HOPE OF THE PHILIPPINE HERITAGE
The Filipino history is taught to us through literature, from books we read and pictures we see. But is it enough for us to grasp the depth of its origin, its value and its reason? There is a saying that the best teacher is experience well reflected on. If the history, traditions and culture are experienced only through letters and images, can we reflect on those very well? Is that enough to learn and continue what was once existing and living?
Today, Philippine heritage is in danger. Moreover, its existence may come to its end. This heritage, the tangible and intangible heritage is directly connected to each other that when one is lost, the other will eventually disappear. The physical heritage, the natural and man-made are slowly deteriorating due to the people’s actions and intentions. But isn’t it because of that the intangible heritage, the principles, beliefs, and culture which are also deteriorating which lowers the overall values of the country? If the tangible things that symbolizes the identity of Filipinos are destroyed, what would be a reference? To where will we see and believe?
Many are already destroyed and most are kept unprotected but there are only few who are concerned and are taking action to preserve the rich culture of this country. Heritage is one of the foundation of one’s culture and is the road to development. But if the heritage is lost, what will happen to our culture and most especially to our development?
There’s a saying from Jose Rizal and I quote “Ang di marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay mas masangsang pa sa bulok na isda.” And is it evident? Because for me it’s a yes, if we continue to be a catalyst for its destruction.
But only few can grasp this. But I believe there’s still a hope. It only takes a spark to get a fire going. And that spark will start with a small population of nation builders, the future architects.
Therefore, we must be united and start now, before it’s too late.
