First Impression: OM! Till Death Do Us Part
Okay. First things first, imma address two things straight off.
"They never said it was a game, they said it was a lifestyle app!"
Nope. They called it a game repeatedly. It's listed on Kickstarter as a game - not as an app which is also an available category. It's referred to as a game on their socials, on their website, on the promo, and on the crowdfunding pages.
"This game isn't made by NTT Solmare, it's made by indie developers."
Nope. This game is made by NTT Solmare and flaggs Inc, the latter being a software company that has also been used by Dank Hearts for the game "すとぷりWith!!" and Akatsuki for the game "HoneyWorks Premium Live".
Yes NTT Solmare shut down their older otome games. But they also own one of the biggest digital manga platforms in the world, Comic C’moA , that generated some ¥81.2 billion ($533 million) in revenue last year. And the parent company NTT has an estimated revenue of $90 billion in the same period.
So. The new Obey Me was and continues to be advertised as a game, and it is still owned by one of the world's richest companies.
And yes, they did still use a crowdfunding campaign for this game, as I've spoken about before. It's why I didnt contribute, despite loving the original game so much, and having been a VIP player of that original game.
They do not need your money. They never did.
And the original game remains the most profitable for them to this day - it's monthly revenue is still double what Nightbringer managed, and that's with no new content in years.
Let people criticise media produced by rich companies I beg. Especially companies they've given money to. Especially for media funded by fans for them!!
ANYWAY.
On to the review...
~
The Good
The soundtrack is banging.
The UI is clean, but needs improved.
It's slightly spicier in both text and art.
The stories are... okay.
There's no incentive to spend money, so you get to save your cash.
Audio has always been OMs strong point, and the tunes here continue that vibe. The sound production is good. The UI too looks very nice, but it is lacking in some key areas (lack of back button on many screens meaning home is the only exit; repetition of locations eg starfall in akuzon; lack of explain text on what items are and how to earn them, etc).
Within the stories there are some spicier innuendos, more fades to black, more smooches. It is still very very SFW.
The boys get nipnops on their card art. Hooray for anatomy! Although there is plenty of criticism on some of this art seeming mismatched by head and body. Still, inconsistent card art is nothing new for the average OM fan.
There is no point in pulling for cards or gacha items. It will literally only get you a few more pages of unvoiced dialogue and an illfitting outfit. Can't pull your guy? That's okay, you haven't actually lost out on anything. Gacha pulls are no longer disappointing because none of them are exciting.
How they plan to earn money though, that's beyond me.
I'm a Mammon fan, so obv I played through his whole main story. And if I judge it as a main story... it's not great. It's a very shallow depiction of who early game Mammon pretended to be, who is brainless and insecure, who is insulted by everyone, and who MC is given no choice other than to be mean to him. It's a recognisable trope, but it's not one most Mammon fans have ever enjoyed.
Plot wise, very little happens. Character wise, very little is learned. There are some smooches and blushing, but very little is voiced.
But. If I judge it as akin to a devilgram... it's not that bad. Sure, it's not up there with the best devilgrams of the past but it's fine. A silly little story, some smooches, him getting to be the protector, his bros actually being somewhat nice to him in the end, and him finding his confidence in front of them... that's enjoyable.
It's not what I'd expect from a "main story", it's not at all impressive, but it's fine.
~
The Bad
Very little of the dialogue is voiced.
None of the home screen is voiced.
The sprites are worse than previous games.
The outfits are worse than previous games.
Gachas for socks are not appealing.
F2p rates are awful.
Asking 30 quid for premium is gobsmacking.
Card stories are short and mostly gated.
There is no replayability.
Incomprehensible to brand new players.
Tutorial is not immersive (OG game's is!)
The random clothes are... random.
There aren't any actual lifestyle app staples.
I cannot overstate enough that this is the biggest criticism:
🚨 IT IS NOT FULLY VOICED. 🚨
Hell, it isn't even partially voiced. The original game had more voicelines on the homescreen than this, and more voicelines in the story and cards.
But in a game where much of the story and art and game mechanics have been stripped, people expected - with good reason - for what little dialogue there is to be FULLY VOICED.
I can absolutely 100% guarantee you that the reaction to this game would not be nearly so negative if everyone had their faves purring in their ears at command. It's such an obvious feature that everyone expected.
We get the ASMR releases. We get the song releases. We get the radio releases. We loved the anime episodes. We know that Solmare knows that the VA performances are a HUGE selling point of any Obey Me release.
And yet.
We get almost no voiced dialogue or lines whatsoever.
Y'all asked fans to pay for this. Jfc.
Aside from the lack of voicelines, we have to talk about the sprites. I don't want to, but we have to.
As a Mammon fan, I kinda get off easily here as he does have pretty much the average body of the lot. It's just that everyone else now also has his body. Beel has been deflated. And then with the tiny wrists, and the bendy elbows, plus the various outfits that don't fit on screen, and the low quality resolution, they all look like not cute muppets.
If the look we're going for is early 2010s mobile game aesthetic then congrats, but the original Obey Me looks way better than this.
The outfits. Again, Mammon got off lightly here. Some don't fit on the screen. Most don't actually sit on the body. The random clothes have zero relation to them being demons in the Devildom, or their various personalities. Actually, some of their demon forms don't either.
And for non-crowdfund pledgers, the demon form is all you get unless you get multiple cards in the gacha to unlock the... very basic pjs, or a recoloured version thereof.
This is the base game. And the third in a series. No casual outfit. No old outfit freebies (because of course, the original outfits were all tailored for different body types!!). Just outfits that all block other characters in frame if they even fit.
Why do I want random tshirts and socks from a gacha? Why would this give me dopamine? Why would I be enticed to spend money on that?
Like really, I'd call it a scam but they ain't making money on this.
I don't want to go on because I mean, we all know.
And yes, sure, they'll release more features maybe, and more outfits maybe, and they'll definitely be f2p friendly, and it's definitely understandable for a rich company to crowdfund and then deliver a substandard product on launch and we should all applaud /s
But do y'all not remember the first game? How good it was on launch? The story, the cards, the game mechanics, the jobs, the lore, the desire to keep playing and learning and collecting?
They had a goldmine.
OM fandom are literally shaking the fence begging to spend money on their boys and this app is like, "... nah."
~
The Ugly?
On a final note, lets address the "lifestyle app" features. There's a calendar.
So anyway, that's the game.
Remarkably, I'm not hugely disappointed, but it's a shame I knew not to get my hopes up.
I love these characters dearly. If the original game was to continue, I'd probably start my VIP back up again for it. For actual plot and story.
If this game had put in more effort, and genuinely had great story with some cool app perks, I would have been bloody delighted.
I want OM to succeed. I want irl merch of my mans. I see other games achieving more with far less.
I'll keep playing it. I mean checking it, there isn't really anything to play.
Of all the reactions I've seen, mine is far from the most negative. I kinda enjoyed the "main story" as long as I think of it as an okayish devilgram. There's some neat little bits of lore, albeit unexplored. I think Levi got some amazing lines through all the routes. But it isn't voiced. And there's no reason to pull for cards. I'm here for story and characters, y'know, not low resolution socks and pins.
Maybe I'll open up the original Obey Me to hear my favourite Mammon lines again and read the old devilgrams. That sounds like fun, actually. Imma do that.
~
(PS, I don't play LaDS. Zero clue how that game goes. I'd just like a good OM game to support.)
ETA WAIT I FORGOT Diavolo has no legs, lmao. C'mon now. You give him all that dialogue text and no legs? The disrespect. Mephisto got horny though, good for him.
Obey Me Ido: Main Story Lore 01-10
This is not a summary of the main story routes, but a collection of lore information from them - it is marked for spoilers.
Each route is its own version of the same broad background story, so some of it interconnects, while some of it is dependent on a romanced MC and thus does not.
The broader background lore can therefore be considered as canon, while other lore can be considered optional imo!
Also, some routes contain far more Devildom lore than others - Lucifer's is particularly packed, others have way less!! (°ー°〃)
Note - Lucifer, Asmo and Beel all begin their routes in different jobs than they finish. Other routes may refer to either job for those characters. This lore summary doesn't include the card stories.
~
The Deep Lore
First up, the tl;dr important lore:
Lucifer is no longer sworn to obey Diavolo.
Lucifer's magic can be breached by Barbatos, but not by Diavolo.
Diavolo is about to be made king.
Satan is now First Consul, a status equal to Diavolo prior to his coronation.
House of Lords not entirely pro-Diavolo or pro-peace.
Former demon king has gone missing.
Mammon remains Lucifer's second.
Levi is who Lucifer keeps the closest eye on for fear of potential wars.
Levi is not as sensitive to magic as Satan and MC.
Diavolo's horns are controversial.
Barbatos "hated" his former job.
Mephisto now runs RAD.
~
🦚 Lucifer
• Lucifer Lore: bought the House of Lamentation for them all. Assumed to be Diavolo's successor now Barbatos is gone. Approached by Diavolo to be First Consul - intends to decline position. Bigs up Satan to Diavolo for his work as coordinator. Loves dancing after midnight at the clurb. Places a magical barrier around HoL that his brothers and MC cannot break. When confronted by Diavolo, casts a silence curse upon him that will last until the wedding ends. Says it is his job to ensure Diavolo becomes king. Nominates Satan for First Consul. Confirms only Barbatos could have broken his barrier. Satan's work made him the clear choice, he and Diavolo have begun slowly trusting each other, and a "generational shift" is necessary for the Devildom. Was content to serve others if it protected his brothers, until he met MC. From now on he obeys nobody (oath presumably ended), and wishes to be with MC of his own free will. Is annoyed by Diavolo calling and wants MC to refuse the call.
• Mammon Lore: furious at Lucifer accepting proposal. Breaks into wedding ceremony with Levi and the others behind them, cheers MC on to object. Enjoys Lucifer's parting threat to the Clauderics.
• Levi Lore: is BIG MAD at Lucifer when he returns from research trip to hear of the wedding. Yells for the cheater to face him, told him he would sink him deeper than Cocytus if he upset MC, shoves Lucifer. When Lucifer accepts proposal, gets BIGGER MAD and starts to summon Lotan. Breaks into wedding ceremony with Mammon and the others behind them. Cries over MC leaving HoL and promises to sink Lucifer to the bottom of the sea if he hurts them.
• Satan Lore: does not wish to hear of his dad's sex life. At House of Lords by Diavolo's request, working as a coordinator for the House and RAD. Uses his contacts to find info on what Clauderics are planning. Interrupts Lucifer being a wedding martyr and calls him on his arrogance and for hurting MC. Openly states the Clauderics have bribed people for votes for the coronation - and that nobles who commit such acts of fraud lose their seat under the House of Lords laws. Agrees with Diavolo that his investigative skills are better than Lucifer's.
• Asmo Lore: is starring in a (romance/tragedy) movie out at the cinema. Is refused a ride by both Mammon and Satan. Furious at Lucifer accepting proposal.
• Beel Lore: his work for the day was bringing Vaermere to RAD. Furious at Lucifer accepting proposal.
• Belphie Lore: felt Lucifer's stars were misaligned lately. A magazine reported he was "booked solid for the next 500 years." Forsees water calamity signs, lucky item umbrella - ie Levi's anger.
• Diavolo Lore: Upcoming coronation, growing power struggle in House of Lords. To become Demon King requires the House of Lords full approval. In exchange for approval he was pressured to offer up Lucifer. Tells Lucifer he does not accept his plan. Lucifer casts a silence curse upon him that Diavolo cannot break(!). When Satan announces the Clauderic crimes, Diavolo thanks him, revealing the curse is broken. Belphie gave him a flower called a khaleesa prior, it slowly absorbs curses. Tells the Clauderic family to swear fealty and this incident will be overlooked. Refers to Lucifer's choice of freedom as a "selfish demand". Says there have been organisational changes, and that since MC has contributed greatly to running RAD, asks would they keep helping with RAD's administration - under the new head, Mephisto.
• Barbatos Lore: features in a newspaper story with Solomon. In the human world. In his absence, House of Lords is running wild. Appears in the House of Lamentation after Lucifer locks everyone inside, reveals Diavolo summoned him, that Solomon's presence is incidental. It is only due to Barbatos lending a hand that the barrier is broken.
• Solomon Lore: features in a newspaper story with Barbatos. In the human world. Originally a nomad. Arrives with Barbatos.
• Luke Lore: returned to Celestial Realm with "others". His warning to MC about Lucifer in season one is replayed - "Never bare your heart to a demon. Especially not to Lucifer."
• Mephisto Lore: appears in demon form to tell Diavolo the horse for the coronation carriage, Vaermere, has arrived. Set to become new head of RAD.
• MC Lore: can tell Lucifer to "stay!" four times. Described as more wilful than Diavolo by Lucifer. Can tell Lucifer he's a big idiot. Refuses Diavolo's job offer but it remains open.
• Magic Lore: Lucifer is capable of magic that Diavolo cannot overcome, but Barbatos can.
• Other Lore: it's been half a year since finishing at RAD. Ristorante Six has a VIP table with a 200-year reservation wait time, Lucifer has a booking ofc.
• First Consul: the Devildom's number two. Highest authority in politics and administration, overseeing laws, ceremonies, diplomacy, and order. Diavolo's former role as acting king. Once Diavolo ascends the throne he has the right to appoint an official First Consul.
• Devildom Foods: chimera milk nougat, devil chocolate chip pancakes, hellfire rose jam, dark-boar sandwiches.
• Magical Creatures: Vaermere (see Satan's Route) - vær is an old word with various meanings from ram to weather to tranquil, while mere is seen more commonly in place names as it refers to a body of water (hence where Shadowmere arises from). "Calm waters" is perhaps a fitting name for a trusted horse. It also just sounds like mare.
• Magical Flora: Khaleesa - perhaps referring to the Arabic word khālisa which means pure and exclusive.
• Background Characters: Clauderic family - nobles around since time of Demon Kings past, ruthless. Plan to use Lucifer as a pawn via political marriage. Opposes policy of harmony with human world. Anti-RAD and anti-Diavolo behind closed doors. They believe by winning over the First Consul they can influence the entire Devildom. Lucifer must accept proposal or Diavolo will not become king, and old Demon King's disappearance will be blamed on Diavolo, the brothers, and MC.
Demon King - Diavolo's father and former ruler, has been missing for over half a year, known only to a select few. Clauderic family are aware and using the info as blackmail for Lucifer to accept proposal.
• Historical Notes: Clauderic has no precise match but is reminiscent of the influential Claudius patrician house of ancient Rome, spanning five emperors with the Julio-Claudian dynasty (from Caesar's adopted heir Augustus to... Nero), noted for their "pride and arrogance, and intense hatred of the commonalty". This latter point is interesting, to so despise the common people, as an old theory on Diavolo's heritage is that his mother was perhaps a human or at least non-noble. The fact that there is currently an "uproar" regarding his horns (see Satan's route) could be broadly related - if not just royal gossip, an implication that his horns give away his (lesser) bloodline. The only other noble demon we see is Mephisto, and his horns are very different...
• Mythology Notes: Cocytus, which the other hall of residence is also named for, is the river of wailing and lamentation that branches from the Styx to flow into the Acheron, the river of woe, in the underworld. It appears in Dante's Inferno as the frozen lake of the ninth circle where Satan is imprisoned, the circle of treachery - precisely what Levi accuses Lucifer of.
~
💳 Mammon
• Mammon Lore: workplace possibly called Devil's Fight 666. Death Phoenix is the "deadly, immortal" undefeated winner. Emceeing began as a light gig but he is raking in the cash. Is a Demonus addict fan. Calls MC "dumb dumb" if they nearly set him on fire, but also says MC is the only one who can call him dumb. Ready to protect MC immediately. Recognises Beel as fake because the real Beel knows Mammon is far stronger. Overcomes pride and insecurity. RAD is the place most dear to him according to his memories, and MC and his family what matters most to him - not money. Breaks out of fake world by using his own memories of MC.
• Lucifer Lore: has private word with Mammon. Knows Mammon is about to propose, and keeps interruptions at bay.
• Levi Lore: wants to buy all 666 blind acrylic stands from Ruri-chan's bridal event. Knows about 2D husbandos.
• Satan Lore: is First Consul.
• Asmo Lore: is Press Secretary. Has rings he designed on sale.
• Diavolo Lore: upcoming coronation. Seems a little depressed. Recently invited to a wedding.
• Barbatos Lore: travelling with Solomon, hasn't been heard from in a month or two.
• Luke Lore: is in Celestial Realm.
• MC Lore: can tell Mammon to "stay!" twice in a row, threaten to not let him touch them for a week. Summons Mammon fully as soon as danger strikes. Uses magic in teamwork with Mammon. Hits Mammon (no choice given). Commands Mammon to sit/stay again.
• Magic Lore: spiked Demonus from an enemy of Mammon puts him and MC in a fake RAD built out of his own memories (and insecurities). None of the fake brother shenanigans are lore. The fake reality literally has doors you have to pay cash to open - I guess Mammon's nightmare is micro-transactions too!
• Other Lore: RAD Times used to be seen as a "dumb tabloid".
