.” She pointed towards some older man that looked a bit like Prince Harry or his father if he had bright hair. “One hundred percent. He's been watching you since you first got up to dance.”

sam was, to put it mildly: drunk. it wasn’t that it was particularly rare for her to drink, or rare for her to get tipsy enough to feel like she was floating, or the human embodiment of sunshine or something else entirely ridiculous and opposed to every second of the day she spent pretending she was tough as nails and hated the world. the masquerade had seemed like a perfect opportunity to let loose for at least a few hours, and sam had done just that— several shots of whiskey and a beer or two spaced out over the course of the night had her feeling pleasantly floaty, and she’d found herself searching the club ( for reasons she wasn’t even half sure she understood until she spotted etta in the crowd and sam felt her stomach flutter in response ). “hey, you,” she murmured in greeting, pressing herself against etta’s back with a broad, crooked smile punctuated by a pause to allow the blonde to press several kisses to a spot on etta’s neck just above the collar of her shirt. “i think we ought to get you dressed up more often, i’m really digging it.”
the bouncer only dressed up for weddings and funerals. unfortunately, she had a lot of experience with both of those. that was the extent of it for personal preferences. but that night, she'd actually found herself enjoying it. being in very minimal disguise, etta reveled that moment. there was something about being somewhat hidden from the rest of the world that made her more confident. for once, it wasn't solely reliant on her puffing her chest and putting on a show for others. she genuinely felt attractive-- and almost better than. etta wouldn't admit it, but she loved that there was no hierarchy for an evening. they were all one. and if etta wanted to be-- she could have been a millionaire. she could pretend to be one. taken away from her thoughts, her lips curled into a sheepish smile. she looked as beautiful as ever. “hey, yourself,” she hummed, craning her head so that she was carefully looking up at sam. she half expected her to be off with some younger woman. one who didn't take an ibuprofen every night before bed because her back ached. or because a few squats caused her thighs and hamstrings to throb. instead, she focused on how good it felt having sam's body against hers-- and how her kisses set fire to her skin. above. “uh huh,” she agreed, chancing a glance between them. “we even complement each other tonight... what are the odds?” she turned herself so that she could carefully wrap her arms around sam's waist. “you look gorgeous, by the way.”

Jamie knew that people weren’t supposed to recognize each other tonight, but Jamie still felt like he was pretty recognizable with the lean frame and the blonde hair. Still, he was enjoying himself, dancing in the basement club until he needed a break. He went to sit down at one of the empty booths until someone approached him.
“Hey, you looked like you were having a good time,” she commented, taking a seat opposite him. “I just came over here to tell you that...” Etta looked around for a moment until her eyes landed on some older man. “He's been paying a lot of attention to you tonight.”
