QUOTE - "I realized I could use the fluencies as a designer to make my work." COMMENT - This quote spoke to me personally as it shines light on what it means to be an artist. What makes art so beautiful, in my eyes, is the freedom of self-expression and the ability to make use of anything to spread a great message. There is nothing that dictates art, and there is no facet of art that should be looked down upon simply because it doesn't befit certain expectations/desires. With this quote, Kruger has not only demonstrated her creativity, but also expressed her statement as an artist. As an aspiring artist myself, I am inspired by her and desire to adapt both her talent and the confidence she has in her own work. QUESTION - Why do some people not resonate with certain 'styles' of art? How can an artist learn from Barbara Kruger herself? How can an artist merge different, seemingly contrasting ideas together to create a finished, integrated piece?

Personal Statement: This project served as a challenging yet entertaining experience for me. I felt moved by our original sentence, "an irresponsible security measure launches a national crisis", as I think it effectively captured many of our thoughts regarding social issues within our country and current policies regarding immigration, and I was strongly connected to this topic as somebody who migrated to the United States from another country myself. The brainstorming and development phases of this project were certainly difficult, as we often cycled through different ideas and proposals. Eventually, we decided to further improve the previously selected sentence into "a hilariously bad security measure launches a national crisis" as we thought it was a more effective reflection of the comedic tone that was intended for the project. The idea behind this 'comedic tone' was to indicate a 'so bad that it is funny' sentiment regarding our ideas, as well as to attract and entertain younger audiences that frequently utilize social media by making use of popular memes. The creative process of the final response itself was split into two parts: a creative phase, and a presentation phase. For the creative phase, we spent time painting and creating the posters that the presenters are holding in the video. For the presentation phase, we travelled to the parking lot of a Publix and protested by chanting our sentence. For the viral aspects of this project, we decided to create a YouTube account and post our response on YouTube, and made an effort to gain traction by making use of hashtags, as well as sharing the video with other people. Overall, despite the challenges, this project served as not only an educational and enjoyable experience for us, but we also hope that our message can genuinely reach people who are facing issues involving security measures and the immigration crisis.

While working on the project, we first started with the posters, then the chalk in another location. The reason we decided to use red, blue, and white for our poster is to represent the American flag as well as the two major political parties of the US. The “SEND HELP” posters are used with this drippy font to show desperation on help from anyone. We set out to record the video during class time in the parking lot of the Publix plaza. After these parts were documented, the video was edited with many clips and effects. In terms of struggles, our main struggle was how we would orientate/structure the posters. The chalk was also a pain since we kept wondering where we would do it mostly cause we did not know if doing it on a sidewalk would be great. Other than that, they came out looking great and I feel satisfied with how it came out.

As you can see, this is our current timeline for our project. The reason we decided to use a message via a group is because it refers back to our sentence. A non foolish and a responsible security could be sending messages in private as a form of communication with others without the need to disclose everything. Not only that, the fact we are not using a exact address further adds to the sense of security because while we mention a campus, it leads to questions that would not get answered, like where is it located. Again, it leads to being anonymous.

In this picture, I decided to go for a sort of style similar to comic books with how they have different panel sizes as well as how you can read them. I choose this style since it reflected how similarly to reading instructions for how to make something; you would need to move your eyes around and learn what would be next. I wanted to ensure that when making this, it was both understandable and not feel all over the place because while comic book panels do make you move your eyes in different directions, you can at least understand what happens.

7. VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: FINAL PROPOSAL

Proposal: Combination of all three original ideas (Poster, chant, and chalk)

As a group, we decided that the best way to present our statement is to combine our ideas into one. They could have worked by themselves, but putting them together would create a stronger emphasis on our sentence and make us work harder. Therefore, we will to a shopping plaza to record a video of us holding up the posters and chanting. The video will be recorded in a casual style due to the reworking of our sentence to be more comedic in nature. (“A hilariously bad security measure launches a national crisis.” - this sentence is not present on the photos posted below as they are old) The chalk portion would either be done in the same site or on a sidewalk that the specific member chooses. With the posters and chanting, we would repeat the sentence until the person with the main red and blue poster gets on their knees. This would then lead into chanting “send help.” After everything is recorded, the video will also be edited in a comedic nature to match with the sentence and then be uploaded to YouTube for others to see. This proposal allows the sentence and protest to be more bold and for lines to be crossed on the way that people react to things.

6. VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: PROPOSE

Proposal #3: Chant - our third proposal is heavily inspired by our original 1-minute collaborative video - a chant of our phrase at a public location while making "SEND HELP" papers. However, this proposal would be on a much larger scale and would take place somewhere like a movie theater, mall, parking lot, or courtyard. These locations were picked as they can be very packed and noisy, so we would have to be conscious of where we place the camera and we would have to speak loud as well. Each one of us would hold up adorned posters utilizing our message and also the words "SEND HELP" on pieces of paper as we kneel down. This method would measure the reactions of people in public, and how they would react in response to our chanting and kneeling.

Proposal #2: Sidewalk - Our second proposal was to write our message over a public sidewalk utilizing chalk. We would select a largely populated street, utilized by many pedestrians from dawn to dusk. This method would intend to document how individuals would interact with or react to our message while going about their daily lives - whether it be to stop and read it, engage with it, or simply step over it. This would tell us a lot about how typical people who live in the U.S. view political/social activism, or how they respond to important issues within our country. To read it means to acknowledge the problem, to engage with it means to push the message, and to step over it means to ignore the message altogether. Reference Images:

Proposal #1: Poster - our first proposal was to create a poster delineating the previously created sentence, "An irresponsible security measure launches a national crisis." We planned to hold or hang the poster near a government agency center, such as a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services center, which would appeal primarily to immigrants, but also to typical everyday people who live in the U.S. This poster and statement would be a representation of the utter chaos that is immigration and natural security right now with things like the border, deportation raids, and overall political division.

4. VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: PRESENT (FINAL)

When free reign was given to distribute a sentence to the world, we were quite uncertain of what to do. I had originally proposed to perform in front of the fountain near the Panther Hall Swimming Pool, but the group eventually decided to go in front of the Wellness and Recreation Center. The sentence "An irresponsible security measure launches a national crisis" makes it sound like the world is going to turmoil, which is ironic as we are chanting it outside of a building that is meant to foster health and quality of life. Our chant is a simple repetition of the sentence, though it is interrupted by a live action of writing "Send Help" on pieces of paper for each person to hold. This represents how the crisis is affecting people like us; regular citizens. What I found to be insane after the recording of this video is the cars in the background; a blue and red car both facing separate directions. It is symbolic of the two major political parties in the US, which are historically divided, especially on topics like national security and international affairs. This video is a representation of the internal crisis that this country is facing amongst the government as well as its affect on the whole planet.

Statement: My idea was to actually go to Burger King for this as I thought it would be the perfect both figurative and literal representation of my project. Despite the fact the place is called Burger "King", it is simply a fast food joint - which is usually associated with cheap or junk food. This enlightens my concept of my final project, which was to appear as a royal, elite social class figure even though the costume was covered in household, disposable items. Additionally, the plastic crown I utilized is very similar to the iconic Burger King crown, so it is an appropriate callback. Unfortunately, I was not able to get around to this during the weekend, so I attempted to edit a greenscreen of a Burger King interior behind my photo for a general idea of what it was meant to look like.
