2. I think this question is very interesting. We see it get debated a lot in the art community, and it's a valid question to ask. I think that despite how old this question gets, we'll always see it being asked. A lot of people might see a lot of modern art being made and dismiss it as being easy or something they could do. Then the question is, why didn't you? If it was so easy to make, what stopped you? If it leaves a lasting impression on you to repeat that it is not art, doesn't that make it art in the first place? Doesn't it fulfill its purpose to start a conversation? In my opinion, it does.

1. Final Proposal

Since our sentence is “A Devastating Purge Endangers our Future”, we choose to interpret it to raise awareness towards endangered animals. We plan to create necklaces with lettered beads spelling out “A Devastating Purge Endangers our Future”, or its acronym ' 'A.D.P.E.O.F', along with a laminated QR. Once scanned, the QR code will lead the viewer to a website that has 5 different buttons. This buttons, depending on which one is clicked, will lead the person to a website about an endangered animal. There will be information about 5 animals in total. We plan on creating ~100 necklaces in total and handing them out to as many people as possible at the Zoo or a Park.

1. Final Documentation

For our project, we made around 75 necklaces and bracelets with our sentence's acronym. After we finished making them, we went to Tropical Park to give them out. Going up to people, we marketed it as an art project. We would tell people the jewelry was free, the only cost was their attention. We made some flyers (around 10) to show to people so they could scan a qr code to lead to our landing website. There, people can pick which animal they want to learn about and see resources. I considered this project successful. No one turned down our necklaces, and people seemed genuinely interested in learning about animals. We had a lot of fun moments, and while some people needed a little convincing to pick a necklace/bracelet after scanning the qr code, we got a good amount of people to see it, and only had a few necklaces left over.

One of our ideas for our project is to have a public display in a bookstore or library. The idea is to spell out our sentence, using books, folding the pages to spell out the words + letters. At first, i thought maybe we could cut the sentence into the books, but it seems like a waste of a book, so I believe folding the pages is more sustainable.Since our sentence can be interpreted in many different ways and contexts, I decided to interpret the sentence in an environmental context. I believe that the necklace could catch people's attention, especially if many of these necklaces are made and worn by others. These necklaces would also feature a unique endangered animal charm and our sentence. We also had the idea of building multiple bird houses with our sentence carved into it and hanging them on trees around campus to show awareness for the decline of nature around us. The emergency broadcast is supposed to represent the urgency of the times around us.

1. PRESENT

Our sentence we chose is “A devastating purge endangers our fairness”. After some discussion, we decided to change fairness to future. My specific word was purge, which I obtained from an article about the recent immigration crisis. The way I interpreted the sentence was that the devastating mass immigration, or ‘purge’, of people out of the United States affects our individual rights and liberties. My other group partners have similar ideas along the lines of Ai and the destruction of nature. We made the lettering out of sticks and spelled them out on the nature preserve. We made a video recording us chanting the sentence, and another of us destroying it to splice together.

For my project, I focused on the emotion Nostalgia. I really wanted to focus on the longing i feel to return to simpler times. For the longest time, I felt like the older I got, I had to hide the silly interests I had in order to 'grow up'. I felt like i had to leave behind my love of art and media in order to pursue a 'serious' career.

I used vines to cover the corkboard and added little googly eyes to add a sort of whimsy to them? i also was obsessed with googly eyes when i was a kid, and i would put them EVERYWHERE. I added stickers and pins and little drawings of all the things that inspired me to start loving art in the first place, along with the family and friends, and inspire me every day.

I added the notes that say "We're Fated to Pretend," which are lyrics from the song "Time to Pretend" by MGMT. I was obsessed with that song when I was a kid, and I feel like the message and the lyrics fit the theme i was trying to convey. As we grow up, we miss the simpler times from when we were kids, and we often push down a lot of the interests we had when we were kids.

For my project, I want to include pictures of people important to me, along with my interests over the years.

I wanted my project to represent nostalgia and the longing you (well me) feel to return to simpler times.
