AJ grew up in Detroit with a big family of five siblings. They were pretty much always scraping the bottom of the barrel for anything, but her parents did their best to provide for the kids.

The kids were, however, just a bunch of ruffians most of the time that roamed the trailer park getting themselves into trouble, AJ usually the one behind most of that.

Growing up there, she had a best friend that lived next door that she was around more often than not while her parents were working. The family fed her and let her hang around. The dad was a mechanic and she spent a lot of time in his garage learning to fix cars.

It was the only thing she ever ended up being any good at, so when she graduated she went to a trade school to become a mechanic all while her best friend pursued a career in professional racing.

When her best friend made it big, she was brought along as his lead mechanic and part of his pit crew and she traveled the world with him to races all across the globe.

The best friend was a massive hothead and got involved in an illegal street race with Alejandra in the car. There was a crash that spun them out and when AJ was pulling her best friend out from the car, a second car came flying through and hit them. The car erupted into flames that she was caught in and her hip was completely shattered.

After the accident, her best friend up and left her behind because he couldn't handle the guilt that she was hurt because of his dumb decision. AJ went back to Detroit to be with family at first, but did not adjust well at all.

She had spent every summer growing up on Marshall Island, where her best friend's aunt and uncle live. They reached out to invite her to stay with them during her recovery, hoping the change of scenery will do her some good.

AJ is now newish to town and staying with the best friend's aunt and uncle that took her in. They own the biggest horse ranch and stables on the island and she's "working" there as a ranch hand doing whatever they need her to do. Mostly. Sometimes. Mostly she's moping around being pissed off about everything.

Almost reminiscent of how things had been before, when she would feel a swell of pride at the thought of her successful older cousin and his best friend. How things had changed. ❛ I will, I’m sorry I haven’t been around more. With Ollie and the store, I’ve barely had time to see Penelope. ❜

Neglecting one animal for another was deplorable at best, and she was truly busy with the dog and her work, but another part of her couldn’t stand to see the question in her parents' eyes. Had she heard from him? Would he be joining them this summer? It was hard on them, she knew, presumably even harder on AJ… and yet she couldn’t quite bring herself to visit for longer than a polite stopover. ❛ Does she still make a roast every Sunday? ❜ A relic from her English upbringing, the woman had even insisted on traveling several towns over to find the ‘right’ popover pan.

"Honestly, fuck Penelope, it's me that matters," she countered with a wave of her hand. As good as the change had been for her to get away from Detroit, there was still a sense of being out of place that she couldn't shake living with her best friend's family. He was the reason that everything that happened had happened and trying to balance her anger with him alongside the gratefulness she felt towards his family wasn't an easy task. At least with Ana around more, it lessened some of the pressure she felt to fake being happy all the time for her parents.

Picking up the next random item off a shelf to inspect, AJ was now just trying to keep herself busy. Anything to keep herself occupied, to keep the more negative thoughts at bay even for just a short amount of time. "Best fucking roast every Sunday, yeah," she confirmed with a soft chuckle. AJ was glad to have the home cooked meals, especially since they meant she didn't have to leave the ranch to find food. The way she saw it, the less she had to go out, the better. "How much longer are you stuck here for? I was gonna go do beers at the bar tonight if you wanna go. Or whatever."

When he'd stepped out back to drop some broken down cardboard boxes into the recycling dumpster, Charlie hadn't expected the exchange that caught his attention before he could complete his task. Instead, the man stood there stunned, unable to move or interject. The dealer only gave him a quick, nervous glance before he vacated the area and Charlie wondered if this was going to be his and AJ's thing. Running into each other when she was compromised in some way. There wasn't really any judgement. When he'd been low he'd sought escapes in ways he shouldn't have. Hell, he'd abandoned the entire northern hemisphere. Sometimes Charlie even considered how easily it would be to slip back into that temporary bliss. In the end a moment of peace wasn't worth always being on the chase. "Who the fuck is Charles?" His voice was rougher than intended and he hadn't immediately recognized the frustration that had come out. "Funny that you mention bump..." There was a gesture to her jacket where she'd stuffed her prize into a pocket. "Why don't you hold off on that and come inside and have a beer?"

"Charles is the cute nickname I've given you in the hopes that it'll get you to ignore anything you've seen tonight," she offered with a slight wince, picking up on the tone of voice that he was giving. Obviously he'd seen enough, as evidenced by his following words. Instinctively, a hand went up to her jacket pocket, patting it to make sure that the drugs were still there. A sigh left her lips, head bobbing gently in his direction. Whatever he thought about what he'd just seen, AJ respected that he at least didn't seem to be ready to call it in or get her into any more trouble than she was already pushing herself into. "A beer would be good. I'd love a beer," she agreed tentatively. It wasn't what she wanted or what she felt like she needed, but the company would be a welcome distraction if nothing else. Shifting away from the wall she'd been posted up against, AJ stuffed her hands down deep into her pockets, falling in to follow Charlie back inside. Pausing right before they went through to the inside, AJ stopped short, biting at her lower lip before speaking again. "Hey, um. Do you maybe know that guy? Is he - is his shit safe, you think?" AJ had no idea whether or not the dealer could be trusted. She was still a relative newbie in town and was just taking her chances on the first thing she could find.

The beach had become a source of comfort and rejuvenation. The sand that had settled between her toes years ago when Ferah had first set foot on the shores of Marshall Island during her honeymoon had only called for her to return. It was wild to think she'd come back to a place tied to a big memory with her ex-husband, the cheating asshole, but the brunette had changed the way it felt within her chest. When she moved around the small town it wasn't full of haunts and heartbreaks, in fact every corner of the town came with a possibility to make it her own. After growing up in a place like New York where most everyone was a face in the crowd it felt empowering.

An afternoon stroll and possible dipping of her toes in the sand was prompted by a need for fresh air and to fight off the headache that was forming thanks to a difficult client. As grateful as Ferah was for business her least favorite part often had to be dealing with people's ideals. Some were just completely unrealistic. The thoughts of work and that too long of a phone call that ended in frustration were pushed from her thoughts, especially when she caught sight of a ghost. At least Ferah was certain she recognized the face. It had actually been difficult for her to forget her first foray into anything resembling romance following her marriage gone up in flames and loss of her best friend. "Do I look like a Jill to you?" The question came out more confused than anything. Her Turkish roots had always been obvious. "AJ, right?" Her brow creased a little then, certain she was recognizing the woman in front of her with the horses. "Either I was forgettable... which, my ego really can't take another hard hit, or... you're pretending you don't recognize me."

Over the years of traveling with her best friend, AJ had been no stranger to leaving a string of broken hearts in her wake. Living around the world in places weeks or sometimes months at a time had made it easy to get caught up in something that she knew would end the day they packed up the pit crew and moved on to their next race. It was the life of a nomad and one that had never really caught up with AJ until right that moment, standing in front of one of the people that she'd managed to hurt along the way. She knew exactly who Ferah was. Some romances lingered in her thoughts more than others, the possibilities sometimes convincing her that maybe, just maybe life wouldn't have been so bad to try settling down. In the end, though, her job had always come first and leaving without a big fuss of trying to make promises she'd never keep had always been the easier way to handle things.

Wincing a bit, AJ gave a vague nod, knowing that it had been a longshot that she'd have been able to get lucky enough that Ferah would have forgotten the time they'd spent together. "I mean, anyone could be a Jill really. If you think about it. Names are just...yeah," she mumbled back with a wave of her hand. A lame excuse that petered out before she even knew where it was going. The woman's words had her head dropping down, the twinge of guilt something that she wanted to batter away and not pay any mind to. "Alright, yeah, a little bit pretending that I don't know you. I was hoping that maybe you'd forgotten what an ass I was," she offered with a shrug, that being as close to an apology as Alejandra could conceivably get. "And that we could start over as strangers. It sounded better in my head." As much as she would rather have continued on pretending she didn't remember Ferah, she also couldn't get the words out of her head about the woman's ego not being able to take the hard hit again. It wasn't something AJ would have understood much of before her accident, but now, she got it. She barely went out in public anymore, the scars and burns that now marred her features leaving her with a hollowed sense of self. "I ah - totally meant to call. I guess you wouldn't believe that I lost your number either, huh?"

ANA'S EYES SNAPPED UP from the box she'd started to return to. ❛ You wouldn't. ❜ Marie Hughes was an understanding woman, a peaceful woman who valued balance above all else… unless provoked. She was where Ana got her temper from, and there would be absolute hell to pay if she even suspected that her beloved daughter had dared to discount the donated piece.

❛ She would be just as mad at you, y'know, ❜ she pointed out, a smirk finding its way to her lips, ❛ for not arguing to pay more for its worth. ❜ AJ was as good as family in all but name; if one daughter was to be punished, the other wouldn't make it out of the crosshairs. That ship had sailed about twenty summers ago. ❛ And, unlike me, you have to see her at dinner. I'm nice and safe all the way over here. ❜ Lies. If Mama Hughes had it out for her, there was no escape.

The threat was completely unfounded, as there was no part of AJ that would ever tempt fate by trying to provoke Mama Hughes. That was a less she had learned at a very young age and even now into her thirties she knew better than to try it with that woman. "You make a very valid point and I will happily return the vase to the spot it deserves, right where everyone can admire it," she acquiesced with a bemused smile. It was small moments like this that made her feel almost normal for a split second and the smile was one of the more genuine ones she'd held in the months since the accident.

"You should come by more for dinner, save me from having to be the constant center of attention," she called out, arms shifting to curl around her front. She appreciated what the family was doing for her and would never complain if she could help it, but sometimes the constant concern and doting got to be a lot. AJ understood it. She was still in recovery, still trying to find her way back to her old self, and it was fair to have them worrying. She just wasn't ready to focus on being better yet.

IT WAS AN EASY DAY AT THE GALLERY, which meant that for Anastasia it was the perfect time to do some rearranging. She liked to rotate the pieces she had on display to prevent the shop from growing stale, however, from the looks of it someone had landed on the one piece she was barred from moving. ❛ If you’re after a flower vase, I don’t really think that will suit what you’re going for, ❜ she offered over a half-unpacked box of figurines.

The vase itself wasn’t outwardly flawed. In fact, the emerald green ceramic glaze was quite striking when the light hit it. ❛ My mum brought it in, insisted I put it on the shelf with the others, ❜ she dropped her voice an octave, as if the woman might materialize from the sheer mention. ❛ She went to a pottery and wine night with my dad the other week… I didn’t have the heart to tell her that she cut the clay off the wheel wrong. If you look, there’s a hole in the bottom — which is great if you don’t mind a soaked table. ❜

When she wasn't avoiding the world or running errands to help out around the ranch, AJ found herself spending a fair bit of her time around the art gallery. She hated art or at least wasn't cultured enough to understand it, but the comfort of the all too familiar presence of Anastasia made it one of the few places she could almost feel like herself again. Being about as unhelpful as a person could be, AJ was watching Ana work, roaming around and picking up random things to inspect them out of sheer boredom.

"So, you're telling me that I should definitely take it home, put it on the kitchen table, and tell Mama Hughes that I got it out of the discount bin at the gallery for half price today," she hummed back, chuckling to herself at the idea. She would absolutely never. The last thing in the world that she would ever want was to make the Hughes family feel bad in any capacity. She did enough of that as it was without trying.

"It looks worse than it is." He said, as he opened the door to the bed and breakfast that was thirty years in disrepair. The local teenagers used to use it for a place to smoke, drink and do all the things that teenagers wanted to do but couldn't under the rules of their parents' roofs. The front stairs sagged in the middle. The bannister cracked in the middle. The railing to the front door -- nonexistent. The lawn was tidied, weeds gone ... there had been some progress in the old stately home that had once seen the rich and elite come through its doors while they came to stay by the water.

The work that remained would send a sane man running -- yet Anderius was less sane and more determined.

When he opened the door to let them in, the door stuck on the floor halfway into opening, and he had to bodily lift the door from where it hung off the hinges to get it over the hump as decades of laminate and poorly installed flooring had caused uneven wear and tear.

This place was not fit for human habitation ... even the rats and raccoons would avoid this place, and wisely so, yet tucked in the corner of the living room was an air mattress with a sheet covering it, a battery powered fan, a small camp stove, and a few cans of off-brand spaghetti-o's (not even the kind with meatballs).

"The place has good bones, and when I bought it -- the town said I had to restore it to its former glory." He set his hand on the wall that divided the hallway from the sitting room. The same wall that visibly bowed under his hand. "This wall is going - don't worry. It's not load bearing." Probably. He had his brother-in-law was on speed-dial for a reason.

Alejandra could think of nothing she wanted less than to have to go out and socialize with anyone around the island. She knew that the family she was staying with only meant to help her by sending her out on tasks around town, but she hated it. Since the accident, she wanted nothing more than to sit around and not see another person all day if she could help it. Some mixture of shame from the burns and scars from the accident and the mistrust she'd developed from her best friend bailing on her had left her completely unwilling to reintegrate herself back into society as a whole.

Unfortunately, she also found it completely impossible to say no when asked to help the two people that were putting themselves out there in every way to try and pull her through the hard times. That evening at least it was a simple request. Take a nice little baked banana bread over to the very kind man that was renovating the bed and breakfast.

Her eyebrows narrowed in distrust as Anderius led them towards the door, AJ not quite convinced that the whole building wasn't going to collapse on them the second she walked inside.

"I didn't realize when they asked me to bring you a banana bread that what they actually were saying was, oh, go walk through a death trap of a building," she huffed, almost under her breath as she watched the man work to get the door open. "This place is kind of a shit hole. Like, you see that, right?"

Looking around inside, AJ visibly cringed when she saw the makeshift little bed that was set up. Though she spent many a night up in the hayloft of the barn rather than in the bedroom she'd been given to stay in, even she wouldn't have stooped to this level. "You live here? How do you sleep through the night without worrying the whole fucking place is going to cave in on you?"

Get in and get out was the mantra that Alejandra had in her head as she popped inside to the Corner Cafe to nab something for breakfast. She hated going out, but her stomach had been grumbling and she wasn't about to actually make anything herself. Instead, she'd made the grueling bike ride in from the horse ranch to grab a few things for the day and then bike right back to where she came from. Being out and about during the day was still weird for her. The scars were more visible, for one, and the sun beating down on the still sensitive skin from her burns could still leave her blistered if she was out for long at all. Heading inside at a hurried pace, AJ put her order in and stood off to the side, not paying much attention to anything else. The only thing she did see a few moments later was a muffin brought up to the counter and someone else stepping forward to take it. Her name hadn't been called, but her instinct was to jump forward and claim the muffin as hers since, after all, she did have one in her order. "My fucking muffin, dude, what the hell?" she huffed out as Daphne walked up to claim it. Really, she'd already done enough to ruin the woman's day before, but that didn't give her any pause from jumping in again with an attitude.

Being that AJ didn't want to completely take advantage of the kindness of the family that had taken her in, she'd been doing her best to pitch in and help with the horse ranch as much as she could. She wasn't great at it. The horses didn't trust her and she certainly didn't trust them, but small tasks she could usually manage. That evening she was posted up at a spot on the beach, waiting on a couple that had rented a pair of horses for an evening horse ride to show up and retrieve the animals. It was a job even she could do - sit there and wait. Holding onto the reins, she felt like a total moron just standing there with the horses, standing far enough away from them that the couldn't bother her too much. The sound of footsteps brought a relieved sigh, AJ turning to what she had hoped would be the couple coming for the horses.

Instead, she was met with the sight of someone she'd never have expected to run into again, let alone on a beach on Marshall Island. Her eyes blinked for a moment, the memory of the woman bringing just a slight twinge of guilt over the way she'd just up and left without another word all those years ago. Preferring to accept no responsibility or give any apologies for what had happened, AJ went with the plan of just hoping Ferah didn't recognize her. "You uh - you here for the horses? For Fred and...Jill? You Jill?"

Making bad decisions wasn't a new thing for Alejandra, but the rate at which she found herself doing increasingly stupider things seemed to be getting worse with every passing day. The change of scenery moving from Detroit to the quieter life of Marshall Island was supposed to have been good for her, but a few weeks in she was already falling right back into the same patterns that had prompted the move from Detroit. Back behind the bar in town, AJ was leaning against the wall, cigarette hanging out of her mouth as she flipped through a wad of cash, shoving a stack of bills towards a guy that had promised he could get her something worth the money. Something strong, something to make her forget. The little baggie that was handed back over was barely given a glance before it was slipped into her jacket pocket, the man already departing the area. Though it was behind the building, it was hardly a discreet location, and her eyes flashed up to lock with a familiar face. "You follow me out here, Charles? Bump into me one more time and I'll swear you're stalking me." AJ didn't know how much Charlie had seen of the exchange, opting to play it off without mentioning what had just happened, hoping it would be her lucky day that he'd stepped out back just late enough to have missed the whole exchange.

"Something strong," Paloma could always oblige the request for something strong, even in the form of beer. Moving away from AJ, she went and grabbed a glass for the woman before reaching for a beer that she thought AJ would like and would hit the strong point in the terms of alcohol percentage. "Here you go," she set a napkin down before placing the glass atop of it. "you need a listening ear or just someone to drink with?" @ajaguirre

AJ didn't care much what was in the glass, she'd long since stopped being fussed over how a drink tasted. Now, it was all about how fast it could make her forget. How quickly it could take away the throb of pain that never left. Her head nodded an unspoken thanks as the beer was placed in front of her, the liquid drained quicker than it had been poured. "Just here to drink. Not a big talker," she answered back with a shrug. "Also a terrible listener. Makes for a terrible conversation." Once upon a time that had been different. She'd been far friendlier, more willing to chat and engage with people. Now, the effort of even just getting out of the house most days was enough. "You get to drink while you work?"

As he stays there, parked on the side of the road, he tilts his head so that his ear is facing towards the car. He wasn't sure if the hissing was growing louder or if it was just his newfound awareness screaming at him to listen to this woman and figure it out.

"How long do you think we have before it busts, do you think?" he asks.

He rubs the dashboard, as if he was giving it reassurance for whatever result was about to occur. Then, he grabs the door handle and opens the door ever-so-slightly, so he could get out.

"So you don't do this kind of thing? 'Cause, man, you'd be good at it. If you're running at people from across the road to flag them down, you know."

The question had Alejandra's lips twisting together in a grimace before offering a slight shrug in Eric's direction. "A few weeks if you're lucky. A few days if it's bad. A few hours if you drive like an ass." Based on just sound alone, it definitely wouldn't be long before the engine was done for.

Arms folding in front of her body, AJ's lips twitched a bit, the question hitting harder than she would have imagined. A no didn't feel truthful at all. This kind of thing was exactly what she did. It was who she was. Just not right now. Maybe never again.

"Nah, not really," she settled on as a response. Shifting away from the door of the car to tap at the hood insistently so he would open it up for her to look at. "It's just like, kind of obvious it's about to blow your engine."

AJ's familiar face was a comfort to Paloma - though many were. It wasn't that Paloma did not enjoy the tourist season on the island, the money made certainly made up for the chaos that often followed it. "I wish that I could do that," her lips thinned into a tight line, "I can't say Charlie would like that all too much," the brunette said in reference to the owner of the bar. "How about for second?" @ajaguirre

"Well, fuck Charlie, then," she sighed out with a resigned shrug of her shoulders. Now that she was more or less fully living on the island, even if it was just a few months in at that point, she considered it perfectly acceptable for her to complain about visitors invading what was now her space. Even if it was just temporary. "Beer. Or whatever. Something strong." AJ didn't care what it was, as long as it could get her drunk and dull some of the aching pain that seemingly wasn't ever going to leave her.

Eric zoomed ahead towards the Wave and Save in a haze. All the while, a mysterious hissing noise seemed to be coming from his vehicle. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a yellow outline of a light flickering. Then, right as he was about to turn into the Wave and Save parking lot, he noticed a woman charging towards his car. The sight of it made him hit the brakes and turn his head. His eyes were widened and he suddenly leaned back against the seat, as if he saw a cheetah coming at him from the middle of the road. Still, he rolled his windows down.

"You're gonna hurt yourself out here!" He hollered.

But her warning was enough to get him to tilt his head, squint his eyes, and keep his window down.

"It's not broken," He shrugged.

His eyes widened as it dawned on him. Finally, Eric sighed.

"Alright. How much is it gonna cost?"

The man wasn't wrong. Charging through a parking lot of all places was ill advised, but there was a fearlessness to Alejandra that kept her completely unperturbed by the possibility of something happening. As far as she was concerned, the worst had already happened. She gave a vague wave of her hand in response to his shout, staggered footsteps still moving her forward to the hood of his car.

"Not broken yet," she corrected before tapping a hand on the hood a few times to signal to the man to open it up.

She had a pretty confident explanation of the hissing noise in the car, but wanted to keep a look under the hood just to make sure. As someone who worked in the field for as long as she had, she knew how easily people could get taken advantage of at a shop if they didn't know what they were talking about. At least she could arm the guy with some information so he had less of a chance of getting fleeced.

"Let me take a look. I don't know what mechanics around here charge, but at least I can give you an estimate so you don't get fully fucked when you get it done," she offered.

The evening was busy as the tourism season was beginning to pick up more with the nicer weather that had come around in the last few weeks. Paloma had just served another customer, finding her way back down to the opposite end of the bar. "I am so sorry," Paloma paused, spotting someone new that was sitting at the bar, "I hope you haven't been waiting long." She lifted her hand, wiping the sweat from her brow line with the back of her hand. "What can I do for you?"

Despite the fact that she was more or less just as much of a tourist as any of the other visitors to the island, Alejandra found herself grumbling along with the best of the locals about how busy things were getting. Nothing made that sentiment more annoying than having to sit and wait at the bar to get served. There was always a small sense of relief when the person that came to serve her was a familiar face. AJ wasn't big on new people. Really, she was barely big on familiar people. "Well, for starters you can get rid of all the other people. What the fuck are they all doing here tonight?"

If it were up to Alejandra, she would find any possible reason to never leave the house at all, let alone to have to make a trip out around the people of the town. Navigating already posed its share of difficulties for her now that she exclusively walked or biked everywhere. Toss in the challenges of actually getting around with her bad hip and a simple trip to the store was a chore that left her winded, pissed off, and ready to fight the next person she saw. She was hobbling her way out of the store with a few grocery bags for the family she was living with when she heard a very familiar, very troubling sound. There weren't many things that AJ knew about, but cars was it for her. Just a few seconds of listening to an engine and she could diagnose a dozen problems just from a subtle tick or an off rhythm thud and whoever was pulling into the nearest parking space was lucky their car was even still running.

Every part of her was telling her to just fuck off and not bother. It wasn't her problem, she didn't know the guy, and therefore she didn't care about the guy. But, the flash of what could happen if his engine blew at the wrong time had her stop, groan loudly, and let herself hobble over towards his door.
