The Ships Are Left To Rust | Sharon & Steve
The shipyard was fantastic for cover and great for creeping up on the opposing forces, but it was utterly awful for trying to locate someone, as Steve was trying to locate Sharon. He passed by several fallen forms, and it was only when he heard the crackle of his radio that he allowed himself to take a deep breath and slow his steps. Despite the potential dire situation they found themselves in, he couldn’t help but crack a smile at her words. “I’m doing fine, Carter, but thanks for the offer." However, the sound of gunfire promptly wiped the grin from his face. They were soldiers fighting in a war, but he wouldn’t let Sharon fall in this one. They still had challenges to push each other in and a damn lot of work to get done — not that he doubted she couldn’t take care of herself. He was just too much of a team player to do anything but take off immediately at a run, following the sounds until he could get a clear look at the fight unfolding.Â
Sure enough, he counted four men as well, barely blinking as one of them fell. Unfortunately, they stood directly in between himself and Sharon. “It looks like we could use a distraction," he whispered into the radio, glancing around rapidly for just that. One of the men turned in his direction, and before he got the chance to shout a warning, Steve threw his shield, hitting him directly in the chest. He darted out from the safety of his hiding spot, grabbing his shield as he ran and ducking behind it as the other men began shooting their guns. The force of the bullets reverberated across the metal, but at that point, Steve’s only focus was to run.
He dove behind the car where he knew Sharon was, rolling back to his feet as the back-up arrived to assist the welcoming committee. He gave her a quick glance over, ensuring no bullets had hit her, before allowing the corners of his lips to twitch up in that half-smile that was becoming so characteristic of their meetings. “I think they know we’re here. There’s five men on the other side of the car, and they all have guns. Stay behind my shield until we get close enough to disarm them, and then we should be able to take care of the rest. Sound like a plan?”
The sound of bullets reverberating off the vibranium shield got louder and louder as Steve approached her location. Bullet shells flew past her face, landing on the roof of the car and the ground below her as she held the trigger of her rifle, suppressing the men on the ship for a moment. The deafening sound of rapid gunfire ended, forcing Sharon to hop off the bumper, and reload the rifle with a new magazine. Sharon spun around to the side of the car and released another stream of bullets towards one of the men on the ship. She noticed Steve when she stepped behind the car once again. For a moment, she fought the urge to crack a smile for him. Despite her efforts, Sharon returned his greeting with a smile that she felt he had become too familiar with.Â
Sharon intently listened to him over all the gunfire. Swiftly pulling out her side arm from its holster, Sharon removed the safety and whipped around Steve. A single shot was fired from her gun before one of the oncoming men could successfully aim their weapons at her. Her bullet pierced its way through one of her assailants head. She quickly jumped behind the destroyed car again to avoid the onslaught of gunfire aimed at her. “Now there’s only four,” she shouted over the gun fire as she tucked her sidearm back into its holster. Sharon propped up her rifle, aimed it and stood behind Steve. “I like our odds, Cap. If I get shot, I’m blaming you.”Â
For a moment, there was complete silence. Before she could even sneak a peak out from the side of the SUV, Sharon felt a man’s grip around her arm. A second after, she whipped around the side of the car and was slammed face first onto the side of the car. Blood trickled down her forehead and the sound of rapid gunfire on the other side of the car begun again. Everything was a blur for a brief second, but her survival instincts kicked in. She ducked, avoiding a punch from the man who attacked her. Still a bit dazed, she swiped her leg across the ground, but he dodged. Sharon rolled to the side and stood on her feet. Her assailants body slammed against hers, pushing her back onto another car. His body pinned her down, and before she knew it, he drew a blade. They wrestled for a moment but soon the edge of the blade was only inches from her neck. Adrenaline pumped faster through Sharon’s body as she attempted to keep the knife away from her neck. Her knee smashed against his groin, forcing him to drop his knife. As soon as the weight was lifted off her body, she pulled out her sidearm fired two shots into his chest. Sharon quickly turned, gun still aimed when she saw saw two men run around from the car and aim their rifles at her.
