contemporary jazz is obviously a niche genre and likewise has a niche audience, but as a mostly non-consumer of contemporary jazz, esperanza spalding has successfully gotten me hooked.
i didn't grow particularly fond of the portland native’s last album, chamber music society, which won her the 2011 grammy for best new artist (over justin bieber- thank goodness!). don't get me wrong – it was definitely a beautifully produced album, showcasing spalding's insane musical talents and vocals that are to die for. but it didn’t grab me like her self-entitled 2008 album did with songs like "precious", "i know you know", and "ponte de areia".
but she came out with a more accessible album last january, radio music society. she aimed for more of a pop feel fused with her signature contemporary jazz sounds, and what a great accomplishment! her vocals, lyrics, and bass playing are, as always, beautiful to listen to. and q-tip, who produced the album, did such a great job infusing the right amount of pop r&b styles without jeopardizing the integrity of spalding’s undeniable jazz talents.
here are my favorites from the album. i implore you to take a listen, at least to these songs, in the case that spalding makes you too a believer in jazz, the genre born and perfected here in the u.s.

watched germaine last night, thanks to vanilla for the free ticket (i'm not a freeloader). the movie was much more light-hearted than i thought - from the trailer, i surmised that it would be a heavy, political commentary on the powers that be. but the dialogue was clever and funny, the acting superb but never too serious. there were serious moments, of course, as it's about a workers' strike and a young woman and her family's ability to cope with economic change. but jokes and laughs were interwoven throughout, which is what i loved about the film.
the film was presented by the consul general of belgium in los angeles at the aero theater in santa monica, preceding a belgian beer tasting (yum!!).

joshua tree and mount san jacinto
i have lived all my life in southern california, yet never had i or my immediately family truly explored the surrounding nature spots. i’ve never been to sycamore canyon, runyon canyon, or santa paula canyon, all of which are within short driving trips from oxnard. between ventura and la, there are tons of hiking trails and nature walks, and unfortunately, i can count how many i’ve been to in one hand. and all within just the last few years.
i say unfortunately because one should never live without nature as much as i have. if you appreciate true peace and quiet; if you appreciate true mindfulness; if you just appreciate the wonders nature has to offer, you should surround yourself with nature as often as you can. i always had the curiosity for it, just not the avenue to satisfy it.
but this weekend i finally went to my first-ever national park, joshua tree, and for the first time, took the revolving tram up to mount san jacinto. surrounded by blues, greens, browns, tans, blinding whites and with no city noise or dirt to pollute the air, my problems seemed insignificant. complaints i had during the week about work, money, just life in general, seemed to vanish midst the breathtaking rock formations at hidden valley, the trail through jumbo rocks, sunset at the cholla cactus garden, and resting at a rock atop mount san jacinto overlooking the desert. the next time i noisily complain and whine about some ultimately insignificant moment in my life, i promise myself to close my eyes and remember how it felt to be at peace with myself in the middle of joshua tree or on top of the world at mount san jacinto.
huge thanks to deuce, the coordinator of the entire trip, to whom i'm so grateful for keeping us well fed, well hydrated and well rested throughout the whole weekend. and if there ever is a nobel prize for packing, he'd the be the first one to get it. thanks to his fantastic packing skills, we had sweet strawberries, bananas, deliciously cold thin mints, plenty of water, and fresh oranges at our disposal. and he so sweetly brought layers and layers of jackets to keep a city girl like me warm in 45-degree weather (which i would've gotten used to given the chance). and just an enormous thanks for the great idea to go- it's definitely one of the best weekends i've ever had.
finally, i have only one photo to share of the whole trip. (the rest will come later once i’ve figured out why my FM2 won’t wind my film…) i can now only fantasize what it felt like when i first saw the view atop a rock and rested for what was too short a time. to experience it again, i won’t mind driving the 2 ½ hours to palm springs and taking the revolving tram up again to what is now, without a doubt, one of my favorite spots in the world- mount san jacinto.
congrats to my sis and future bro-in-law, again, for their blessings. they're getting married in october! i can't wait to be a part of all the festivities, starting with bridesmaid dress shopping in the garment district on march 17th preceding jenny's birthday on the 18th. (we're going paintballing... watch out guys, i have better aim than you think: these hands can do more than type.)
check out their cute wedding website complete with a suffocatingly cute selection of love songs.
burrard-lucas photography is a duo brother team who've innovated their own version of the beetlecam. one of their beetlecams was almost completely destroyed by just one lion, so they created a new prototype that would withstand the animals' strength.

Save The Dolphins of the Day: When 30 dolphins suddenly became stranded on a beach in the Brazilian city of Arraial do Cabo, beachgoers rushed to help and happily managed to save every last one.
Hooray for humans!
Perhaps now the dolphins will think twice before abandoning us to face the mindless bureaucracy of the Vogons.
