Tumblr, darlings—let’s tip our (metaphorical) hats to my favourite summer stunner: a scene-stealing wide-brimmed cocoa-brown straw number, discovered at the 2019 village fayre between homemade jam and the WI tombola. Its softly structured crown, banded with a striped ribbon — muted gold, cream, taupe— finished with a vintagey buckle, positively whispers Riviera glamour and English country garden chic. I’ve paired it with linen culottes for the flower show, a floaty frock for choir rehearsals, and many times, most memorably, with nothing but a bold grin and SPF 30 for my blog. At 65, is parading about in just a hat wisdom or folly? Depends on your view of sunburn and scandal, I suppose. Let’s call it living deliciously on the edge of the parish newsletter.

June’s arrived, and so has the rain—my hair’s a frizzy halo as I queue at the post office, pondering whether a Lady Bee digital book, complete with cheeky photographs, would cause a stir.
