hm. it's s3 era zewis posting time. hello
your name is zane joseph bennett. it's actually zane joseph harrison bennett but you omit your father's name every chance you get because you are your own man and you don't need your father's name to get ahead. to build a life. your life. a man lays his own foundations; if he doesn't, how can he trust in its stability?
your childhood friend emma tells you a person can't judge a son by his father's sins but you disagree. the sin you carry is a grime you can't wash off your skin. you know your blood is tainted by greed and sometimes when you hold cash in your hand you wish your ex girlfriend would set it alight with her magic mermaid powers. she would, if you asked. you're kind of friends again. it's tentative. civil. you love her so much that every time you catch the blue of her eyes in your gaze your heart feels bruised.
you stand behind the bar in the cafe you bought her and wipe down the counters. the waning crescent moon is high and neon light spills into the dark through beaded curtains. the cafe is filled with music and light and so much life and you have never felt more alone. its friday night. you're working to keep the cafe afloat another month. the numbers are in the red still, but improving slowly but surely. you want to keep the momentum going. after closing, you will go home alone to an empty apartment filled with expensive things your purchased to fill the deep chasm in the core of you.
your friend lewis's laughter suddenly rings through the room like sunlight and birdsong and wind through the eucalyptus trees and you see him and bella hartley and their little ragtag rock band on stage. rehearsals are over now, the music done, the crowd thinning out, and there is a dark-haired bassist who looks like the sort of rockstar your childhood friend nate thinks he is. he is leaning in close to lewis and pressing his big, silver-ring-heavy hands into his narrow hips and saying something low in his ear, grinning, and you feel anger flood you because you are jealous. you want to be that free, too. you dream of kissing other men sometimes but the thought of so much as holding the hand of another man in public sends terror up your spine. it does not fit the image of yourself you have long-since made. kissing boys is not part of your foundation.
lewis laughs again, open and bright, like the world hasn't kicked his teeth in more times than not. like he's never sat in the cafe office while rikki staunched the bleeding of his broken nose and soothed his black eye with heat. lewis leans into this bassist's touch with a telling familiarity that you can only dream of and huh. that's an odd thought, isn't it?
you wipe down juice-stained glasses and survey the room. cleo and rikki are locked arm in arm, dancing without music now, laughing. two best friends with the world on the edge of their pretty fingertips. they beckon bella over and she dances across the room, vibrant, a star, honey-blonde hair swinging, while the rest of the band cleans up. she is well beloved. a cafe favorite. lord, what would you do without her and the band?
you watch the new bassist pull lewis through the much smaller crowd. there is an aggressiveness there. a possessiveness you envy. you watch him and lewis disappear through those godawful ugly beads and into the dark and you know while you're lying alone in bed later you will think of this moment because lewis has been stuck in your head a lot lately. he is warm and optimistic and resilient in a way you can't understand. he is handsome in a way you—
it's late. you should go home soon. the party is over.
