In July of 2017, I divulged my first book on Facebook. I can’t really think of a more public statement than that.Â
The post and the book are written in my mother tongue, Portuguese, and they are available for all friends, family, and strangers to see.

Mastery Journal: Multimedia Adaptation
"The Policeman and the Actor" is a story about a gay couple that comes from very different economic backgrounds but tries to make it work. At the end of the story, Adam and Thomas realize their love for each other counts more than any material gain could ever count. This twist on "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry tries to modernize the tale without changing its core message. A same-sex couple struggling because of different backgrounds gives the story a hint of modern times it could use.
I believe this is the way to go with adaptations of classics. The message should stay intact while the rest of the tale should be updated. A classic tale got its notoriety for its universal relatability. When changing the details to make the story even more relatable to modern audiences, the adaptation is successful.
My experience writing "The Policeman and the Actor" was great. One of my passions as a reader is to watch adaptations of my favorite book series. I already had a habit of analyzing the differences between TV shows and movies in relation to their source material.
Learning about it and working on my own adaptation has been the next step I needed to take in my path to becoming a screenwriter. I believe I have now better tools to approach the process of adapting and what to focus when doing so. This is something I'm looking forward to doing, both as a screenwriter and an author of books.

DISCUSSION: Gamification and Media Convergence
My three examples of Gamification and/or Media Convergence are:
Everyday life is an RPG
My friends and I are avid players of RPG. Ever since we've started playing, ordinary accomplishments have been "transformed" in good rolls of dice, just like in an RPG. If someone comes up with a brilliant idea for the weekend plans, he or she will have "rolled well in INT (intelligence)." If we are in a party and a friend starts flirting with a stranger, he or she "rolled well CHA" (charisma), and so on.Â
Small, everyday things are referred to as accomplishments in an RPG mindset. To me, that is the perfect example of gamification.
Memes
Social media would be nothing without memes. Images or GIFs with a few lines of text can universally transmit an idea, and everyone takes advantage of it. To me, that exemplifies Media Convergence. A written conversation is enrichened with images to transmit an idea.Â
Using memes has become the official language of communicating online in informal situations. It has gotten to a point where people use memes even outside of the online environment; either mimicking or saying the meme.
VR Technology
Intel announced a partnership with Paramount Pictures during CES, January 2018, in which they intended to use volumetric video technology in movies. This technology has been used to record virtual reality sports matches, in which the audience feels like they are in the field with the players.
To me, this reads as Gamification. First of the matches that were recorded and, second, of the movies shot with this technology. The audience will be able to experience the movie as a character, much like a video-game.
Effective Branding Examples
Here are the three examples of effective branding I have selected for this assignment. They are all websites of known novel writers. Each example reflects the author and not his or her most famous work, despite the fact that some of these authors could have easily relied on a very successful brand and leave it at that.Â
Instead, the websites are about them as writers and not their books. Because of that, I believe the branding was very effective.Â
Author Daniel Handler’s website
Daniel Handler might be primarily known for writing the children’s book series A Series of Unfortunate Events under the name of Lemony Snicket. However, those are not the only books he’s written. Instead of focusing on his career as a children book’s author, Handler has a website that has his signature dry humor and the paradox of being very clean-looking website while showing a messy image to allude to writing. This way, Handler kept his essence as a writer.Â
Author Brandon Sanderson’s website
As a versatile novel writer, Brandon Sanderson elected a fantasy vibe to his website. That is very much in line with his extensive body of work, which usually revolves around magic and Fantasy. As an author known for writing a lot of different book series, Sanderson has an interesting feature on his website: a bar that says how close he is to complete his most recent work. This way he can connect with his readers and promote his own work at the same time.
Author J. K. Rowling’s website
Known for the Harry Potter series, Rowling’s website focus on her instead of any allusions to magic or children’s books. Rowling is active on Twitter, so the use of her profile was a clever hint to that. Her signature and the handwritten notes are also symbols of Rowling and her method. The colors also point out to a mature and feminine woman, who is exactly how she presents herself to be.Â
Mastery Journal Assignment - ESW
Ever since I have started writing, I have always written novels or short stories. It is easy for me to get inside the head of my characters, to think as they would. That is what I have been doing for over ten years. Their inner conflicts and triumphs are the subjects about what I write.
The shift from this kind of writing to writing for a screen is a big step to me. Now, I have to show whom my characters are, instead of spelling it out for the reader. This can only be accomplished through actions and not thoughts or feelings. In the limited time of a TV show, the challenge is to merge plot and character development and bring it to life through visual action. It is to use the serial or episodic structure to show a story, not tell it.
In my (admittedly) short experience, doing so is even harder in web series. With less time comes the need to exclude complex storylines. There is no place for a B-Story, which usually allows the writer to explore things unrelated to the main plot. That notion frankly scared me at first.
However, just as the format restrains complexity, it allows for freedom in other aspects. Simpler storylines allow the characters’ personalities to shine. You can only tell a compelling story in 6 minutes or less if the protagonists of that story are quickly captivating. The problems they face might be simple in structure. That does not mean they will be easy to solve.
Now that this month is almost over, I believe I have learned valuable lessons. My dream has always been to be a professional writer; of books or TV shows. Hopefully, both. I am not sure if I want to write for web series but I am sure it was a great place to start.
I have applied to this MFA as a door to the Entertainment Business. Every class I have had so far proves I was right to do so. Once I have all the intellectual tools to work as a screenwriter, I intend to use Full Sail’s connections in the market to get myself an internship or entry job. It is not my dream to create a show of my own. I do not feel ready as of yet. Instead, I would be ecstatic to learn from more experienced writers and producers and to help create new storylines for established characters.
In time, I believe I will have both the knowledge and experiences to come up with my own stories and worlds.
My Creative Writing Idea #3: Structure and organize the legal part of environmental licensing studies using storytelling tools to make it more easily understandable to the casual reader.Â
As a lawyer, it is my job to make myself understood. Therefore, I can apply my knowledge of structuring text and of adapting my vocabulary to an audience to make my legal writing better.
My Creative Writing Idea #2: Write articles about shows I watch detailing overall premises and themes, and their execution.
This is an illustration that refers to Freeform’s Shadowhunters, a show I am currently reviewing. This show is very plot-driven, which, in turn, provides me with an excellent opportunity to study premises and themes, as well as how to explore them.Â
My Creative Writing Idea #1: Write articles about shows I watch detailing character journeys and their execution.
I’ve chosen this edit of the characters of The 100. Not only this is a show whose character’s development is very much in tune with what I would like to write, their journeys are what drives the plot of the show as whole.
