Team Maxon vs. Aspen
I don’t understand why almost everyone (including me) feels like Maxon is the obviously better guy. Like what exactly is wrong with aspen? Just taking the two without considering social rank, Aspen fought just as hard as Maxon for America and loves her just as much and wasn’t afraid to tell her. Aspen isn’t a bad choice at all. I just jumped on team Maxon without a second thought and never even considered Aspen after that. The more I think about it, I can’t understand why I like Maxon better. I just……….do?????
Exaxtly check my long rampage about that on my page. I seriously have the same question.
You like Maxon because of his abs. End of story.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. I see. Everything has become clear………. Wait. But Aspen has abs too😭*crisis mode because I can’t figure out why i was automatically team Maxon*
Because Maxon has a tragic backstory and he isn’t perfect after all, and all his little quirks are equivalent to a prince who is just a boy. Now, Aspen…is basically perfect. He isn’t really perceived as a flawed character. He is a hero who still gets the girl in the end.
I hated Aspen from the beginning. He was never good for America. He was a jerk to her, was totally irrational and it seemed to me like he was really like about the physical relation ship. Idk, it’s just, they never seemed right together from the beginning to me.
Aspen is not a jerk. He broke up with America because he wanted to be the one to feed her, not the other way around. He wanted to be a proper husband who was able to feed a family. He knew that her life as a Five could be marginally better than a life as a Six. He didn’t want that for her.
He wanted the best for her, because he is a selfless person. Aspen works several jobs to feed his family of seven (his mother and his six younger siblings). Ever since his father died he has been the main reason his family stayed afloat from borderline poverty. Aspen has been the man in the family for a very long time, and so it was natural for him to want that with America. He wanted to be America’s hero too. But America is her own hero. She has the ability to save herself and others. In that way, she and Aspen are alike.
Aspen told America to enter the Selection, despite the slim chance that she would be chosen out of the thousands of other girls who entered, because on that slim chance, she would become a Three, and ergo have a better life.
The break up wasn’t an irrational act. It was deliberate. Aspen wanted her to be happy, and he didn’t think that she’d be happy being a Six. This may be cliche, but love can make people irrational. When he saw America at the palace, he began to pursue her again because he was now a Two. He would be able to feed her and protect her.
Though the physical aspect of their relationship is significant, they did have a genuine emotional connection that was also bound by the shared experience of starving and also striving for a new life in which they would be wealthy. Aspen was the boy who wore ripped jeans and overused t-shirts and bathed in homemade soap and not store-bought, and yet he managed to be loving, selfless, noble, and a genuinely good person. America was the girl who had a talent to sing and play several instruments, and she took that in stride and with grace. She didn’t brag about it. She used that talent to earn money for her relatively big family as well. She cooked for the family as well as Aspen, because she knew that he probably ate the least, even though he was the eldest, so that his mother and siblings could get their fair share of food.
They were right for each other, once upon a time, except America was Selected and met Maxon. She changed throughout the course of the series because of that. Maxon Schreave is practically the heartthrob of Illéa who would do many good things, no doubt. However, the lower castes (i.e. America) would perceive him as the snobby prince with too much money that could save millions of lives from poverty. When America met him, she realized he was not a snobby, stuck-up prince, but a boy who should have been broken a long time ago.
Maxon and America were right for each other too. He saw his country through a different pair of eyes; eyes that have seen more hardships than he could ever imagine. She saw Maxon in a different light, a side that no one else saw. Maxon may not have fallen for America the same reason Aspen did, though both saw her good heart and altruism. There can be no comparison between the relationships, because Maxon and Aspen are two very different people.
They were both right for America, but in the end, America chose Maxon because he was more than she ever knew and expected. Yet America could have chosen Aspen, and she would have still been happy. America didn’t need saving; in the end, it was Maxon. Aspen and America are heroes, and it should be understood that they couldn’t save the other, because they had the ability to save themselves and other people who actually needed saving. Aspen fell for Lucy because she has experiences misfortunes that he never would, and she managed to live serving other people without complaints. Aspen could be a hero to her.
In conclusion, Aspen does not deserve hatred or any malignancy. He was good for America, but Maxon is as well. Aspen and America’s physical relationship is more prominent than Maxon and America’s, but then again, Aspen and America have known each other longer. They were right for each other, but that was before. In the end, America knew who she wanted to marry, but she also knew to keep Aspen in her heart because he was her family.
I apologize for having written a lengthy response in the format of a nine-paragraph essay, and I do understand that Tumblr is not an institution. However, I felt the need to defend Aspen.

Hey look I’m sorry if that came off the wrong way. I didn’t mean it like that. I know I said he was a jerk, and irrational, in fact saying that was actually kind of irrational. Aspen is a really good guy, I now that he works hard and everything, it’s just I don’t like the people who think they should never except help EVER. I know he fixed that problem in the end. I’m sorry for judging Aspen before I even took a breath. If you read this entire post btw I’m proud of you. We have all been rambling LOL sorry all you asperica shippers. I didn’t mean to be rude.
That was amazing maxonsabs
