Reflection #6: How Doctors Take Women's Pain Less Seriously- 11/16

It is hard to believe that women are even being taken less seriously in emergency rooms as was Rachel. Unfortunately, after reading almost all of these articles, it is very clear that many unfair actions taken towards women are very common. For a woman to be experiencing excruciating pain in their lower abdominal area is concerning for any women. Society views women as being dramatic and that must of been one of the many reasons why they did not attend to her right away, let alone that she was a women. I went through something similar, I was not at the hospital for the same reasons but I did have a fever that would not go away, I had very bad neck pain and absolutely no energy. I thought that the first doctor who came to access me was a nurse. I thought that because of the way he was speaking to me. As any other person, I thought I could trust a doctor. Although the way that i was being treated by that doctor was very surprising. He was dismissing me and made it seem like I had a migraine. My mother asked him multiple times to run more tests on me but he refused, constantly saying that it was nothing more than a migraine. Luckily, my mother was able to get a hold of another doctor who did run more tests on me. Which actually turned out that I had something more serious wrong with me. The way Rachel was dismissed even though she was going through excruciating pain makes me believe that women are put down in all situations. It is important for women to prove all odds and to be as successful as men can be. The only reason why Rachel got taken more seriously was because female doctor was there to help. If more women were encouraged to follow those career paths, we would be able to help each other out.

Reflection #5: 10/29 Masked Racism: Reflections on the Prison Industrial Complex

As expected, it is very unfortunate how crooked many systems are in the US. Minorities are tried to be put down and decreased because according to the upper class, they do not fit societies standards. The prison system is an example of how minorities are frowned upon, people of color, homeless people, people with mental illnesses, and drug addicts are often targeted. These people are targeted because these are some of the problems that will no longer be in the public view, therefore they are put away in jail or prison. In the US alone, about two million people are currently incarcerated and more than 70 percent of them are people of color. 

Not only does this impact men, but it also impacts a large number of women of color and native Americans. The number of women incarcerated in California has doubled since the year 1970. Not only is this a burden to peoples families, but it is also a burden to the state who in fact has to pay in order to keep the prisoners ‘alive’. Instead, minorities should be given more resources to better themselves, they should get better education which will help society in the long run because there would be more professionals. They should also provide better healthcare whether it be in prison or in society because with the right help, they can improve their lives. Instead, people are targeted because of their skin color or social class, which in a lot of cases they are wrongfully blamed for. In order to see a positive change, help should be provided to those who need it, instead of putting them away as if they do not exist.

Reflection #4: African-American Women and Abortion 10/22

While reading this article, it was very shocking to me yet, there were things that I have heard before. Whether it be generalizing women’s rights, to women of color or minorities to be frowned upon because we are simply just women. African-American women’s awareness is indeed underdeveloped when it comes to multiple things. Although in this article, abortions and contraceptives are being focused on. The fact that women are not aware of certain procedures, reasons why as to why they need a certain procedure, or why they could not take birth control is absurd. This then causes for women to give up their rights unwillingly because they can not make personal and political decisions for themselves. A very interesting part of this all is that, even before slavery, women were worried about abortions and taking birth control. Given that small ounce of freedom, it made women feel more in control of their bodies even though it did not fix the overall problem. When these contraceptives or abortion options are taken away from women and they are not offered much help, they resort to something more dangerous which is taking care of the problem themselves which harms their bodies. Reading this article proves to me how things have changed somewhat, however it is all related to everyday lives. For example, what was spoken about in class today. Organizations pay crackheads on the street in order to be able to sterilize them because they believe that their children would be bad for society. African-American women should not be subjected to that nor should any women period. All of women should be treated the same especially when it comes down to choosing what we know is right for our bodies.

Reflection # 3: Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence Against Woman of Color

While reading Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence Against Women of Color, written by Kimberle Crenshaw,  it made me realize how much wrong there is in society, especially as a woman. It is injustice that women and specifically women of color are targeted everyday.  Crenshaw explores the discounted acts that women face because of their different factors such as, their race, class, and gender which is known as intersectionality. It has always been known that women are thought less of and are frowned upon for raising our voices when needed. For instance, in the article Crenshaw states that women were denied help when seeking it due to getting raped and abused, in some instances they feared of getting deported. Women were expected to intake so much pain and felt like they could not get away from being abused in their households. When there were finally laws set for women to seek the help they deserved, it was almost impossible for lower class women. It would not only discourage them but, it would make their situations worse. Women were not able to seek help from others as in friends or families because they did not have the resources to help others. Women are constantly afraid of speaking up or leaving their spouses after being abused whether is be physically, mentally, or emotionally. This often happens because the woman may depend on the man for support, it may be financially or stability. Unfortunately, women who fear of getting deported would rather live in danger than to seek help.

Reflection # 1–”Gender Education,”Fine, C.

As I was reading Gender Education, I was on board with their approach of restricting their children’s knowledge of the cultural correlates of gender. I agreed with what they were trying to accomplish because of everything that comes with our surroundings which is, to be set up with a specific mindset. Although, for a brief moment as I continued reading it became odd to me that they were going through extreme measures which resulted in their son pulling his pants down in front of other students in order to prove a point. Reflecting on this particular situation in the reading, it may have seemed to be inappropriate but, boys have penises and testicles which makes them boys, and that is what differentiates a boy and a girl (according to the story). As I continued to read, I realized that their approach was well thought out and their reasoning for it was very positive. People have to struggle with fitting into their genders because of society norms. Unfortunately, stereotypes are seen everywhere even in the media. This is seen in books, movies, TV shows and more. It seems to be as if the media seeks audiences who are comfortable with something that has become such a norm in our society. Yet this does not sit well with us women who know and believe that we are equal. We do not want the media to portray us as the woman who is supposed to stay home while the husband makes money, we want to be seen as women who have paid occupations. It is also mind boggling that classic books like Dr. Seuss did not have a female role in any of the 47 books that were published. These stereotypes are seen all around people, one factor may begin with parents. Children often learn from their surroundings and people closest to them. This is seen all over schools as children are growing up but it is very frequently that you hear a parent telling their child what is and what is not acceptable when referring to gender roles. It is seen when referring to a toy, sports, colors, and a lot more. It is very easy to fall victim to these stereotypes when it is what has been surrounding you, although I believe that it can change by the way that this generation becomes more open minded about genders.
