Experiencing a lot of guilt about not posting on my SB Official account at all over the last month. Hyperfixation went away (for now) but I’m sure it will be back. It always comes back. I’m sorry all of yall who are disappointed! I promise I’m beating myself up over it all the time.

"So you're Ashley,"

Ryan smirks as he floats upside down, looking at the woman Spider-Man style. How did he get into the White House? Who knows?

Ryan was trying to get a lay of the land on what had changed since he went off-grid....again. He knows that several things have changed, many new faces, and people he knew are doing new things.

"I've heard many things about you. Well...more like I've heard many supes screaming AT you. But look at you now! Vice President! That's cool!"

“Oh!” Ashley startles slightly, but recovers very professionally. She seems genuinely surprised but also happy to see Ryan. “Ryan! Wow, you got so big!”

She laughs slightly, a genuine spark behind her smile that isn’t present when talking to most people in this office.

“Thank you! It’s a big accomplishment. Especially given the last time you saw me I was a glorified assistant, and I wish I could say that I earned it all by myself but,” her smile turns a bit sad before she recovers back into a bit more of a plastic smile. “shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, right?”

“Anything I can do for you while you’re here? I know the presidents lounge has a pretty sick tv with a state of the art gaming system…” she grins, clearly trying to entice him with the offer. Not in a malicious way just clearly trying to connect with him using the only thing she remembers him genuinely enjoying when he was living at the tower.

Ryan laughs, "Maybe in a little bit," he smiles, flipping himself right side up.

He floats down so he's sitting criss-cross in the air a little before Ashley's desk.

"I'm going around and checking in, seeing what everyone has been doing while I was gone," he smiles softly at the woman, "I am really glad you're doing better. I always hated how you were treated in the tower. I'm sorry I never spoke up about it, I didn't know how,"

"Maybe I should be the one asking if there is anything I can do for you,"

She gets a slightly complicated look on her face, still smiling but her brows furrow, not confused but close to it.

“Ryan, you were just a kid getting used to a a fucked up world you’d never lived in before. You still are. You don’t have to apologize.” She slides a small dish of candies that sits on her desk towards him. “Though it is a little refreshing to hear that someone else noticed.”

“There have been a few Uhm… developments since you took your leave of absence.” She says, giving him a look that shows she definitely is only using a lighter term in case of prying ears.

“Nothing too scary I promise! Uhm… I have powers now so that’s… fun!”

Ryan quickly gets the memo, narrowing his eyes, he scans the room before finding a bug. Letting his feet hit the floor, he walks over to the plant it's hiding behind.

"Here," he smashes it with his hand, "I want to talk with you freely, I don't want anyone to feel like they need to hide from me,"

For good measure, he walks over to a radio and turns it on just high enough that it doesn't bother him but drowns out their conversation from any bugs he can't see.

Turning back to Ashley, he smiles, "There! That should buy us some time. One benefit of being John's son is that people tend to let me do my own thing," he shrugs, "'shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, right?'" he muses, parting back Ashley's earlier words, "I have also heard rumor of your powers. You're like a James and Voldemort fusion, right?"

“All things have their upsides I suppose. Homelander’s reputation helps and hinders both of us that way.” Her shoulders relax slightly when he turns up the radio and she gives a soft chuckle, “Yeah, I’d say that’s pretty apt comparison. Say hi Ashley.”

“Hi Ashley.” Back Ashley chimes in verbally, muffled from under the wig.

“She’s the mind reader not me.” She huffs a small laugh. “Mr Norrington doesn’t need a sentient tumour to read people for him, but we do have coffee scheduled later so I suppose it’s similar enough that we can relate.”

“That and you have similar… tendencies.” Back Ashley chimes in again.

“Ashley! He’s a kid, time and place!”

Ashley’s eyes widen before her face settles into restrained intrigue. Her mouth slowly lifts into a smirk, one brow raised. She isn’t going to ask. She doesn’t need to because seconds later BAshley pipes up with:

Oh my god it’s for Homelander!! It’s Homelander! Ashley he’s looking to-

“Shut up Ashley!” She whispers aside harshly before looking back at James with a flat and annoyed look. “She’s a fucking idiot I’m sorry.”

She steps around her desk to pull out a drawer and rifle through it, finding the small card she was looking for with a little ‘aha!’.

She presents the card to James with a small smile, “This is a connection I have through Tek Knight, made by supers for supers. They are very discrete, don’t judge, and you can call them directly instead of ordering online.”

She has the decency not to pry, despite Back Ashley’s earlier comment, lord knows she has probably done far worse. But there is a genuine smile on her face, human in a way she rarely lets herself be. She’s being genuinely kind, this isn’t some ploy for favour or backhanded way of keeping people under her thumb. Just kind.

“What you do in private is none of my business or anyone else’s, Mr Norrington. I promise to keep it that way.”

James chuckled to himself, not responding to Back Ashley, and accepted the card with careful fingers, as though it were something far more valuable than a simple contact slip. He glanced at it once, then lifted his eyes back to Ashley, the smallest of genuine smiles touching his mouth.

“Thank you, Ms Barrett.”

He understood the offer for what it was: no leverage, no transaction hidden beneath the courtesy, simply a kindness extended without claws behind it.

That, perhaps, made it rarer than any favor bought with money.

His expression softened a fraction more as he tucked the card away.

“Ashley.”

The way he said her name this time lacked the usual professional distance. Softer. More familiar.

“You have been very helpful, indeed.”

A brief pause followed before he continued, tone quieter now, almost thoughtful. “perhaps we might share a cup of refreshments and a conversation sometime. Telepath to telepath.”

One brow lifted slightly.

“I suspect very few people understand the particular exhaustion of constantly hearing far more than one wishes to. And truthfully,” James admitted after the smallest hesitation, “I would not mind having a someone to confide in within this tower.”

Tell me about it. Back Ashley pipes up, sounding exhausted but a clear smile in her voice.

Ashley smiles and huffs a small laugh, “I’m very lucky that I have her to filter most of it out.”

She leans back against her desk, sitting on the edge and giving him a kind look. She knows that camaraderie isn’t a very common thing for James.

“But, refreshments and a chat sounds lovely, James. I agree, I- we are probably one of the few people capable of understanding the tiring business of hearing far too much and far too little all at once.”

She gets almost a sheepish look, arms crossing a bit, “I never ever admitted to this if someone asks but no one wants to be friends with the boss so friends are… difficult to find. Someone to confide in sounds nice.”

A brilliant idea, Mr Norrington. I’ve had Jadie on it for months now. Luthor is a misogynistic ass who likes beautiful women and Jadie is… predisposed to being liked by everyone. He lets his flings into very top secret areas because he thinks they’re too dumb to understand what’s happening anyway.

I’m sure her file is a mile high by now, you have my full permission to meet with her about it.
