faq: but how do i apply from overseas??
answer: money
the serial codes are only in albums sold in japan so if u dont have a friend who can send u the code u can use a shipping forwarder like tenso or blackship to order from a japanese retailer and ask them to take photos of the serial number when the cds arrive (may incur extra fee) <-- this is what im doing btw <-- if you live in aus like me youâre already paying $70 retail for $35 cd so it isnt that much more expensive
but also someone will probably record the livestream (i will be! and if i get into the talk show iâll record that too!! hopefully!)
its an incoherent stream of thoughts so pls dont repost anywhere thx
translations here are mostly l i t e r a l see twt for the v2 of my lyric tl
[yoomgi verse]
é æçăȘ Moon Light
the charming/bewitching moonlight
ä»ćź”ăç ăăȘă
another sleepless night (literal: tonight again canât sleep)
*japanese doesnt always have pronouns so i used a vague sentence here but in general no pronoun = assume first person. so this is rly âi canât sleep again tonightâ
ææăăăé Œăă«
relying on the light of the moon
*tsukiakari (ææăă) = moonlight but i felt it was too repetitive w the earlier line so,,, light of the moon!
ćăźć ăž Hide and Seek
hide and seek towards you
*this is the literal tl, moto e (ć ăž) is used when heading towards something. if u want to reword so that it makes sense: â(iâm playing) hide and seek towards youâ
*if u treat this as a run on sentence w the prev line: â(im playing) hide and seek relying on the light of the moonâ
ćżăžăšćżăłèŸŒăă§ćăźéèż
creeping/sneaking into your heart, right up to you
èżă„ăăźăăă€ăźéă«ă
approaching before (you) know it/before (youâre) aware
*again no pronoun
ćăăçźéąăăȘă No more
canât take (my) eyes away from you no more
.
.
[hobi verse]
*im joining lines together so they make sense
æ°ă„ăăăȘăăăă«èżă„ăăŠă Slowly
(iâm) approaching you slowly so that you donât notice
äșćăăă Baby /
(iâm) giving u advance notice baby /
*i didnt use advance notice for the tl bc it would be repeating the word notice from the line above. i see yokoku in announcements of stuff a lot (e.g. next ep preview is jikai yokoku) so i went w notifying but if u RLY wanted to stretch it u could translate it as âim warning u babyâ (unthreatening tho)
/ çĄéČćăȘćăćȘăăăăă ăăźă
literal: iâll gently take your defenceless/vulnerable/unguarded self
a diff (softer) possible interpretation: iâll gently accept your vulnerable self
*muboubi (çĄéČć) isnt defenceless as in helpless but defenceless as in unguarded. corrected this in ver 2 of my tl as defenceless was a bit too literal
*itadaku (ăăă ă) is to receive/accept/take something. humble form so speaker (first person) is subject
ćăźæ·±ăăšăă now
your deep parts now
*if u treat this as a run on sentence from prev line its âiâll gently take your unguarded self, your deepest parts nowâ
.
.
[bonus: last verse]
*some lines joined together
èŠăèŠăă Moon Light
the peeking/peeping moonlight
*as u can tell this refers back to first verse w the charming moonlight
ä»ćź”ç ăăăȘă
doesnt let (?) sleep tonight
*bc of lack of pronouns u could have 1) the peeking moonlight isnt letting me sleep tonight (thanks run on sentences!) or 2) iâm not letting you sleep tonight (wiggles eyebrows)
æĄăăăăăăźæăéąăăăăŻăȘăă
(i) donât want to let go of the hand grasped tightly (in mine)
.
.
so to summarise you can interpret the verses like
zzz cant sleep gonna find u --> wow ur so pretty -> (bridge) (is it called a bridge? idk) time stops --> im approaching u slowly...to take u gently... --> (bridge?) HEARTBEATS RISING --> just close ur eyes and ill show u a miracle --> ur handâs in mine and im not letting u sleep tonight ;o
or you can have an interpretation that goes
wow the moonâs pretty --> ur so beautiful --> i accept the deepest parts of u --> the moonâs a peeping tom and i cant sleep and also thereâs a hand here (???)
âI get really nervous on large stages, but the feeling of âI have to do itâ makes me that much stronger.â
When it comes to memories of America, it has to be the BBMAs. It was our first live performance with Halsey, so it really left an impression on me. I also met Drake, who Iâve always admired, and he said âYou guys are the most famous in America right nowâ. I found it funny to have the person who I consider to be the best in America say that to us.
Being on an incredibly big stage makes me nervous, but when weâre in America my feelings of âI have to do thisâ grow even stronger to make up for the members. It canât be helped, since the others canât say that much. I think Iâm cooler than usual when Iâm in America. (laughs)
Speaking of cool, personally I find JK to be really cool recently. Heâs pretty much always working out. I havenât been able to exercise much lately, but JK is always building his muscles. Thereâs something mesmerising about his body, even from a manâs perspective. (laughs)
The other thing that left an impression in America was the second concert in LA, when I looked at the audience during the encore. Thereâs a performance where they illuminate us with their phone flashlights, and it was just so beautiful. The Japanese original song âLightsâ this time is exactly that. In a dark space or dark time, look at that light and keep walking. In a way, itâs the light that ARMY have shown us, and also ARMY themselves⊠I made the song with those kinds of feelings. Thatâs why, when I close my eyes now, what comes to mind is⊠Huh? Itâs V. Because I saw him sleeping over there just now. (laughs)
Q. Was your legendary Rose Bowl comment an adlib?
I prepared a comment for the encore, but the audienceâs lights were so pretty they blew it all away. It was so beautiful, some words about the galaxy just came out.
Q. Whatâs your recommended point of the new song?
Boy with Luvâs dance that looks like hitchhiking. I want to try it for real, but I donât think anyone would stop for me because Iâm scary. (laughs)
Q. How do you refresh yourself lately?
I like looking at art. In terms of Japan, I like Senju Hiroshiâs âTakiâ. Iâve heard Senju-sensei has an art gallery, so Iâd like to visit one day.
Q. Do you have any plans to write a book in the future?
It was my dream to be an author when I was in primary school. But after meeting music and having my dreams fulfilled as BTS right now, Iâd like to continue working hard with BTS. (laughs) Once Iâm 40-50 years old, itâd be nice to write novels and essays.
JIN
âEven in the smallest moments of our daily lives, we show consideration for each other. Thatâs part of what makes us BTS.â
Iâm the eldest of our team, but Iâm the type to approach others with no regard for age hierarchies. Iâve never really been overly conscious about those things, but recently Iâve started to believe that âthe culture of changing attitudes or the way you treat others based on an older or younger age isnât goodâ, and it also makes the relationship seem lifeless. The fact that not only me, but the other members also think this way is part of what makes BTS BTS. Showing consideration for each other over everything, no matter how small, can be felt in the smallest moments of our daily lives. If thereâs something that another member wouldnât like, another member would speak up and say âYou should probably stop thatâ first.
Apart from that, the members charms that only I know⊠I think ARMY would know better than me. Since Iâm not watching the others that closely⊠(laughs) Ah, but itâs funny if you pay attention to RM during the American interviews. Heâs fluent in English and leads the interviews with his answers, but he also makes sure to direct some questions to us. Whenever he does that, he makes sure to give us the chance to answer with one or two easy words instead of a difficult sentence, so that weâre able to answer them too. Like how RM excels in language, and the others excel in dance and singing⊠Our teamâs strength is in how we each have our own speciality, which I think is very cool.
Q. Whatâs a âsmall happinessâ you felt yesterday or today?
Iâve been into the TV show âWalking Deadâ recently. There was a character I didnât really like that I would have preferred to be gone. Then a zombie solved the issue for me. (laughs)
Q. What do you see when you close your eyes right now?
(While closing eyes) A zombie. (laughs) They keep appearing when I close my eyes.
Q. Whatâs something cute about the members?
When they meet celebrities theyâve always wanted to meet at Billboard, they get really happy.
Q. What choreography do you like from BTS songs?
The part where we hit the table in Dionysus.
Q. How do you refresh yourself lately?
âŠZombies. (laughs) Iâve only talked about zombies today, is that okay?!
JUNGKOOK
âPersonally I wish I had a single talent that I excelled inâ
Thereâs a lyric in the new song âLightsâ that goes like âNobodyâs perfectâ. I really love this part. Itâs like Iâm being consoled that itâs fine not to be perfect. People often praise me saying that my dance and singing is perfect, but thatâs not true at all. I wish I had a single talent that I excelled in. Iâve tried many things in search of that, but right now Iâm focusing on doing my best in the things I need to do. While doing that, listening to this song makes me realise I donât have to be perfect, which is comforting. Ah, I donât have anything Iâm particularly good at, but there is something that Iâm bad at. Using my head! Iâm really bad at that. (laughs) Speaking of new songs, Boy with Luv is also a really good song. After all, its choreography is rather simple out of all of BTSâ songs. Thatâs a happy point for me. (laughs)
Itâs really difficult to completely recover your stamina while standing on the stage. Even I unconsciously try to squeeze out the last of my energy as the concert nears its end. There have been times where Iâve been unable to move from muscle pain the day after a concert. Thatâs why right now my top priority is to not get hurt. I want to be able to build myself up and manage my body more⊠Huh, what part of myself am I most confident in? Ah⊠(shy smile) Hmm, I wonder. I donât know myself. Iâll do my best to build my body up more!
Q. Whatâs your honest opinion of the current world tour?
Thereâs a song called Mikrokosmos on our album, but itâs like seeing that for real. Itâs so inspiring and makes my heart burn sharply. I really think of it as a happy moment to me.
Q. What do you see when you close your eyes right now?
Lots of things come to mind, but none are very clear. Theyâre all a vague blur⊠Like I can nearly see it, but canât. (laughs)
Q. What part of the members do you think is adorable?
Jimin. You can tell he really loves the stage from the bottom of his heart. We really understand each other in that way.
Q. Whatâs a method of relaxing that youâre into?
Recently I went to Ariana Grandeâs concert and had a lot of fun. I was encouraged as an artist and I was able to enjoy the music a lot, so it was great.
Q. What are the conditions for you to think that someone is wonderful?
Someone who has a lot to teach others, someone I can understand. And someone who is cool!
SUGA
âThe nerves at Billboard, the choreography of a new song. I always enjoy doing new things.â
We barely have the chance to do these sorts of interviews anymore, so being able to send our words to the readers and ARMY like this makes me happy.
When we make original songs in Japanese, we take a lot of things into consideration when creating it. What I noticed in doing that is that thereâs a certain sensitivity that can be found only in the original Japanese songs. Like with the songâs melody and style, the lyrics are just as sensitive. With all the emotional parts, I think the new song âLightsâ has especially brought out those emotions well.
Iâd also like you to pay attention to the choreography of Boy with Luv! Thereâs something new about it compared to our style until now. I always enjoy doing new things. Even at Billboard, that feeling of elation seeing our group name during the Top Duo/Group award. The feeling of tension entering the Rose Bowl like weâre participating in the finals of the World Cup... Theyâre all memories Iâll have forever, and it was all so much fun.
When I want to switch over from that exciting space and relax, I often listen to lo-fi hip-hop. Itâs mentally comforting. My favourite is Nujabes. Iâve always liked him in the past, but Iâve been listening to him more again lately. As for recent changes, Iâve gotten into a game. I wasnât a person who played games, but now Iâm really into a certain game. As long as I have the chance, Iâll be playing it. Iâm the type to continuously do something once I become obsessed with itâand not only with music. Everyone says Iâve become more talkative since I started playing games? Thatâs not true. They just feel that way because weâre together 24 hours a day, surely. (laughs)
Q. Whatâs a small happiness you felt yesterday/today?
Yesterday⊠I didnât do anything⊠The time I spent lying in the hotel bed was my happiness. (laughs)
Q. What comes to mind when you close your eyes right now?
(Closes eyes) The feeling of being in the stadium and looking at roughly 70,000 people in the audience from the stage. It was really like looking at a galaxy of stars.
Q. Did you buy anything during this American tour?
Every time I come to America I buy another piece of music equipment. This time I bought a mic.
Q. Whatâs your recommended song for when you feel down?
Dionysus. Itâs Latin, so it energises you.
Q. What kind of person do you think is âwonderfulâ?
Someone who can do their job well. No matter their employment or gender, people who do things properly are cool.
V
âARMYâs cheers are my reward. It feels like everything paid off!â
Weâre right in the middle of our world tour right now, but I really felt that the fans are a huge source of energy to us once more. Every time we have a concert and so many people send us their cheers, it feels like Iâve been rewarded for all my efforts until now. The scenery at Americaâs Rose Bowl was truly beautiful. When I saw that picturesque scenery, it felt like everything had paid off. At the same time, because every member individually stands out, the whole group can stand out. I really thought everyone looked so cool.
In the free time during our tour, Iâve been into visiting art galleries and finding new works of art. Recently Iâve really been liking the works of Fernando Botero and Edward Hopper. Of course thereâs a charm with famous works, but there are lots of less famous works that are just as lovely. Thatâs why Iâve been having a lot of fun recently looking for works that arenât really well known by other people but shine in my eyes when I look at them. As for other ways to relax⊠I feel happy when I look at clothes and furniture that I like. I can understand why clothes, but Iâm not sure why I feel calm when I look at nice furniture. (laughs) Speaking of clothes, I splurged on a brand I love the other day! I bought a dress shirt and jacket and knitwear and T-shirts, and that made me really happy. As for other things I got excited about recently, the Korean catering just now was really good. I never imagined Iâd be able to eat that in America, so I was really happy. <3
Q. What do you see when you close your eyes?
Birds. I donât know if theyâre beautiful or not, but theyâre flying in a flock. (laughs)
Q. V seems to have a lot of friends, what are some tricks to making friends?
If I think someone matches me in personality, Iâll approach them as myself and talk to them. When I think we think the same way, Iâll often get closer to them myself.
Q. Which BTS song would you recommend to cheer someone up?
Mikrokosmos. I listen to this song a lot myself recently.
Q. What makes you think someone is wonderful?
Someone who has a clear mind and can express themselves clearly. Someone who makes you think âI want to follow this personâ just by hearing them talk. Donât you think thatâs wonderful too? Someone exactly like RM.
J-HOPE
âI donât need to worry about the other members when weâre on the stage anymore.â
The members have been together for such a long time, we understand each other as easily as breathing when weâre on the stage. After spending over 7-8 years with each other, we can tell what each other is thinking just by meeting eyes. Because we all know what our role is and what we need to do, we donât need to worry as much about what the others are doing on the stage anymore--in a good way. But in our hearts, weâre constantly making sure no one gets hurt or sick. Since every member is a precious, irreplaceable piece of a whole.
In order to make the stage a better place, I personally endeavor in image training. Iâm always thinking about how I can make the same concert contents into something fresh every time. As for things I do for my own sake... letâs see. Lately, I've been drinking onion juice (çăăæ±) every morning. I also take a variety of healthy things, like herbal medicine and vitamins. (laughs) I believe that a healthy heart is not only connected to food and drink, but also to maintaining a clean state of mind. When Iâm in a good mood, I think I naturally feel better, and smiling more also leads to having a better condition. The secret to my smiling face? Thank you for the praise! (laughs) This is how I am every day! When I live every moment in gratitude, I naturally end up expressing my feelings on my face. Even in this moment, when I think about how weâre appearing on the front cover of CanCam, I end up smiling out of gratitude.
Q. What was a small happiness you felt yesterday or today?
It really is a small thing, but breathing the air here in LA. Being able to work outside in locations like this both yesterday and today and feel the atmosphere of the area makes me happy.
Q. What comes to mind when you close your eyes right now?
I wonder what... âIf only I could fall asleep like thisâ, I guess? Iâm a little sleepy right now. (laughs)
Q. What part do you like from the new song?
I love my part in âLightsâ. Though Iâm sure everyone loves their own part! (laughs)
Q. What makes you think someone is wonderful?
Someone who does their work properly, a person who can clearly tell the difference between public and private, someone with high professional sense. And someone who smiles a lot! Yes, Iâm talking about me! (laughs)
Q. What made your heart skip a beat recently?
When I bought something I liked. I did a lot of shopping in LA... like art and things.
JIMIN
âSeeing all the membersâ sincere selves made me want to change too.â
Iâve been with the members every day for 8 years, so I really canât find anything unexpected about them. Despite that, during the current world tour I felt once again that each and every member treats their job with a sincere sense of responsibility. In the rehearsal the day before the concert, each member checks every detail of their solo songs so it takes roughly 13 hours. It made me realise how much they treasured the stage. Even being beside them made me think about many things.
Since coming to America, Iâve started sleeping and waking up early. Iâve started to get up early and listen to songs, open my computer and click around with my mouse. (laughs) The fact I can wake up by myself instead of having a manager wake me up for the first time in a while makes me want to be praised. (laughs)
What I look for in a wonderful person? Letâs see, Iâve made a new friend recently, but when I see that person I think âHow wonderfulâ. Theyâre responsible and treasure what theyâre doing with gratitude. I think attitudes like that are cool. Also, people who know what makes them happy are cool too. A recent moment where Iâve felt gratitude and happiness is when we sang Mikrokosmos at the stadium. The audience all held their lights and illuminated us. That situation and the lyrics really resonated within my chest. By the way, the lyric was âIt might even be that the expression of this night is again so beautifulâ [lyric credit: wisha]. Theyâre the words that RM wrote for me. (laugh)
Q. Whatâs a small happiness you felt yesterday or today?
The scenery here (the studio of a house in LA) is very pretty, so just looking outside makes me happy.
Q. What moment comes to mind when you close your eyes?
(With eyes closed) Hmm... I havenât eaten yet today. So Iâm thinking of going to eat after this.
Q. What song do you recommend for when youâre feeling down?
Boy with Luv and Jamais Vu. Jamais Vu is a song between J-Hope, Jin, and Jungkook. Itâs healing to me too.
Q. What made your heart skip a beat recently?
The biggest moment was when we received an award at Billboard! Also, my heart beats faster when I look at Cancam. (laughs)
Q. Is there anything you fuss over with hair care?
Iâve been struggling with hair care lately, so my hairâs getting shorter even if I donât cut it. I wanted to be a little kinder to my hair, so Iâm making it black for a while.

My Biography with BTS: JIMIN edition
Following J-HOPE, SUGA, V, AND JIN, this volumeâs edition of My Biography features JIMIN and his path from childhood until debut.
Going from a middle school student obsessed with dancing to a member of BTSâŠ
My oldest memory is from when I was 4-5 years old (Korean age), when I moved houses to another house right nearby. I remember helping out by carrying a rice cooker pot filled with rice grains. When I was little, I loved playing outside and would spend every day playing with my friends and the older neighbourhood kids. We played soccer and cops and robbers. I once ran so far I ended up in the next town over. (laughs)
Even in primary school I loved to play with my friends. Weâd often spend lunchtimes playing soccer. My favourite subjects were arts and physical education, and maths. I liked to draw pictures but hated colouring them for some reason. My dreams for the future changed every day. If I read a cooking manga Iâd want to become a chef, if I watched âGalaxy Express 999â Iâd want to become a Galaxy Express driver, and if I read ONE PIECE Iâd want to be a pirate.
Iâm very close to my brother, whoâs two years younger than me. Weâd play games and watch movies together at home. I remember watching the anime âDragon Ballâ and the movie âThe Host (êŽŽëŹŒ)â. We were like friends.
I was friendly with everyone in middle school too. There were six classes and I knew almost everyone. I was a part of the soccer club and table tennis club, and every day was lots of fun.
I became interested in dance in the 2nd year of middle school. I started dancing after school and wanted to learn it properly, so I started going to dance school in 2010. Dance school was really fun. Whenever I had a spare moment, Iâd go there and practice. I even entered competitions, which was utterly nerve-wracking. I actually still get nervous when I stand on stage even now.
I decided I wanted to go to an arts high school one year before I graduated middle school. I was even unable to concentrate on studying during my free periods, pondering âWhich high school should I go to, what do I want to doâŠâ As I was thinking, I eventually decided I wanted to stand on a stage. So I aimed for Busan High School of Arts, and as I wanted to learn more modern types of dance, I chose to do contemporary dance. I threw my entire self into dancing during high school -- all I had back then were my friends and dancing. Iâd meet up with my friends and practice, play, then practice again⊠I attended my dance school concurrently to high school, so I was worried about the lesson fees and said âI wonât go to dance school.â But the dance school teacher said to me âYou donât need to pay anything.â I was very grateful to them and practiced my hardest to meet their expectations, and I learned a lot from that teacher. I have never once thought I wanted to give up dancing.
In the spring of 2012, my dance teacher from middle school contacted me and I ended up taking the companyâs audition. I passed and moved to Seoul in May. The first member I met was J-HOPE-hyung. He greeted me by saying âLetâs work hard together!â The other members also talked to me first, and I remember as soon as I arrived at the dorm we all went out to eat. The most fun part of the trainee life was eating and playing with the other members. I still carry the ticket from when we all went out to the amusement park together in my wallet. It was the first time we all went out together to play, so itâs one of my most treasured memories. Iâve carried it around for 5 years already.
I transferred to the same high school as V in Seoul. I was in Class 4 and V was in Class 2, but V had lots of outgoing friends so he came to my class and told my classmates âPlease treat JIMIN well.â I get really shy around people, but thanks to that I was able to become friends with my class.
The most difficult part of being a trainee was how unsure the future was. It was hard hearing discussions about how close I was to being kicked out this time. That was why I wanted to get in as much practice as possible, so Iâd stay up practicing until 3-4am then go to sleep, then head back to the practice room at 6 the next morning and sing for an hour before heading to school. I continued that for a year. At that time, I never even dreamed Iâd be able to debut as a part of BTS. But then I was placed on the candidate list for BTS members and the hyungs said âWe want to do it with JIMIN,â so I found strength in that. I really felt âI want to debut with these hyungs.â
I was filled with so many emotions when I debuted. Receiving our first cake from a fan after the showcase, the members and staff crying together after it ended, appearing on a music program the next day, JIN-hyung crying afterwards⊠I have countless memories of those times.
I have nothing new I want to challenge from here onwards. I simply want to challenge myself into going as far as I can with what Iâm doing now. Other than that, I want to learn to speak Japanese better too. Iâm studying hard!

The corner that looks back on the lives of the members from their childhood until debut. The 4th main character after J-HOPE, SUGA, and V is BTSâ oldest hyung, JIN!
A gamer since kindergarten with a lively early childhood.
I was born in Anyang of Gyeonggi province, moving to the neighbouring city of Gwacheon only one or two years later. Thatâs why my memories start in Gwacheon. Up until just before debut, I didnât like getting my photo taken, so I barely have any photos of my childhood. It was really hard to find old photos of myself. You know how you have to stay still to take photos? I was really bad at stopping when I heard the words âWait, letâs take a photo!â
When I was in kindergarten I liked this dinosaur video game that was popular at the time. I loved it. Back then, we only had one console and my brother would always hog it, so I couldnât play even though I really wanted to. Thatâs why I love video games even now.
In primary school, I was a very lively child. Iâd play with my friends after school, go home for dinner, do homework, then sleep. That was an ordinary day. I had lots of friends too. Since I played every day, I was terrible at my studies. (laughs) The subject I liked most was physical education. The complete opposite to how I am now. (laughs) I liked running and did sports like swimming, tennis, and learned golf from my father, which I liked too. I started snowboarding when my ski-loving father took me along to the ski resort too. My father went on business trips often, but whenever he came home he would take me to do sports as a hobby together. And he also took me overseas a lot. Japan, Europe, Australia⊠But I donât really like travelling, so I was mostly coerced to go. (laugh)
I contact my two-year-older brother every day. We play video games together and talk about all kinds of things, so it feels like weâve gotten closer than when we were kids.
Attending a boysâ middle school and high school resulted in becoming a late bloomer?!
My best friends are my middle school friends. There were four of us in our group, but we went to different high schools. Weâd go to valleys in the summer holidays and snowboarding in the winter ones. We still contact each other every day, sharing dad jokes with each other. (laugh)
The music I liked was Lee Seung-giâs Delete, KCMâs íë°±ìŹì§ (Black and White Photo), the Turtlesâ Airplane. I listened to BUZZâs songs the most, and I liked rock ballads even now.
Both my middle school and high school were boysâ schools. Thatâs why I had no points of contact with girls for six years and couldnât look at girls in the eye in university. Iâd avoid eye contact while saying âHey, howâs it going?â (laughs) I made friends with an easy-going girl in university and eventually overcame that. She would hit me while saying âMake eye contact when you speak!â But I still hung out with my male friends more. (laughs)
Scouted onto the path of a singer, earnestly working on songwriting!
During my first year of high school, my dream was to become a newspaper reporter. I wanted to help the socially disadvantaged and would read the editorial column of the newspaper every day. I started to dream of becoming an actor when I saw Kim Nam-gil in the drama âQueen Seondeokâ during the second year of high school. I was so touched, I wanted to act in a way that could bring someone to tears too. That was why I chose to major in film studies for university.
Three months after I enrolled, I was scouted by BigHit and became a trainee. The three rappers were already there, and JUNGKOOK joined two days after me. I went to the practice room one day and saw a kid with Bambi eyes sitting all curled up. When I asked ââŠWho are you?â he stood up and said âAh! My name is Jeon Jungkook!â Even when I told him he could sit down he would say âNo! Iâm fine!â (laughs) The one who left the deepest first impression on me was RM, who was practicing his dancing. It was the first time in my life I was seeing someone practicing dance, so I thought âWow, itâs a trainee. How cool.â
The trainee life was fun. We would go out and eat together between practices. I actually liked dancing during those times too. After I debuted, I would be told âYour dancing is badâ, which made me lose confidence⊠But because ARMY would tell me âItâs cute!â and âYou did well!â I regained my confidence and was able to keep dancing until now.
I like my life right now and am satisfied with being in BTS. I only began to feel interest towards music after meeting the other members. Iâd never imagine myself songwriting music back when we first debuted. Because of the influence I received from the other members, Iâve been songwriting until now. Itâs not enough to be used on the albums, but Iâm told itâs good and will continue working hard on it.
Iâd act if the opportunity ever presented itself. Vâs the one acting right now, so Iâm satisfied with just that. My current priority is to get better at singing and performing, and have lots of concerts. Itâs exhausting, but itâs really fun.

My Biography with BTS: V edition
The third installation after J-HOPE and SUGA is the beloved V with his unique personality. We had V speak about his everything from his childhood memories to his future aspirations.
Grandmaâs little boy from childhood, bright and full of curiosity.
I was born in Daegu like SUGA-hyung, spending a few years living in a place called Gochang too. Iâve been a very bright child ever since kindergarten, and all the teachers loved me! Whenever I found something pretty, Iâd bring it to them and theyâd praise me like âWow! Well done!â which made me happy. I also have a fond memory of sharing these green candies that were popular at the time with my friend in the same giraffe class as me.
I have lots of memories with my grandma in my childhood. My grandmother would send me to and from kindergarten, so at the end of every day I would wait eagerly for her to come. She would always buy yuzu tea for me at a vending machine, and we really had a lot of funâŠ
When I was a primary school student, I was overflowing with curiosity and wanted to try everything. I wanted to sleepover at my friendâs house, I wanted to go to the training camp for taekwondo, which I was learning. There were many students that came from my kindergarten, so I had many friends. Iâd play at the park with my friends every day until the sun set.
But I wasnât only playing! I attended coaching school too. (laughs) I went from 6th grade to the 3rd year of middle school. Because I lived in the countryside, I could only imagine a future working in agriculture, so I believed I had to study properly. However, that all changed when I got into music. I donât remember when it started, but I begged for an MP3 so I could download all kinds of music and listen to it. Then, around the end of 6th grade, I started to dream of becoming a singer. That was the first time I had a clear dream for myself.
Learning saxophone and dance to aim for the artist dream!
I started to act towards my dream in the 1st year of middle school. My father asked me âWhat do you want to be in the futureâ and I answered âA singer.â My father used to dream of becoming an actor, so when he heard that he said to me very seriously, âIf you want to become a singer, you have to learn an instrument.â And so I learned the saxophone for around three years. It looked cool, but it hurt my lips and was heavy to hold. But still, I believed I had to learn an instrument to become a singer so I kept at it. Because I practiced my hardest, I even won a gold medal at a South Gyeongsang Province competition!
In middle school, I was part of a club called the broadcast dance club, where people who liked dancing gathered to dance to K-POP songs. With saxophone, dance, and coaching school, I was pretty busy.
In my free time, I looked forward to playing basketball with my friends. I wasnât any good, but my friend was a huge basketball fan, so I was influenced by them into playing all the time.
The reason why I quit saxophone was because I wanted to put more of my effort into dancing. Wouldnât it be lame if I became a singer that couldnât dance? I wanted to learn properly, so once I became a high school student I joined a dance class. Then, half a year later, there was a private BigHit audition. My friend was going to audition, and I had some free time so I tagged along. For the audition, I had to dance, rap, then show off an imitation and one-line gag. I was sure I failed. Then the notice that I passed came. I thought it was a lie. I was the only one who passed in Daegu.
A trainee era filled with memories with the members.
I came to Seoul in September of my 1st year of high school and started living in the dorm while attending an arts high school there. I joined after JUNGKOOK, SUGA-hyung, J-HOPE-hyung, and RM-hyung. I donât get shy at all, so I was able to become friends with everyone quickly. I was happy simply becoming a trainee and had fun every day. That being said, I practiced lots and didnât have a life of a normal high school student, but we managed to make our own memories of the dorm and practice room. What I remember even now is how the seven of us went to the amusement park on the 1st of January. We all tried to dress up fashionably for the occasion, which ended up with everyone wearing black. We really stood out. (laughs)
By the way, my fashion was always coordinated with the clothes my grandma bought me. My grandma had always had great sense in picking clothes.
Even after our debut was decided, my existence was hidden until the last minute as a secret weapon. Because of that, I couldnât tell anyone I was going to debut, which left some painful memories too. All the other members had schedules, but I was left alone at the dorm⊠Thatâs why when it was finally announced, I thought âMy dream from 6th grade has come true!â and was really happy.
BTS is the first and last team of my life. I want to climb upwards with the members until the end. Once we climb to the top, I want to look back and think âThis is how hard weâve worked until now.â If given the chance, I think Iâd want to try acting too, but doing anything half-heartedly is bad, so Iâll have to studying acting properly until Iâm satisfied with myself.

My Biography with BTS: SUGA edition
A corner to look back on how the members were raised. Volume 2 features the calm and fatherly presence, SUGA!
Growing from a cheeky child to a boy who loved books
I was born in Daegu, the third city of southern South Korea, and raised there until I moved to the capital. I was a very normal child when I was younger. I liked to fool around, so I donât think my kindergarten teachers liked me very much. (laughs) I remember theyâd scold me to âBe careful!â a lot. I liked sports and I was good at running. I was chosen as a relay athlete from primary school all the way to high school. Study-wise, I was above average.
I liked to play with my friends outside when I was young, but that changed as I grew older. You know how when most kids go out, they just gather in the park and donât do anything in particular? I didnât like that, so I stayed in my house on the weekends more often. My mother even told me âYou should go outside with your friends once in a while.â (laughs)
I have an obsession for collecting things, and when I was young I used to collect tons of books. I wanted to become one of those refined, educated adults, and I was at that age for that kind of behaviour. I read novels, poems, essays, newspapers⊠mature genres that didnât suit my age. Also, for some reason, up until middle school I had the habit of reading things from the last page backwards. Even now I read books on occasion. I can process lumps of text at once, so my reading speed is really fast.
My memory of my first love in primary school⊠doesnât exist. I really donât have one. The further you go from Seoul to the rural regions, the more conservative everything is. The boys and girls didnât talk to each other in the school I went to. Just being near a girl was super embarrassing, so I really didnât even talk to them.
Started making songs in middle school after meeting hip-hop
The first time I became interested in music was when I saw a Korean artist named Stony Skunk on TV. It was the era of ballads at that time, and on a music show of 18 groups youâd get maybe 10 ballads, 5 idols, and 3 other genres. They were one of those other 3. It was really cool how they were different from the others. I didnât have any interest in music until then, but thanks to Stony Skunk I started listening to hip-hop and reggae music. I also received influence from Epik High. It was just around then that the MP3 player came out, but I listened to them on my Panasonic CD player.
At the same time I started listening to music like that, I also started to write lyrics. It wasnât like anyone told me to, but for some reason I felt like I had to. I started making raps in primary school and started making music in middle school. Back then, there was no one around me that liked hip-hop⊠Now itâs really popular in South Korea again, but back when I started listening it was like an outdated genre from the past. I was probably the only one in the town that rapped. My friends would complain when I rapped at karaoke. You know how hip-hop has gestures where you move your hands? They teased me for that too.
But Iâve always liked hip-hop and I believe it was in my second year of middle school when I stood on the stage for the first time at the school festival. I performed Dynamic Duoâs âGo Backâ with a friend. I didnât like standing in front of other people, but for some reason I felt like I had to at the time. I wanted to show the rap I practiced too⊠even though I was really bad. (laughs)
I actually wanted to go to an arts high school, so I composed classic songs when I was in middle school. But the school fees were so expensive, I ended up going to a regular high school. I told my father âIâve already done enough music, so Iâll study hard in high school,â but I didnât end up doing that. (laughs)
Properly began rapper activities after joining a local crew
In middle school I only composed for my own benefit, as a hobby. I seriously started creating songs after changing my MIDI program. In my first year of high school, I gave my song to a person who was like a teacher to me to listen to, and they really liked it. That was when they introduced me to a hip-hop crew called D-town, which I joined. That song was like a new age beat, a hip-hop beat song like Nujabes. By the way, that teacher who praised me ended up going to Berklee College of Music and is now a music director for movies.
I started rapping properly once I entered the crew. While I had dabbled with rap from primary school, there was no one around me who rapped too so I thought I was the best. (laughs)
So thatâs how I started activities in the Daegu underground. But even then I knew that I couldnât feed myself by doing music underground. Many of the hyungs who did music with me back then were around 10 years older than me, some of them even in their thirties. The hyungs would do part-time jobs as they did music, and that looked really tiring to me. Even during our lives, it was difficult getting 100 people in the audience, and I hated that⊠I thought if I succeeded, I could be the bridge between the underground scene. There are so many cool people doing music in the underground, I wanted to become famous and put them in a better environment, I wanted the world to know about my hyungs music.
It was at this time that I found out Big Hit was holding an audition in Daegu. The only thing I knew about it was that it was a company the composer Bang Shihyuk had created, but I tried out anyway. The next day, I was immediately informed that I passed. From what I heard later on, he took one look at me and decided I passed right away. Even though I was really bad at rapping then too. (laughs)
An unexpected trainee life after first arriving at Seoul
I came to Seoul in my second year of high school on November 7, 2010. I remember it even now.
I joined the company not because I wanted to rap, but because I wanted to compose. Thatâs why I didnât have to dance, could leave rapping to the people good at it, and just focus on becoming a producer myself. Yet it ended up completely different, huh? (laughs) Back then, the company planned to have a full rap group rather than an idol group, but that all changed. The members back then were RM, J-HOPE, and me. And also i11even and IRON. If we had debuted like that, I believe our rap would have been good but the group would have failed. (laughs)
The future SUGA aims for as a rapper and producer
The reason why I was able to pursue the path of music like this is hugely thanks to my brother, who is 4 years older than me. He started liking hip-hop because of my influence, but the only person in my family who didnât oppose me taking the audition was my brother. They didnât like the fact I was doing musical activities in the first place, and my relatives would say âYou, doing music? Study more instead,â to me. Thatâs why the only one I let listen to the songs I made was my brother. I also told my brother first when I passed the audition. We really get along so well, like best friends. I normally donât drink alcohol, but the only time I make the exception is to drink with my brother.
Of course, everyone in my family now supports me. The relatives who told me to study now ask for my signature. (laughs)
I still have a desire to do producing activities from here on out. I donât have any greed towards the centre position, I just want to do music. I donât have any interest towards the entertainment industry, so while everyone else wants to act or go on variety shows I donât want to at all. (laughs) But first, I believe BTS has to become number 1 in both South Korea and Japan. And I want to aim to be the best in both rapping and producing. It may take some time, but we have to do it.

[P10-11] My Biography with BTS: J-HOPE edition
A long interview covering the membersâ early childhood until now. In volume 1 we bring you the hope-like existence, J-HOPE!
A childhood full of energy, his first dream was to become a tennis player!
Iâm honoured to be the top batter! Iâm the main character, fufufu. I wanted to show more of my older photos but I lost my mobile phone and all the photos from my middle school days. This was all I had left⊠Itâs a shame.
I was born in Gwanju, a provincial city to the south-west of South Korea. I was a cute child, overflowing with hope ever since I was a baby! I went to a kindergarten that was very art-focused, but as everyone knows, my art sucks. (laughs) I have memories of being unable to draw well even back then. I probably only went there because it was close to my house. I remember at kindergarten I was embarrassed âchanging clothesâ before playing in the pool. They made the boys and girls change together because we were all still young. I was really embarrassed by that! I was thinking âWhy do we have to change with the girlsâŠâ Thatâs why I have memories of secretly changing away from everyone else. But when I played in the pool I went all-out playing. Even after I got home from kindergarten, I would play outside until the sky turned dark every day. Those times were really the most fun.
I moved twice when I was a primary school student and transferred schools in grade 2. I was a very active child and loved to do sports! I especially loved tennis, so my first dream was to become a tennis player. I was really bad at it, but for some reason I had a dream of getting really good and becoming a tennis player!
After discovering the fun of dancing in front of others, he decided on the road to becoming a dancer.
The turning point was when I was in the third grade of primary school. The school I went to had a dance lesson for thirty minutes in the morning. They would play a dance video and we would copy it as exercise. That was when I realised I had a talent for dancing! My friends around me would praise me, saying âYouâre really good!â and I even appeared in those videos as a school representative. Every morning, the entire school would watch my dance and follow along. Fufufu. After that I became really interested in dancing, but that feeling intensified during my school trip in fifth grade of primary school. We had some time to show off our talents and I danced freestyle to some music my teacher played. Everyone praised me, saying I was great.
In sixth grade, I told my parents I seriously wanted to learn dance. My father vehemently opposed it. I was a fairly good student in primary school, so he wondered why I needed to dance. My father is a high school literature teacher, so I believe he wanted me to pursue an academic route more. But I loved dancing, so I told him âI want to dance from now on, I want to live on this path.â I never gave up trying to convey that feeling to him. Then one day, my father said to me âDance right there. I want to see how good you are at dancing.â I danced with all my heart and soul, with no music at all. After seeing that, the only thing my father said was âAlright. If you insist on it that much, then give it a go.â The only thing I could say after hearing that was âThank you very much.â
Participating in a local dance team, he dreamed of becoming an artist.
After I seriously started down the path of dancing, I joined a dance team when I entered middle school. There was a team that was created around me as the centre, and in the second year of middle school I joined a certain dance team as the youngest member. If you search on the internet you can probably find lots of videos from that time. (laughs) We participated in dance performances at other schools here and there. We joined street dancing competitions and won lots of awards too, so we were pretty well known for being good at dance. Because I started activities such as these, I started to dream of becoming an artist. I auditioned, won a popularity award at a JYP Entertainment competition, and even received a 300,000 won prize! (laughs)
Then in the spring of 2010, I passed the audition to my current company, Big Hit Entertainment, and started to receive proper lessons as a trainee. Thatâs why I have memories of middle school, but barely any memories of high school. Not having any memories with my friends is a shame⊠Even with graduation, the only one I attended was my primary school one. My middle school graduation overlapped with my auditions and everything, and my high school graduation was right in the middle of our busy preparations for debut, so I couldnât attend either.
During the trainee days in Seoul, he learned the charms of rap.
For high school, I enrolled into the school where my father was teaching. After I became a trainee, I received lessons in Gwanju through a contract education system for a while. My father supported me so that I could do it alongside my studies. I really am grateful to him. Then, during Christmas of my first year as a high school student, I moved to Seoul alone and took lessons every day at the company. Immediately after I moved, I met Rap Monster and Suga-hyung and we began living in the same dormitory. I really couldnât get used to it at first, and looking back now I must have seemed like a country bumpkin back then, but everyone treated me so kindly I was soon able to fit in.
I started rap around this time. Back then every member was a rapper, so rather than saying I was forced to learn rap, it was more like I naturally absorbed it through my daily life. I would return to the dorms and some beat would be playing, then a freestyle rap would begin⊠In the beginning I would wonder incredulously âHow are they were able to do something like that?â, but I could feel through my skin that this was what defined rap. It was very interesting watching them fool around, dissing each other through rap, talking to each other through rap.
Oh, thatâs right! This one time when Suga-hyung and I were trainees, we freestyle rapped a whole night away. (laughs) We would diss each other and say all the things we couldnât say to each other until then through our rap. Even now I canât forget that time. It was really fun⊠Also, I was interested in vocals as well as rap, so I took some lessons while I was a trainee. Those days were filled with so many lessons every day, I didnât even have the freedom to go out and play. But thatâs nothing compared to now, probably. Looking back now, I should have played more back then. (laughs)
After I became a trainee, the member lineup changed and for a year and a half it was just Rap Monster, Suga-hyung, and me. Those were the times I fell into a slump, wondering when weâd be able to debut. It was mentally tiring and the three of us would often talk at the dorms about it. Then the BTS project was settled and Jungkook joined us. After that, the vocal line was added and our group finally had taken shape. Among the members, V left the strongest first impression on me. He might be cool and popular and overflowing with talent now, but back then he was different! He was super loud and kinda smelled like sweat. (laughs) Hahaha.
Once our debut was decided, practice got even harder. We filmed the dance for âWe are bulletproof PT.2â every day for three months leading to our debut, and even the slightest difference in angle between our bodies or movements in our fingers meant we had to film it again. Those days were truly difficult, I even collapsed on occasion. Itâs an intense performance, so I injured myself lots. I even had too much blood accumulated in my feet and had to get it drawn out⊠We really suffered a lot. But itâs because we had that past that we were able to debut and receive the support of so many fans now. It feels like all our efforts and hard work until now have paid off.
