Documentation video for HUNGER.
Meat button test. It works, and it is grosssss. I cleaned up my work station really well and did my absolute best not to touch anything except what I needed to and only touched the makey makey with clean fingers. (notice I use my non meat touching finger to poke to off button). I plan to provide anti bacterial wipes and hand sanitizer, as well as have signage as a warning and all that jazz. Yep.

HOST SOUNDS ON SOUNDCLOUD
Iāve decided to do something spontaneous and crazy to make my simple interface pretty.
Iāve decided to use the meat as an āattackā button, as well as build a fun touch-based controller with makey makey (no longer using isadora except to test my controller).
Making a working, separateĀ āattackā button has been tricky to figure out, but I may have found a work around, and simply use the design of my interface to trick the user into thinking that it is a separate button, when in fact it is the same asĀ āclickā. This is achieved by simply splitting the makey makey connection so that it has two input sources instead of one.Ā
During the MaKey MaKey Build Night at Boise State University's Albertsons Library, a number of attendees commented that it would be nice to have both hands free, rather than needing one to hold onto the ground cable. Attendee and student, Scott Schmader, developed this handy hands-free solution!Supplies: MaKey MaKey kit Duct Tape Aluminum Tape Masking Tape Scissors

HUNGER game
HUNGER is a choose-your-own-adventure, text-based game in which you play a person who is experiencing an intense, insatiable hunger. As the game progresses, you discover that the only thing that quenches your hunger and thirst is flesh and blood.
HUNGER mixes horror and humor to lead you through a night of morally questionable choices, often including murder and cannibalism. In addition to that, these choices are prompted by objects that must be interacted with to further yourself in the story. This includes a slab of torn latex flesh that must be roughly touched, a slab of steak (probably not real), and a latex ear that will listen to you for loud growls or howls.
The interactive objects will be activated with tactile transducers connected via makey makey. These will feed into an isadora patch, which will trigger sound effects.
My biggest inspiration has been the game designer Porpentine, who has created games such as With Those We Love Alive, a twine game, and Bellular Hexatosis. From what I know, most of her games are available to play for free or pay what you want.
I am also inspired by sandbox styled games like Fallout 3, which implements a system of judging the morality of your actions within the game, was well as traditional choose your own adventure books.
Exhibition needs include a somewhat secluded space so that sound and image can come across without being too loud and disruptive to others. Also, I would preferably exhibit this game in a dark space to help with the mood.
Timeline:
- correct spelling and republish game over break
- collect interactive objects (flesh pieces) over break
- collect sound effects over break
- Remaining time will be spent programming the isadora and makey makey actions.
- Sounds triggered by touch and sound via tactile transducers
An example of a playthrough of HUNGER.
The first draft of my game on Twine. There are quite a few typos, and Iād like to expand it if I could, but I need to shift my focus now to:
A: Correcting existing typos and republish.
B: Begin construction and program for isadora/makey makey.
Extra Credit: Analog to Digital
For my extra credit assignment, I attempted to recreate Steina and Woody VasulkaāsĀ NoisefieldsĀ (1974), and more specifically, the tool they used, called a Video Sequencer.Ā
According to the website fondation-langlois, a video sequencer ā...allows the programmer to separate two video sources in a determined sequence. It controls, among other things, the alternation of the points of view of two cameras in real time on the same monitor. The sequence is controlled according to various parameters: the rhythm of the regular sweeping of the screen, sound pulsation, etc.ā
The video sequencer I created could manipulate two channels of video in two ways: first, by adjusting and manipulating the rate at which the images pulsated, not only between beingĀ āonā andĀ āoffā, but also wether or not the Colorizer actor would colorize the black and white footage to color, or leave it unchanged. Second, the sequencer could manipulate the hue of the colorizer via a Mouse Watcher actor, which was set to manipulate the red and green channels of the colorizer based on the position of the mouse on the screen.
Instead of using existing video files to manipulate, I decided to try and build this completely from scratch within Isadora. In doing this, I created the noise with a noise generator, then zoomed in and manipulated the dimensions so that it more closely resembled the static in the original piece. Then, I created a shape and keyed out the inside so that the background layer of static could be seen. I applied the Colorizer, and then added the Displace actor to give the slight effect of the image misregistering, as it looks to be doing in the original piece. I then used a pulse generator and connected it to triggers and trigger delays to make the image flicker, by turning the projector on and off. I applied this same trigger arrangement to the colorizer, which fluctuated the image between black and white and color.
To create the outer layer of noise, I did the same thing except alternated the trigger of the projector so the the foreground and background would alternate. I attempted to have the images flicker at a much higher rate, but unfortunately Isadora would freeze up or stutter, so I decided to lower the flicker rate so that you could still tell what it was doing without overloading the program.
The documentation video will be uploaded in full in a bit.
Just finished playing @porpentineās game With Those We Love Alive. Here are my sigils, and my guts hurt. Such a gorgeous and powerfully moving game. Many moments hit a bit too close to home, but that made it a very unique experience.
Iād say this is super fun research into how twine works, but a lot of the games I have found are incredibly personal and mentally challenging, usually because of their duration and monotony. (Not that theyāre boring-- on the contrary, they are incredibly interesting, but because of Twineās text based format it can get a little grating reading similar things over and over again). So it is fun, but it is still challenging, and playing this particular game was hard on my heart. The themes common in twine games is perfectly in line with some of my ideas, though, so I still think it will be an appropriate format for my project.
You can play the game here.

This is challenging, but satisfying. Iām excited to get a finished story, and then use makey makey and isadora to react off of events in the story and to provide objects. Oh booooy! (I donāt think this will be the story for my final, but maybe!) Right now Iām just trying to figure it out. I also want to learn more about possibly portland artists who use twine, etc. More research needs to happen soon.
CSS is hard. ugh.

Okay, yeah, Twine sounds SO FREAKIN COOL and I DEFINITELY want to jump into it and make something. Iām still trying to brainstorm at how I could use external props to assist with in game things, I can probably figure it out with makey makey... that would be pretty interesting, to have a text based choose your own adventure game and then have physical objects to manipulate on occasion. Hmm... gotta think about this some more.
