I fell in love with the fabric patterns from Ruby Star Society’s Food Group collection and managed to find some at the local hobby store!! Made a cute bag that can actually hold my hobonichi.
Size: 28 x 27.5 x 11cm
needed something to put my completed projects in or whatever so I thought “Hey I’ll make a storage basket of some sort” and ended up with this storage bag(?)
Hobonichi A5 Book Cover Tutorial
Step 1
Wash, dry, iron, and cut the fabric to size. The fabric sizes are:
One rectangle of 14″ x 9 1/2″ of fabric for the outside of the book cover.
One rectangle of 14″ x 9 1/2″ of fabric for the lining
Two rectangles of 14″ x 9 1/2″ of medium to heavy fusible/iron-on interfacing
Two rectangles of 5″ x 9 1/2″ of the same fabric used for the outside of the book cover
Two rectangles of 5″ x 9 1/2″ of the lining fabric
Two rectangles of 5″ x 9 1/2″ of medium to heavy fusible/iron-on interfacing
Rectangles of squares for the pockets with a width of 5″, the height may vary. Fabric can be the same as the cover/lining or could be a different pattern/colour that matches
Elastic band (I didnt measure this oops)
Optional: strip of cloth in the middle of the book cover (I did this because I had just enough leftover and didn’t know what to do with it). Height 9 1/2″, varying width
Step 2
Fuse the 14″ x 9 1/2″ interfacing to the wrong sides of the 14″ x 9 1/2″ cuts of outside fabric and lining fabric.
Fuse the 5 x 9 1/2″ interfacing to the wrong side of the 5″ x 9 1/2″ rectangles of outside fabric.
Use a presser cloth to prevent interfacing sticking to your iron!
Step 3
Pin pockets to the right side of the 5″ x 9 1/2″ outside fabric
Place one 5″ x 9 1/2″ outside fabric and one 5″ x 9 1/2″ lining fabric together (right side facing)
Sew along the sides facing the inside of the book cover with a 0.2″ (0.5cm) seam allowance
Iron the seams flat
Turn inside out
Repeat for the other 5″’ x 9 1/2″ pieces
Step 4 (Optional)
Fold the edges long sides of the fabric strips by 1/4″.
Iron it
Fold it into half and mark where the center line is
Fold the lining fabric in half and mark where the center line is
Place strip of fabric on to the right side of the lining fabric so that both center lines match
Sew along the long sides of the fabric
Step 5
Pin the 5 x 9 1/2″ pieces to the right side of the 14″ x 9 1/2″ lining fabric.
Pin elastic band
Put the 14″ x 9 1/2″ outside fabric on top of the lining fabric, right sides facing each other
Pin
Sew along the edges with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a hole at the bottom to turn it inside out
Iron the seams
Trim the corners
Turn it inside out
Step 6
IRON IT
Step 7
Close the opening/hole with a ladder stitch or sewing along the top and bottom of the book cover (gotta match!)
Step 8
Slip in your hobonichi A5 notebook/journal and hope that it fits (the first cover I made was off by a teeny little bit and I had to rip out all the seams and re-do it :’) )
downloaded an app to keep track of the time it takes to complete my projects lol
Yesterday, I found this tea towel at K-mart (Australia) for $1.50 and thought, “That’s really cute. It should be a bag.” and now it is a bag lol
It took me four and a half hours to finish this bag!! That’s not too bad for my first go at this particular bag style (with pockets!). It’s pretty small at 21cm x 21cm x 9.5cm but that adds to the cuteness?
I made a pen wrap for a friend a few weeks ago but it didn't fit her TWSBIs. Found a fat quarter with the moon & stars print at BIG W and decided to give it another go. This time I tested it with my Platinum 3776 (it's snug in the second slot), Little Meteor (it's in the fifth slot), and a couple of gel pens because I don't have TWSBIs, oops. The cloth used for the lining and strap are from Janet Clarke's Astra collection.
I didn't know what to do with the rest of the moon and stars fat quarter and the two strip of Astra print so I ended up making a tiny tote bag to match the wrap.
found this lovely cat print fabric (It's Raining Cats & Dogs by Terry Runyan) at the local craft store and decided to make (or try making) an A5 hobonichi cover! I should probably take better pictures of it in the day time tomorrow.
I think I figured out how to make a better book cover after this. The measurements were off by 0.5cm, which was immensely frustrating. Also, I want the pockets to be better and more even instead of a chunk of it getting eaten up because I didn't account for adequate Seam Allowance lol oops oh well.
I want to keep making book covers until I'm GOOD at it but I have run into the dilemma of... what do I do with all these handmade book covers because I have TWO right now and I'm already going ?????????????
Fat quarters and fat flats were 10 for $20 at Spotlight so I picked up a few last week.
