Dean: but thanx anyway arden
Dean: ur the bro
Arden: You're probably right. No offence, of course! They're just very particular.
Arden: Thank you! At least, I hope that's a compliment.

Hugo: uh yea?
Arden: Awesome! They're my favorite. Sandwiches it is! I'm super proud of you, Hugo! :)
Hey, at least he brightened up the expression on her face. That counted for something, right? Blinking in surprise, it took him a moment to remember how to speak words that didn’t crackle out of his throat like he was in seventh grade. “You, uh– I mean, s-sure, if that’s what you.. If that’s what you want and stuff, then yeah. Yeah, we could.. do that. And stuff.”
“Okay!” she chirped. “I know this great place that also sells sandwiches-- way better than Subway. They always get my order wrong.” She rolled her eyes; she really needed to report him to the manager. “When are you free? I have a pretty hectic schedule, but I’m sure I could make some time.”
Hallie liked to be the one to keep energy levels up during late night shifts. Her fellow employees were always super quick to get bored. But tonight, even she was finding it hard to light that optimistic spark. Not only was it a Friday, but the store was less than dead, and it had been overrun by tediousness. Hanging lazily around one of the stands near the counter, she attempted to make herself look like she was doing something halfway useful. Admittedly, she didn’t mind talking to Jerry. Once you got past the bald patch and the smell, he was a super nice guy. Saying that, she’d much rather talk to Arden. Saying that, she wasn’t sure she wanted to talk in French. “Yeah, totally! I mean, we’re always working together.” She gave a wide smile, absent-mindedly rearranging a stand of sunglasses. “How’re you doing, Madame President?”
Arden rocked on her heels, wondering how Hallie still looked like an angel while wearing her Target shirt and khakis. Maybe the gingers-shouldn’t-wear-red thing was a myth. “I’m well,” she replied. “Bored, obviously. This place is dead.” Brown eyes scanned over the array of sunglasses until she came across a particular pair, and she snorted, reaching out to pluck them from their place. They were green with tiny pineapples all across the frame.
“Who would actually wear these?” she asked, putting them on. “You know, anywhere but a luau.” She struck a pose before pulling them off and looking at the price. “Jesus! Ten dollars? These honestly look like they came out of some kid’s party favor bag.”
An amused scoff left her lips. She wasn’t wrong. Clark had an uncanny ability to be a pain in the ass– she probably knew this the best. “When you have enough friends you can pretty much do whatever you put your mind to,” She shrugged, deciding not to point out the hesitation in the other’s voice. “So, I’m not really that surprised. I’m pretty sure a good chunk of the student body voted for him as a joke, too,” She chuckled, shaking her head. “I can try getting him to take it a little more seriously, if you want. No promises.”
“Trust me,” Arden said, eyebrows raising. “It’s useless. No amount of threats or pep talks could get that boy to do anything useful. I even quoted Patrick Henry-- nothing!” She scoffed in disbelief; that man had persuaded everyone to fight against England, but he couldn’t get a high school boy to file some papers. “Hugo’s surprisingly good at handling the money, but he keeps suggesting more vending machines. Like Michelle Obama would ever allow that.” She pulled a packet of cheese crackers out of her bag and began opening it. “Do you have any suggestions for school improvements?”
She couldn’t help but chuckle at the imitation, hunching over in preparation for her own. “And to think that’s all people remember him by now– don’t they know he was never proved guilty? All hocus pocus, I’ll tell you that,” She said, voice lowered significantly and hand raised to stroke a mustache that wasn’t there. “It’s no biggie– it’s not like anyone likes him anyway,” She rolled her eyes, waving a hand dismissively. “How are your presidential duties going?”
Arden snickered at Ingrid’s own imitation of Willard; it was nice to let her guard down around someone. “They’re fine,” she remarked, moving to shuffle through her purse, not really looking for anything in particular. “Except Clark is a pain in the butt, but what’s new? I cannot believe--” She cut herself off, realizing she hadn’t actually mentioned that key piece of information to Ingrid yet. “...that he got elected.” Hopefully she hadn’t noticed her hesitation.
Felix noted the mild disgust on Arden’s face, wondering why she even bothered coming around the workout room is she couldn’t handle the stink. He was also wondering why she was asking him all of these questions. “I’m not the team captain, you know. You should probably be trying to organize this stuff with him. But I’m totally into the idea of pizza lunches.”
Arden nodded, but immediately had a countering argument. “I get that, but I think I should be hearing it from the whole team, not just the captain. That’s what democracy is all about, right?”
Surprised, he glanced down at his shoes with a look of bemusement: Tattered, faded red converse with frayed, untied shoelaces. Probably not his best look. “Uh…. Thanks..?” Was she being sarcastic? “I..like yours, too?”
Arden looked down at her flats, lips curling into a bright grin. “Thank you, Ira! Hey, why don’t we grab coffee some time and discuss costumes?”

Hugo: thanks!! seriously though i owe it all to you :)
Hugo: uhh i dunno
Hugo: we could, uh, grab lunch or something
Arden: That sounds excellent! Do you like sandwiches?
“Um - yeah, sorry that your… cat died?” Matt really wasn’t listening to the conversation at hand.
Arden furrowed her eyebrows, shaking her head. “…No, Matt. I can’t figure out what to be for Halloween.”

Hugo: i got an a!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hugo: all thanks to you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arden: Seriously? That's so awesome, Hugo! I'm so happy for you! 😄
Arden: How shall we celebrate? 🎉😊
Realising himself a moment too late, Ira immediately takes a step away from the other and bows his head, cheeks burning bright red. Er– S-Sorry. I, uh.. I didn’t mean to, like.. P-Private things. Didn’t mean to pry into those. That’s– What I didn’t mean to do. Sorry.
“Oh, it’s fine!” Arden dismissed, noting the redness in the boy’s cheeks. She had a sneaking suspicion that he was somewhat afraid of her, and that was the last thing she wanted-- he seemed so nice. “I... like your shoes!”
His chest heaved with a sigh. Classic Arden. “Yeah, okay,” He said, not really in the mood to deal with her attitude. It was one of those days where it was hard to pretend like there wasn’t a lot going on. “Whatever.”
Arden sighed deeply, letting her weight rest on her heels once more. “Thank you,” she muttered. Sure, it was a little irritating-- okay, a lot irritating-- that he was acting like she hadn’t just given him the better side of their deal, but she didn’t have the energy to continue arguing with him.
