Snake Slayer

An engraved Bond Arms Snake Slayer derringer with two sets of barrels; one in .45 LC & .410, the other in .357 Magnum. According to the owner/seller, the engraving work was done by Tony Lee Frost, a well known engraver for knives and firearms. Although a derringer is generally in the $400 or less range, the spare barrel and the professional engraving helped to snag a final selling price of $1,525.00. (GRH)

It had been years since the property had been inhabited - since the sound of gunfire ripped through the cold, northern air and echoed off the surrounding mountains. At one time, a gunsmith and his family lived in the homestead built unobtrusively into the thick pines overlooking the valley below. The property was easy to miss, and easier to forget. 

Nature had just begun to reclaim the property when an unexpected group of people appeared. As time progressed, more and more showed up, replacing the gunfire with the sound of hammers and felled trees. No more did vines climb the once-well tended to lodge, nor did the frosted winds invade the library through the broken window. Warmth had been restored to the hearth and voices filled the air.

Curious.

That was the word that could be used to describe the glint in the reflective eyes watching the coming and going of the new inhabitants. What ever did happen to the arms dealer?

Each night, beneath the waning moon, the creature crept ever closer to the property. From wagon to the restored lodge to the new home being built on the edge of the lake, it watched. With the surrounding forest, the reflective eyes were easy enough to blame on local fauna.

Soon enough.

The creature would reveal itself soon enough.
