That is a real comment I just read on a post about the Tiffany G situation regarding this years OTW election.
It astonishes me to this very day that there are people who aren’t aware of the history of fandom purges. Like hello?? It’s happened with FF.net twice, once in 2002 and again in 2012. All NC-17 works were removed without warning because they were deemed as “too mature.”
The reactions to Tiffany G’s comments are not unjustified. People who have lived through purges know what it’s like to loose thousands of fanworks within a blink of an eye. That’s entirely why AO3 was created, to give authors a place to post without the fear of removal. Fandom was kickstarted by adult women, that is a fact.
Censorship is not cut and dry. It has many oversights, like determining what is considered “bad.” Who’s to say works containing underage wouldn’t also fall under age difference? Oh, you don’t like non-con? Well, it was nice knowing A/B/O…
Tagging is a godsend, and AO3’s system works as intended. Exclude tags with things you find uncomfortable, but most of all, don’t read things you don’t like.
I’m gonna end this mini rant on one major point: fictional, written characters are not the same as real life children being harmed.
Because I just read a few AO3 censorship related posts in a row…
I’m not sure antis and people who want to remove certain things from AO3, like any content with anyone under 18, understand WHY those of us who are Of A Certain Age, aka the people who created AO3, fight so hard on this stuff.
Like I don’t think they understand that we have LITERALLY SEEN THIS BEFORE. People spoke up before about “child porn” aka anything involving any character under 18, or even stuff with aged up characters like an adult Harry Potter, but people assume Harry Potter is always 12 or whatever.
And when those complaints were made ALL adult content was wiped. FFN suddenly wouldn’t host ANY explicit fics. No matter how healthy, how fluffy, how consensual and adult and whatever. Just Nope. Things were wiped from existence. LJ randomly wiped entire blogs for being reported, banned users based on the say of Conservative Christians who shouted pedophile at the gays.
What happens when people try to remove objectionable material is that it ends with having no home for ANY explicit material. It’s happened again on social media under SESTA and FOSTA in the name of preventing sex trafficking. In the name of keeping smut out of the Apple store.
Archive of Our Own was founded to be a home for content that wouldn’t be hosted elsewhere. Where you could put something and not fear its deletion the first time someone happened upon it and reported you for whatever reason. Where no one is going to judge whether your fic meets some subjective standard of purity, so long as it’s tagged appropriately and is legal content in the US (which all written fiction is.)
We watched so many communities destroyed, websites erased, content lost and then a new generation comes along and is like “hey let’s do this again” and we’re like NO WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU INSANE?
They’re never going to accept your gay porn about other people’s fictional characters just because you got rid of that “icky” stuff you don’t like. You’ll still be a freak for it. You cannot respectability politics your way out of your shame and embarrassment at being associated with something others see as dirty. You’re going to have to grow up and just accept it.
I am surprised all the current AO3 discourse is arguing from the hypothetical as if we've not just been through that whole cycle with Tumblr. So much queer PG13 content got flagged when they wanted to remove the extremes. Things they said wouldnt be targeted did. Entire blogs disappeared into oblivion without even getting so much as a notice or explanation for what they did. So many folks got fed up and left the site altogether and it was a close call for the site to even make it out alive. And even then it took the longest time for it to build an active user base again and still to this day there is not as much gifmaking (of any kind of content, completely innocent not problematic content included) as there used to be. They said the main problem that inspired it all was the supposed rampant pedo community (which i never seen a trace of ever). And now people are acting like those who are weary of AO3 going down the same route are saying bizarre bullshit?

down near the murky waters of arcana city, there is a sprawling house where individuals can go to satiate a need or several needs they have in the presence of people who won’t judge them, mostly because they’re being paid no to. at devil’s playground, a club that caters to denizens of arcana city, the ones who need a little more than what traditional clubs offer to both men and women.
while most consider it a strip club of opulent proportions, the playground is also the home of a cadre of dominatrices that specialize in showing their clients who is boss and being perfectly discreet about it. hand picked by the head mistress herself, alecto malomedies, each woman is well trained in what she does and offers a variety of services, not including performing any sort sexual service. it’s a strip club, not a bordello - if you want that kind of stuff, alecto will gladly show you the door and ban you for life.
the highlight of the playground is their lead dancer, a beautiful red-head that often has a sad look on her face when she thinks no one is looking. she’s been there for as long as anyone can remember and has danced for just as long. maybe she’s looking for her prince to return and save her from the clutches of alecto or maybe she’s just playing up her siren ancestry.
stationed at the door of the club are two equally loyal and brutish bouncers - a pair of berserkers loyal only to alecto - who keep out the riff raff and throw out the individuals who can’t follow the rules.
so this a request for characters that want to dance or perform dominatrix work at devil’s playground. it’s also doubling as a request for ariel, flotsam and jetsam.
my idea for ariel is that she came to alecto (ursula) for a potion or a spell that would make her true love fall in love with her. warned by alecto that love spells/potions rarely end happily, ariel begged for it anyway and alecto delivered. however, once the spell/potion was used by ariel it backfired and the boy who we’ll call eric, fell in love with someone else. unfortunately, ariel’s payment was to dance at devil’s playground till she walked down the aisle in a white dress.
so ariel is trapped at the club, bound by a spell to keep her there, excepting for the times when she has to return to the water. i’d love it if she was a siren, but that’s entirely up to you. i’m totally open to faces and her personality and the rest of her background are entirely up to you.
flotsam and jetsam are berserkers that somehow came into alecto’s life. perhaps they both owe her a favor or they just genuinely want to be around her? that’s entirely up to you. these two are really open so go buck wild if you want them!

Born in Herz to low-level corporate souled parents who aspire to greater social standing and will turn on anyone if it means raising themselves up.
Learns the true pecking order in the world - who is richer and who works for who - early in life.
Develops a thick skin after too many battles on the playground earn him a reputation as a fighter.
Goes through school as That Kid, the one who gets into fights constantly and is nearly suspended and kicked out several times.
As he neared graduation, his parents, who up until that point have put up with him and supported him, pull the “we clothes and fed you and now you’re going to do this for us” card and force him into the Academy.
He tempers himself as best as possible so as not to get kicked out for bad behavior because he feels beholden to his parents and convinces himself that he wants to move up the social ladder, just like they want him to.
Nearly at graduation, he’s in a training exercise with his lance when he snaps and gets into a fight with his lead over proper tactics (the lead wanted to cheat in the wargame) and literally, get thrown under a truck.
The bones in his left arm are crushed beyond repair, leading to amputation and several vertebrae have to be fused while a few other are removed entirely due to damage sustained.
His parents are unable to afford the augmentation surgery costs so he is left with painkillers and office work.
Becomes addicted to painkillers, but keeps it hidden.
HIs superiors offer him a deal - go undercover to catch a cadre of thieves and they’ll pay for augmentation and boost him up the legion’s ladder.
He agrees and is publically thrown out of the Academy, but is secretly assigned to a handler and is told of Aust’s haunts.
His parents disown him for being kicked out, not knowing the truth
All his past acquaintances follow suit.
Slowly attempts to wean himself off painkillers, only to meet Seneca Aust while trying to score his next dose.
Seneca offers to pay for his new spine and arm in exchange for his tactical expertise and knowledge of legion procedures, rotations, and tactics.
Undergoes augmentation surgery, paid for by Seneca.
Over the next four years, he passes himself off as a thief and at some point, he becomes one.
As his handler continues to pressure him to come in and make his final report, he meets a talented artist being exploited by his aunt.
The gang helps said artist and over the next while, he begins to fall for the artist.
