It happens to all DJ's: the song request! Most DJ's don't like it, but how do you deal with people asking you questions during your set? There are different ...
DJ TLM knows whatâs up.
Words of Wisdom.
â˘Â âNo one wants to hear this.â - to a packed house
â˘Â âYouâre terrible at your job.â - drunk girl
â˘Â âWhat song is next?â - not the one you requested
â˘Â âWhy is there no one here?â - 9pm and the doors just opened
â˘Â âDo you take requests?â âOMG, he doesnât take requests... youâre a horrible DJ.â
â˘Â âYouâre just background music. Background. Music.â
â˘Â âJustin Bieber...â No. âRihanna...â No. âReturn of the Mack...â No.
Cash. Money. No.
I Said, No No No.
You'd be surprised at just how rude and aggressive some people can be when they approach the booth. It's a DJs nightmare.
One NYE we played Jennifer Lopezâs classic dance hit, âWaiting For Tonightâ, just after the ball drop and a classy version of 'Auld Lang Syneâ. It was an older crowd which appreciated the irony, but one drunk bro-type nearly tackled the DJ booth in opposition.
Sorry Brah
I once had a guest go to the ATM and come back with $100 cash to play some music that his kids could dance to, pop stuff I'd play anyhow. Money doesn't always talk, but it was their party the rest of the night.
Anon.
I often DJ queer events and dance parties to which the hashtag #Queers4HipHop arose. That's an oxymoron, right?
DJ Andy Morris, Providence
I once got a chant: 'Songs with words!!' from a group of drunk ladies.
DJ Nick de Paris, Providence
I legit told some girl who was like 'Is it going to be like this ALL night?' to which I replied, 'Open your mind; you might actually like something new.'
DJ Mercedes, Boston
Not Tonight.
It's funny when you're clearly doing a house music set and the one guy/girl who asks for hip hop always gets bent when you say 'Not tonight'. You rarely, if ever, see this type of aggressive reaction from house-heads.
The things people say and do would shock others if they new.
"Iâm not a fucking jukebox.â
DJ Lina, NYC
Brutally Audience.
Sometimes an audience can be just as brutal as a mismatched beat.
Accosting Craft.
DJing appears to be the one creative gig where no matter how good you are at your craft, someone is always willing enough to accost you at any one moment. They're usually drunk.
