I commemorated Labor Day by laboring up Wheeler Peak at Great Basin National Park, Nevada. On record, it is the 2nd highest peak in Nevada at 13,065 ft elevation (behind Boundary Peak at 13,147 ft). Last week I failed to make it up to the summit due to heavy winds and not being fully prepared...but round 2 was won by balutking!

Getting back into Photoshop, haven’t used it in about 7 years. This is a very rudimentary image put together in about 5 minutes, but I haven’t hooked up my tablet yet so until then everything will be pretty basic...this came about because I saw a story of The Undertaker watching The Lion King on Broadway...so being a visual kind of guy, this image kinda popped into my head. XD
Took babygirl to the “Hello Kitty Supercute Friendship Festival” at The Orleans Arena. Not really an event I’d be proud to be seen at, but it was fun for her, so it was fun for me. Besides watching my daughter enjoy the festivities, the two biggest takeaways were the SPAM exhibit & my rekindled interest in utilizing Photoshop after 7 years.

If a Spartan hits the bell after a successful rope climb, and nobody is around to witness it…did it really happen?
When I did the Spartan Vegas Super back in April, I didn’t even make it halfway up the rope...fast forward three months later at the AT&T Park Sprint in SF, and I surprised myself by climbing the rope and hitting that bell! Never even imagined being able to do that, because it was only the 2nd time in my life that I had even attempted to climb a rope.
After that success, I was stoked...but also a little disappointed. Why? Running this Sprint solo, I didn’t really have anybody really watching me except my folks in the stands who caught a super-far photo of me climbing the rope, and the volunteer who was not really watching me. I just wish I had a picture to capture that moment when I smacked that bell like it was my B*TCH. lol
Oh well, maybe next time I’ll be stronger...or at least strong enough to use my selfie stick while I hit the bell. :p
Looking back at the River City comics I drew in 2006-2007, while not anything spectacular, it was my style back then and I am still amazed that I was able to produce something like this. The programs utilized and the time & effort taken took a lot of passion & a large level of commitment to complete.
Fast-forward to a bit under 10 years later, and it’s a bit disheartening that I haven’t been able to build a large portfolio like originally planned. If I had kept creating these shorts at the pace I was going at, I’d have a book or two already.
That being said, getting married to my beautiful wife and raising my daughter is something I wouldn’t trade for the world. So while it would be easy to say that having a family is the reason this all stopped, I won’t. It wasn’t “stopped,” just “delayed” so that I could enjoy LIFE...which I really didn’t have much of while I was doing these comics.
In any case, the itch to create something new & share stories went away for a few years, but it came back...and I think any artist can never truly lose that itch. The trick now is being able to balance life, work, and passion...if only there was a way to combine all three. Hmmm...
Did a Spartan Super a few months back where I had to hike up another mountain, but it was a very different experience than this. At the Spartan, I was surrounded by people who encouraged & motivated me to finish.
For this run, I had to face my fears, reservations & hesitations on my own. Just starting was a feat, because the start of the trail looks like something straight out of Deliverance or Wrong Turn. lol Plus there was my micro-fear of heights, and the thought that I could get lost, stranded, injured, or eaten by a bear.
After all was said and done, I conquered this mountain, this trail & all my doubts…and had a blast doing it!!!!
