This gives me chills. (the good kind of chills)
I never noticed how much he stutters through this before. Heartbreaking.
This is rough to hear knowing what happens. God, the feelings!
Raquel noticed the way Zatanna quickly changed her words. She steered clear of the slip-up, not wanting to bring attention to it. “Whatever you say, girl.”
“Dusty old books? Magician stereotypes, much,” Raquel teased. “And two words: shopping trip.”
Zatanna grinned, getting off the bed quickly. “I like the way you think, sister.” She grabbed her own jacket quickly and let the door open. “Shall we pay Happy Harbor shopping mall a visit?”
Raquel slid her jacket over her shoulders and stepped out into the hallway. "You read my mind, Zee."
“Don’t mention it,” Zatanna remarked snidely before sitting up and swinging her legs over the side of her bed. “Over there by Ret’s cage. I was debating on whether or not to give it to him, but…in the end, you won out.” She grinned.
“Good to know I just barely mean more than your bunny,” Raquel rolled her eyes as she went to pick up her jacket. While she was stooped low, she opened the cage door and rubbed the rabbit’s head affectionately. “At least you’re taking good care of him. To be honest, I thought Wolf woulda gotten a bite out of him by now.”
Zatanna scoffed. “What?! Of course not! That cage is fully wolf-proofed. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would to get the spell right, but there’s no way Wolf’s greedy maw is getting into this room and through that cage.” She stuck her tongue out childishly. “So there.”
“Bet’cha he’ll find a way anyhow,” Raquel said, fake-innocently. She slung her jacket over her shoulder. “And, no offense, but you look bored as hell. That book’s as big as your whole head—there’s no way you can finish that whole thing.”
“Don’t tempt fate!” Zatanna warned, before coughing after realizing what she’d said. “Or. You know. I meant jinx it. Don’t jinx it.” She flipped a page of her book forward without really reading it.
“Yeah, I’m pretty bored. Not that this stuff isn’t fascinating…” she slammed it shut, and as she did so a bit of dust flew out. “But I’m sure you have a more entertaining activity in mind?”
Raquel noticed the way Zatanna quickly changed her words. She steered clear of the slip-up, not wanting to bring attention to it. "Whatever you say, girl."
"Dusty old books? Magician stereotypes, much," Raquel teased. "And two words: shopping trip."
I was so busy stuffing my face yesterday, I forgot to say happy Thanksgiving to y'all! Hope you had a good one!
A Date-Type Situation
Kaldur was silent. He knew these were things she needed to get off her chest and they were things he needed to hear, too. He squeezed her hand gently, partly to reassure her again, but this time he also wanted to show that he wanted her as close as he could get her. “Raquel…I’d rather you didn’t put yourself below me like that. Besides it simply not being accurate, you’re just making yourself feel bad about yourself, and that doesn’t help anyone.” he frowned. “And what if I disagree with you? What if I think you’re the amazing one?” At this point, Kaldur wasn’t even sure what he was doing. Was that a compliment or a complaint? He’d let her take that as she wanted.
She turned his frown upside down pretty easily, though. “First of many dates? All right. I accept your deal, Raquel, and I accept it with no doubt that you and I will make it happen.” The way she was looking at him made his heart ache with the emotion she was sending and he tried to reciprocate. He couldn’t believe she trusted him so much. He drummed the fingers of the hand that wasn’t holding her hand on his leg — one of his childhood nervous habits that reappeared in times of indecision — and he stood up from his position in the seat across from her and made his way deliberately to where she was and slid in next to her. He once again entwined his fingers with hers and tried not to let his smile show how nervous he was inside. “You don’t mind that I wanted to be a little closer, do you?”
Raquel looked up sharply. He was being...serious. Completely serious. "You think...I'm amazing?" She often joked about her apparent 'awesomeness' and things of that nature, but mostly they were just jokes. She never thought someone would agree.
"Kal..." she started, only to trail off with a shake of her head. She was stunned. "You know, I don't doubt us all that much either." She looked up at him again, gratitude in her expression as she made room for him on the seat. "In fact, I think....I think we'll be okay." The hand she'd been keeping still in his hand sprang to life and gave him a squeeze of appreciation. Raquel wasn't often an emotional person, but she was glad only Kaldur had been around to see it. She trusted him fully, and something told her she wouldn't regret that anytime soon.
"'Course I don't mind. I was about to hop the table myself," she said, elbowing him gently. "...thanks, Kal. For--well, for everything." She smiled at him and pressed a gentle peck to his cheek.
Raquel arrived through the zeta-tube, a lollipop between her teeth and a smile on her face. She walked into the Cave looking for Zatanna. “Zee? You here?”
Zatanna was lying on her bed, kicking her legs in the air back and forth as she read a book. Rocket’s jacket was next to her rabbit’s cage, just hanging out.
She heard Raquel calling and brought her head up. “Over here! In my room!” She called back, feeling too lazy to bother to get up and greet her.
Raquel followed the sound of Zatanna’s voice until she was at her room. “Thanks for the warm welcome,” she smirked as she leaned against the door frame, shaking her head. “Got my jacket?”
“Don’t mention it,” Zatanna remarked snidely before sitting up and swinging her legs over the side of her bed. “Over there by Ret’s cage. I was debating on whether or not to give it to him, but…in the end, you won out.” She grinned.

Up High, Down Low
Raquel snorted towards the end of his story—she tried to cover up the sound with her hand, but it quickly turned into chuckles, and then outright guffaws. She couldn’t be entirely blamed; the image of a jealous Batman was hilarious.
“I get the feelin’ Batman would hate it if he knew you told me that,” she said, still trying to stifle lingering giggles. She inhaled deeply and straightened so she could give him a proper response. “And—don’t think I’m weird for sayin’ this or nothin’—but that’s pretty sweet of you. You know; it’s all sentimental and endearin’ and whatnot.
“Oh, it’s my turn to turn your emotions to mush, then?” Raquel joked as she remembered the story of how she met her mentor. It didn’t take long, as the event was very important to her. “Okay, uh, so believe it or not, the first time I met Icon I was actually-” she had the good sense to look embarrassed- “robbin’ his house. It’s one of the only illegal things I did that I don’t fully regret. Don’t get me wrong; stealin’ is bad and if you tell anyone I told you otherwise, you’d be lyin’. It’s just that if I hadn’t been doing that, I never would’ve met Icon. And he—well, he changed my life. I had to convince him to become a hero, but he was the one that turned me into a hero.” Raquel knew that didn’t make a lot of sense, and tried to explain. “I wanted to be in the hero biz for all the wrong reasons. Fame, glory, you know. Icon was the one that made me realize that bein’ a hero was a lot more than that. And you—well, the Team, really, helped out with that too.”
She looked down at her feet and swung them in the air. In all honesty, she hadn’t thought about her origins for some time. Bringing up the story again was…nice, to say the least. “Alright, you’re up. What were your first impressions of the Team? Like, everyone individually?”
Talking about the League always made him smile. The Founding Members were practically his family in a way and recalling ridiculous stories with them in it was fun and as Rocket had said, sentimental. It brought a warm feeling to life inside him.
It was enjoyable to be able to be honest with someone else that wasn’t Wally. So it might have felt just a little bit weird and Rob’s guard was still up, ready to block and evade any questions that became a bit too invasive, but he knew Raquel had enough sense not to ask anything too outlandish. The fear of Batman was probably on her, as it was in most people. Even the newer League members had enough sense not to ask about confidential stuff that Robin might know. No one wanted an angry Batman on their tail.
Hearing the same honesty from her was nice as well, especially since she was so blunt about it. Her story about meeting Icon was one he only knew a tiny bit about, so it was both interesting and something new. He smiled along, laughing when she shyly admitted that she’d been robbing the alien’s house. He nudged her foot with his own. “I’m glad you’re a hero for the right reasons. You make a good one. A hero, I mean,” he said, earnest and just as honest as before, if not more so. He pointed at himself and started picking at the edge of his mask. “Robin exists to help people and that’s the only reason there has ever been. Well,” the teen bit the corner of his lower lip, looking sheepish. “That’s a lie, actually. There’s no shame in having a bit of fun while being a vigilante.”
He smirked, drawing his legs up again and leaning forward. “The kid underneath here needed this life. It’s dangerous, sure, but it’s really helped me a lot. I don’t know if it’s the same for you, but I think it might be. Being a hero saved you from continuing to steal and stuff, yeah? It’s the same principle for me, I suppose.” Rob snorted, suddenly realizing he’d been rambling and had gotten off track. “Right, anyway, Aqualad was stiff and entirely too professional. I made it my personal mission to get him to lighten up a bit. I don’t think it worked much in the beginning. Kid Flash and I have been friends for a long time. When I saw him I remember thinking, “Wow he talks just as much as I do,” and then we ran off together while Flash and Batman talked or something.”
Rob cracked his knuckles. Should he mention Roy? The archer wasn’t really a part of the team right now. He wasn’t ever, really. “Meeting Superboy was a bit cool, since you know, he’s a clone of Superman and everything. When he started throwing punches, it got a little scary, I guess. Miss M seemed sweet at first glance and I remember thinking that I had to curb Wally’s awful flirting before she flew away back to Mars.”
“Artemis was cool, very headstrong. I still get that feeling from her whenever I’m around her. She’s got a soft side though, but don’t tell her I told you. She’ll hit me.” He grinned conspiratorially. “Ah, and I suppose now we’re at Zee,” The boy blushed, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand. Zatanna never really failed to make him flustered. He didn’t understand it! It was embarrassing and thrilling all at once! “Um, do I have to answer?” At her raised eyebrow and unamused expression, Robin coughed, looking at the tabletop. “Right. Well, I guess my first impression of her was me thinking she was beautiful. I can’t really deny that.” He laughed nervously, quickly moving on before Rocket could comment.
“Then we have you and I won’t lie here either, since that’s illegal in this game.. You kind of came in when we were knee deep in trouble, so you were practically a godsend. I loved seeing you fly. I still do, actually.” Rob grinned again, as was his nature. He loved having Rocket on the team. Her powers were awesome and very, very helpful. He hoped she knew that. “My turn!” He exclaimed excitedly. He loved talking, of course, but it had seemed entirely too one-sided lately, what with him chattering up a storm. “How does your tech work?”
"You and me both, slick. This hero gig is hard--but I'm glad I got into it. It really turned me around, like you said." Raquel puffed air into her cheeks and furrowed her brow, "I mean, I would'a gotten into all kinds of messes if I didn't have a change of heart."
She listened quietly while Robin talked. The kid sure could talk. If Raquel didn't like him enough already, she would've found it annoying. But it was obvious that Robin just let himself ramble without event thinking of it, and as she tended to do something similar, she found it somewhat endearing. She promised not to tell Artemis, and nudged him with her elbow when he blushed and fumbled over Zee. "Man, you've got it bad for that girl!" she laughed, then let him continue.
"A godsend huh?" Raquel leaned back slightly and pretended to check her nails. "I could definitely get used to a nickname like that. And, you know, if you ask nicely I might let you take my belt for a spin sometime." She tapped her chin, trying to think of how to answer his question.
"Alright, well I've got this...alien tech from Icon's spaceship installed on my belt. It's called an inertia winder--and it's pretty self explanatory. If I turn it on, I get covered in what I call an inertia field. With the field I can take some serious damage, 'cos it just absorbs the kinetic energy from hits and such. I can extend the field out and cover stuff up in bubbles--like what I did with Wonder Woman back when..." she paused, then waved her hands exaggeratedly, "you know, the League got mind-controlled. Uh, anyway, I can release the energy in the field and use it offensively. To be honest, even I haven't figured everything the winder can do..."
//i wonder what nicknames raquel has for robin...

Rocket and Aqualad went out for a little while, but it didn’t stick. As to any plans we may or may not have: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
