She is not supposed to be alone. She had left home with the guards necessary for a princess, but something had spooked even the most well-trained of their horses, and in the din there had been separation. Every movement now was to return to them and the protection of their loyalty to her father, the protection of their swords and well-trained arms. And yet it is a stranger she finds, a stranger who seems to know where she is, though she had thought herself as silent and hidden as a little mouse.

His words are strange, the accent she cannot place, and yet with palms raised and expression earnest, she does not doubt his sincerity. And so she steps forward, into the light, pushing tree-branches from her path with her hand.

“It was Elvish, those words you spoke,” she said. “Was it not?”

A strange version of it, no language she could pinpoint, and yet Elvish in its sounding all the same.

“I apologize for coming upon you so - - I have been separated from my company, though I am sure they are nearby. I did not wish to meet any danger on the open path.”

It never ceased to amaze him, the grace with which the people of the wood move. If not for his sixth sense -and Saphira’s warning- he would never have known she was there. Even knowing his was almost surprised to see her step free of the trees; she practically seemed to form directly from them. As she appeared, he gave a slight bow of greeting, resting the fingers of one hand comfortably on the hilt of the sword at his belt and touching the fingers of his other gently to his lips in the gesture of truth he had become accustomed to using. Her question brought a quiet smile. « It was, though it comes not from this land. » If the encounters he had stumbled upon thus far were any indication, the languange he knew and the language of elvish people in this land stemmed from similar history. « There is no need to apologize. Caution is rarely a foolish decision. I must admit, however, » he takes a short pause to examine their surroundings, « these hardly seem dangerous roads. Do you know something I do not? » There is a slight joke to his words, a smile hidden in the syllables. He speaks humor with the ease of a kind soul.

AH, BUT WHAT COULD BRING such a thing into being?? this was no feat of a spell he could sense, nor did anything except the inherent shock send a shiver r i p p l i n g down his spine. if it was a DARK trick, then it was a well-hidden one, concealed beneath layers of the benign. his mirror performed the acts of life in the same manner as he, even to the barely-audible pattern of their BREATH.

‘ you speak true, though now i believe you must be something DIFFERENT entirely. ’

the TORRENT within his skull was reflected upon the other’s face, ( and likely his own ) a better proof of his validity than words spoken in any tongue except the ancient language. it nearly dragged forth a s m i l e.

‘ i know not. ’

c a r e f u l fingers extended, spanning half the distance between them before he paused. hesitancy would not be amiss, yet he craved some way to know for CERTAIN what this could be.

A troubling thought came to him then; if this was an event devoid of trickery, and the other was truly him (though not?) then was there also an echo of his heart of hearts? Did there lurk nearby a version of Saphira whom he did not know? He had not been so concerned until then. The imagining of her reaction to thinking she had been doubled was equally as disturbing as the concept of any moment in which he did not know her. It was this that prompted him to wall off the confines of his thoughts. « Something different. » he echoed thoughtfully. The how was clearly not to be answered, and in many ways it didn’t bother him, for there were always and would always be things that came to be beyond his level of understanding. The why, however, continued to plague the rider, creeping around the edge of his mind: in fact, it was such a preoccupying thought, it became a large backing force to his defense. Why why why?

He stepped back, shying from the touch like a horse from flame, and a certain kind of severity came into his look. He understood the compulsion, but « Perhaps we should not . . »
