Hey so I know the fandom consensus seems to be that Jas’s parents died in a car accident but I’m pretty sure it was actually a house fire and I have some (very loose) proof of that?

TW for mentions of death, fire, etc etc (idk what to warn people about specifically so if there’s something I should tag for, please tell me), and obviously mild spoilers for Stardew Valley

I got dialogue from Jas in one of my saves the other day that said she had a dream about Marnie’s farmhouse catching fire, and while it didn’t immediately seem off it kept gnawing at me. I couldn’t find it on the wiki to confirm, but I did find it in the game’s text files after some digging around, and it’s labeled as a memory.

And, on top of that if you interact with her jack in the box, you get the following dialogue:

Corpses exposed to high heat often curl in on themselves, which could explain the “grotesque angles,” while the “hollow eyes” pretty obviously bring the imagery of a dead body to mind.

I’ve seen some people argue that this could be in reference to witnessing Shane passed out drunk in front of her so often, but their schedules don’t really line up, with him going to the saloon after work and getting home after she’s already asleep. The one time he is passed out in front of her (that you witness as a player), you get concerned dialogue from her, which makes me think this doesn’t happen often enough for her to mimic it with her toys.

Obviously this isn’t hard evidence, but I do think the two points combined point to her parents passing in a house fire, whereas the car crash theory I commonly see doesn’t seem to have much to back it up in canon
