I am completely past due in posting anything. With voice memos on my phone and photos ready to go, time has moved to the present, yet I must document my past.
Perhaps once again you are changing format, even if just for today. Today feels like a memoir. What is a memoir, anyway? An account, a record, of things gone by. All things gone by bring us to this very moment. Why not document them? It is a continual bank of moments in an endless vault until we leave our bodies. If we pay attention, which most of us don't, we may build on those moments, or at least acknowledge they existed.

My mother's birthday. 83 years.
Walking my dogs. Collie got freaked by the mailman on a walk. His mail cart spooked him. Sounds or movements sometimes do. He knicked the mailman, which is uncharacteristic of him. Mailman okay but I was jittery about the whole thing.

Sitting in car parked in front of gym. I'm contemplative and talkative. It is a different experience listening to oneself and transcribing from there. I now have to paraphrase as closely as I can, what I said. It was summer. I had much free time. School was out and I don't work over the summer. Each summer I experiment with online dating. This summer was no different. My experiment lasts two weeks.
" I e-mail back and forth and it is a rare instance that I make a date. I go back and forth in my mind. I say I want to meet someone and inwardly I say I don't. Â I say I don't want to meet someone because I like my life the way it is. Or, is it because I am so jaded to make a relationship work, or enter into one, or afraid to get close."
I did meet someone who I did not linger online with and got to the phone call stage quicker than usual. Fellow writer, we laughed a lot. I e-mailed him my articles. He said he knew someone who could help me with my book . I felt so Hollywood. Could that really happen? Couple of dates, laughter, faded away. Â

Parked on Gregory and Swall about to go into the nail salon. Once again in the car and taking a journey back to
a life gone by. I was two blocks from where I lived when the kids were young and growing up. We lived in the house on La Peer. I know this route well.
"I want to go back to that time when I was walking those streets, a mother with two young kids, raising them married and single. I was divorced while living in that house. It was a sweet time because they were young, we did sweet things together. Things you can do when they are young. Things you can't do when they're older, because they move on, to their friends, away to their lives.  I am looking at this street which has not changed in ten years. Remembering the sweetness about it. We takes those moments, those sweet images of our lives and we put them in out hearts, minds, memories, and we pull them out, they come out in an instant, when we are parked in that familiar place and there will be a bittersweet pang that we can't relive those moments. Good, bad, indifferent, those are the moments that make up the fabric of our lives. End of entry.
Yom Kippur Saturday, October 8, 2011 4:21PMÂ
A thing with my son over timing of evening services. We ended up not spending Break Fast together. Me very sad, crying. Hearing that same played over despair I go through. Such pleading desperation in my voice, to myself, no one else. A hurt that I feel, an unreconciled acceptance of my life as it is.Â
Listening to myself just a few days ago, today is October 10, I know the different chattering/s going on in my mind is what keeps the circle going round. The unsettled mind has no rest and tricks us into thinking things are not the way they are supposed to be, but in a way where we become frozen and despaired.
Things are the way they are supposed to be, because it they were not, they wouldn't be the way they are. Could they be improved upon? Â %#$@ yea! Â The how part needs to be worked on. Â The ready part does, too. Â The reasons: two important ones, and myself.
Monday, October 10, 2011 3:12pm.
Up to date. Â Work closed today. The exhaustion is given permission to settle upon me. I'm not an autopilot person. An early bird I have never been. In college I wrote a poem about being a night bird. When the alarm rings at 5:50am I cringe. My body wants to pull my mind back under the covers and wish the snooze turn into Saturday, or is it my mind pulling my body. The body-mind synergy.
I close for now. Intentions set to visit again soon.Â

THE BENEFITS OF YOGA FOR CHILDREN

"School's Out for Summer"....Alice Cooper
Beverly Hills High Schoolâs summer classes ended on Friday, August 5. For all the boys and girls who attended summer school, you can breathe a sigh of relief. School is not out forever, as Alice Cooper would like you to think. The fall semester resumes again on Tuesday, September 6.
With a four week break the question is what to do. Sleeping late is on the agenda. Going to the beach or a friendâs pool is a fun and relaxing way to keep cool and go back to school with a tan. Perhaps a long awaited family get-a-way is in the making. Summer jobs help pay for much wanted cars, gas, movies, and fall clothes. Going to the gym is a healthy way to stay in shape while working out with friends. Sports Club LA on Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills is home to many Beverly Hills High School students. The boys love to bench press while the girls love the aerobics or spin classes.
Students in Advanced Placement English do have a list of summer reading which has to be completed by the first day of school. Time management is the best way not to have to read three or four books one week before school starts.
The Cross Country Team continues conditioning throughout August with a short break. Please check with your coach as to when the break is.
Parents of students on school sports must download from the school website forms regarding medical clearance and other Athletic Participation Forms. The drop down menu will direct you to the Athletic Forms.
All parents must download Back to School Forms per the grade level of the student.

High school is an exciting time. The transition from teen to adult is most apparent after age sixteen when kids can get their driverâs license. Driving is a rite of passage. Parents are no longer needed to transport their child to parties, friendâs houses, or sports events. Driving opens the door to freedom.
Driving also has its hazards. The law is very specific for new drivers under the age of 18, whose license is considered provisional. When your child becomes 18 the provisional part of the license ends.
A minor must be at least 16 years old and have finished both driver education and driver training, and have their permit for at least six months before taking their license test. Parents are required to supervise their child a minimum of 50 hours of driving practice in addition to the formal driving training.
Once your child receives the license the law is very clear-cut as to the rules.
During the first 12 months after the teen is licensed, he or she cannot drive between the hours of 11PM and 5AM. Most importantly they cannot transport passengers under the age of 20, unless accompanied by a licensed parent or guardian, a licensed driver 25 years of age or older, or a licensed certified driving instructor. There are exceptions which can be found on the DMV website.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm#FIRSTYEAR
The 2011 California Driver Handbook states:Â 15-19 years old have the highest traffic conviction, collision, and injury rates of any age group. Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for teens.Â
Driving friends around illegally can only contribute to these statistics. Distractions do not make for safe driving. Teens are driving their friends around. Taking a spin in the car is a summer activity.
Parents please help your teen enjoy what is left of summer. Encourage safe habits and monitor their activities, in all areas. Teens are both adults and children. It is the child part that needs firm guidance. Keep your child and other parentâs children safe. Donât let your teen drive their friends any place.
Enjoy a safe summer.Â

Yoga is a personal practice of self-realization which unites our ability to stop, look, and listen to our inner voice devoid of the clutter that clouds our minds and distorts our perceptions about ourselves, our potential, and the circumstances which make up the fabric of our lives. It gives us the opportunity to meet the person in the mirror.
Om is the sound makes when the world is in perfect harmony. Â Find the Om in your life.
Yoga Basics from Om In The Home - The Significance of OM
The Bhagavad Gita, one of the ancient Indian scriptures, a core text of the Hindu literary tradition describes the word Om in chapter 17, verse 23. The three words which represent Brahman (the absolute) are: Om Tat Sat. Om is the Truth. Tat means that. Sat means truth. Om, the manifestation of the absolute truth denoted with the capital letter 'T', takes form as the unspoken sound, OM. Om is sometimes called pranava, one that hums. Hence the sound we are familiar with as the "ommmm". This hum is the very first word, the first sound. We can say this represents god. We can say this represents the highest connection to consciousness, to the infinite. The idea of 'first' links us to the idea of creation, something grander and larger than our daily surroundings. Something that is non dualistic as the word and sound are one in the same. When there is no duality there is only the truth of the matter, there is simply what is. Om lives in all of us. The "Om in the home", this non dual state, the perfect truth and harmony resides in all of us, ready to be detected. The detection, the realization of this truth is knowledge. Enjoying the knowledge, this Self knowledge leads to bliss and a fulfilling life.
National Holidays Do Not Need to Bring Single Life Blues
Marie from When Harry Met Sally: âBut you guys were a couple, you had someone to go places with, you had a date on national holidays.â
It is a cliché to say single life is a challenge.
With Labor Day approaching the edginess sets in as to what to do.
If you have kids to spend the day with or a âsomeoneâ in your life then this article may help a friend.
For those who donât and have no plans whatsoever letâs explore options and feelings.
Society is couple-minded. There are times of the year, and they revolve around holidays, that family and friend gather to celebrate. The awareness of being single might weigh heavier on you at those times. You might ask yourself, âwhy me?â
Finding someone to date or become serious with takes work. How does it happen?
Make a concerted effort is to find activities where people gather: social circles, clubs, museums, libraries, bars, and dog parks. Internet matchmaking sites and professional matchmakers are options for the very busy. Facebook lists some interesting events.
Is it easier to find someone if you are younger, maybe under 40?
In a youth oriented society younger seems to offer more options if you are a woman. Men fare better as traditionally men date and marry women younger or at least the same age.
That has been my personal experience, especially after 50.
We all get set in our ways, past disappointments get in the way while time slips away.
Joining an online matchmaking site, might find you in a new relationship on Labor Day. Donât settle so as not to be alone. That is a dating, âno-noâ.
Spending time with you can be lonely and unsettling, yet beneficial.
Embrace your time alone and do something you like, that you havenât done because youâve been too busy. Enjoying your own company is the beginning. When you can do that and be contented you become more attractive to anyone you may meet. No one wants to meet someone who is desperate.
Here are some ideas how you can pamper yourself this Labor Day or any day off.
Indulge yourself with a long luxurious massage of your choice at

Gay Rights Prevail in the Summer of 2011
Beverly Hills High School graduate Gannon Baxter is proud to be a gay American.
On July 14, 2011 California became the first state to require school districts to teach gay history as part of the social studies curriculum.
On June 24, 2011 Governor Cuomo of New York signed a bill legalizing gay marriage. The law took effect 30 days later on July 24.
New York has joined five other states in legalizing gay marriage.
On July 22, 2011, âDonât Ask, Donât Tellâ, the United States policy barring openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual persons from serving in the military, has been repealed. The repeal will go into effect 60 days after the date of certification on September 20, 2011.
Gannon Baxter is 18 years old. He graduated Beverly Hills High School on June 24, 2011.
Moving from high school to college and beyond is both an exciting and apprehensive time for all young adults. Friends promise to keep in touch as life moves them in different directions. The safety net of coddling parents and teachers soon fades into the background of grown-up life. âThe joy is in the journeyâ is a hopeful mantra for finding oneâs niche and enjoying a life of harmony and prosperity.
Thirty plus years ago, Baxter would have had a difficult time moving through the maze of adult life.
His aspiration is to graduate college with a degree in school psychology. Baxter is an outgoing and compassionate individual of good character. His insight into human nature would enhance his ability to guide young people as they travel the road to adulthood.
To reach his goal, Baxter would have had to pretend he was someone he is not.
 Gannon Baxter is gay.
âI would say that I knew I was a little bit different than other people. I tried to hide it as best as I could when I was younger but after a while I decided that I would rather people see me as the human being I am and not the person I portrayed while I was still closeted.â
Anti-gay sentiment is the same discrimination Blacks, Jews, women, and people with cognitive and mental disabilities have suffered for centuries. The conventional mold needed to be broken to include everyone in the melting pot of equality.
âIt was literally the best decision of my life to come out of the closet. I was sick to death of hiding. After a while I didnât really care too much about what other people thought about me.â
Luckily for Baxter and other young gay adults the world is changing for the better.Â
âI think that if they taught gay history in my middle school while I was still there, and obviously it would be taught in a positive aspect then I most likely would have come out earlier. But, after I came out some of my friends told me that they knew, they always knew and it was ok. And most people at my school knew as well, so I guess I didnât do a good job at hiding it.â
  There are still challenges.
âIt doesnât really bother me when people say fag, queer or homo because in life you have to pick your battles and I really donât feel like they need my attention and energy when some people say those things. Ignorant people need to wake up and get with the program it is 2011 not 1975 the world is changing and some people are gay. Get over it.â
Baxter is looking ahead as he enters college. Like most college kids his aspirations include graduating with high standing, working in his chosen field, and one day raising a family. Baxter does not want to be seen as a promiscuous homosexual man. He wants what most of us want, âthe white picket fenceâ, leaving single life behind to enjoy monogamous life with that special someone.
As the pendulum swings to the positive for the gay population hopefully by the time Baxter begins to raise a family he can take his in vows in California.
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness should be open to all who seek it out.

Beauty is Never Skin-Deep
The fantasy begins every time a woman opens a beauty magazine. Long tousled curls fall perfectly over suntanned shoulders.
Sultry lips merely enhance the inner âcome hitherâ confidence we all yearn for.
Thumbing the pages we look for what make-up best suits our skin tone and what colors lie ahead for winter. If by chance there is a recipe, we tear it out.Â
Oh, the plight of the âeverydayâ woman.
Red light! Stop, look, listen! It doesnât have to be that way.
We can all enhance our outer appearance. It is the first thing we see in the morning mirror.
Say hello to plumped-up lips. Say goodbye to frown lines. Laser away the days before SPF. The right clothes hide a multitude of sins. Eating healthy is a given. Walking after work is a wonderful stress buster.Â
We have another beauty. One that is more subtle and overlooked in the hustle bustle of life. The inner beauty is psychological and more difficult to tap into.
 The recipe is simple.
Go to yoga. The standard complaint, âI canât do that, itâs too hard, itâs too boringâ. Yes, you can!Â
Start slow, gestation takes nine months. Give yourself six. Find a class that fits your experience level and commit to go three times a week. Make it a priority. Tell your boyfriend, husband or kids that it will make you a better, happier person.
Yoga is not a fashion show. The first rule is âleave your ego at the doorâ.
Stick to your budget. Yoga clothes are close to the body so as not to get in the way of the postures. You can find what you need at most department stores, Target, Gap, Nike, Roots, yoga studios, and other stores that sell athletic clothing.
For hygienic reasons, I recommend you buy your own mat. The more cushion the better, but not squishy.Â
Bring water and a towel, now youâre ready. Let the instructor know youâre new to yoga and if you have any prior injuries or health issues.
Listen carefully to the instructions, watch others when you get confused, and leave your impatience at the door with your ego.
Yoga will strengthen your body from the inside out. I have had men in my classes who canât hold the top of a push up, called plank pose. When was the last time you did a push-up? Youâll learn in yoga. Great core work!
Your muscles will elongate. Imagine tying your laces without bending your knees. If you donât own shoes with laces drop a pen and pick it up. Did you bend your legs? Your hamstrings and lower back are married. They fight with each other when one or the other, or both are tight. When they loosen up they have a much better relationship. Your hips will be thankful, too. Theyâre caught in the middle. Sounds like an analogy for life.
As you progress yoga works every body part, comprehensively.Â
The first two ingredients to this new beauty regime are breath and focus. It quiets the mind so you can attend to your movements without wondering whose texting on your silenced phone. Focus means listen to  your instructor and your body will follow and do what it can. Stop when you need to. Competition is left at the door with ego and impatience.
Each time you go, you get stronger, bendier, and more confident. After a while your body takes âshapeâ. The âyoga bodyâ is lean, tight, and defined. Love handles dissolve when you have a consistent triangle and reverse warrior practice.
Beauty is born from the inside out.
Sprinkled with humorous axioms or obvious truisms, class becomes a place where you mentally deconstruct your patterned thinking about life outside those doors. The clichĂ© âbody-mindâ becomes a nuance for self-love and self-acceptance.
Add a side of meditation to dust out the cobwebs and any stray thoughts.
Voila! The refurbished you will strut your newfound beauty.
Maintenance has already discarded ego, impatience, and competition. Youâll have less to carry home.
Now that youâve decided to give it a try, where do you go?
In and around the Beverly Hills area, yoga is offered at the various health clubs.
The Sports Club LA at 9601 Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills offers upwards of 30 classes a week.
LA Fitness Health Club offers yoga classes throughout the day at three locations within a four mile distance from Beverly Hills: 10921 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, 5950 Wilshire Blvd in the Miracle Mile section of Los Angeles, and 1833 S, La Cienega Blvd in Los Angeles.
Equinox Health Club at 10220 Constellation Blvd in Century City offers morning, afternoon and evening yoga classes throughout the week.
Many yoga practitioners who choose not to belong to a health club opt to take classes at local yoga studios. Yoga Works at 1256 Westwood Blvd in Westwood and Rising Lotus Yoga at 13557 Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks offer a variety of classes for all levels. Both studios are within the Beverly Hills range.
Roxbury Memorial Park at 471 Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills offers senior, beginner, intermediate, and chair yoga classes for the 55 plus age group. If you are under 55 and have never practiced yoga before, the intermediate class might be a good place to start to stretch out muscles that have not been used for a while.
Private yoga instructors are another choice for people who are not comfortable in a group class situation. The lessons are tailor made and comprehensive. Before hiring a private teacher ask who they studied under, where they did their Teacher Training, and are they registered with Yoga Alliance. Private yoga lessons range in price and can go as high as $100/hour. Discuss your needs and your budget with the teacher. Flexibility is not just for tight muscles.
You can locate a private instructor is several ways: word of mouth, community bulletin boards at Whole Foods, specialty stores that sell yoga clothes, ask a teacher whose class you like if he/she teaches private clients, or contact one of the yoga organizations.
Enjoy the journey into the world of inner beauty.
Namaste.
The End of Military Gay Ban - A Step Towards Equality for All
Breaking from Newsmax.com
Panetta to OK End of Military Gay Ban
WASHINGTON â Pentagon chief Leon Panetta has decided to end the ban on gays serving openly in the armed services and certify that repealing the 17-year-old prohibition will not hurt the military's ability to fight, officials said Thursday.
His decision, which was expected, comes two weeks after the chiefs of the military services told Panetta that ending the ban would not affect military readiness. Dismantling the ban fulfills a 2008 campaign promise by President Barack Obama, who helped usher the repeal through Congress and signed it into law late last December.
But the move also drew vehement opposition from some in Congress and initial reluctance from military leaders, who worried that it could cause a backlash and erode troop cohesion on the battlefield.
Defense officials said the announcement will be made Friday afternoon. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision had not been made public.
President Barack Obama is also expected to certify the change. Repeal of the ban would become effective 60 days after certification, which could open the military to gays by the end of September. The law setting the stage for repeal required the defense secretary to certify that lifting the ban would not harm military readiness.
The so-called don't ask, don't tell policy, was adopted during the Clinton administration and has come under an onslaught of legal challenges, including a federal court ruling in early July that ordered the federal government to immediate stop enforcing the gay ban.
Days later, however, the Obama administration appealed the ruling, saying that abruptly ending the ban would complicate the orderly process for repeal that had already be set in motion.
A San Francisco appeals court agreed but added a caveat: The government cannot investigate, penalize or discharge anyone for being openly gay.
The military services have conducted extensive internal studies and about five months of training to gauge how troops would react to the change. A survey of U.S. troops last year found that some two-thirds didn't care if the ban is lifted. Opposition to the repeal was strongest among combat troops, particularly Marines.
But as training has gone on this year, senior military leaders have said they've seen no real problems.
Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who retired at the end of June, told The Associated Press in an interview that he saw no roadblocks to the repeal and that people had been "mildly and pleasantly surprised at the lack of pushback in the training."
The bulk of the military has been trained on the new law, including a complex swath of details about how the change will or will not affect housing, transfers or other health and social benefits. In most cases, the guidelines demand that gays and lesbians be treated just like any other soldier, sailor, airman or Marine.
There will be differences, however, since same sex partners will not be given the same housing and other benefits as married couples. Instead, they more often will be treated like unmarried couples.

Let's turn our car culture into a walking culture.

âWalking is manâs best medicine.â - Hippocrates
Carmageddon has come and gone. I was in New York on vacation and missed all the hoopla. Although the Big Apple has its share of gridlock like any other metropolitan city, there exists a walking culture that is as prominent as our car culture.
Now that I am home in Beverly Hills, I want to keep up the long city walks that I enjoyed in New York.
Walking is free, once you buy your shoes and bottle of water. It also strengthens the heart, reduces body weight and the risk of diabetes, increases bone density and improves cardiovascular capacity. The list goes on.
When youâre feeling blue, put your sneakers on and go. Breathe steadily, focus on your surroundings and let your feet guide you to alleviate symptoms of depression.
Iâve put together five walking routes that offer easy-to-difficult options and begin at different parts of the city. All these walks can be modified for time, distance, variety and intensity.Â
Rules for the walk: stretch before and after, bring water, stop when you need to, wear sunscreen, socks, a hat and bring your cell phone.
Happy Trails!
Walk #1 â Each Angle Is Right: This is the perfect early morning âget me upâ or after work âchill out.â Beverly Hills is a grid. From your front door, turn right. Go for time or distance as you take four more rights to make a rectangle. Make it a mild or moderate walk based on pace.
Walk #2 â The Window Shopping Strut: This is for walkers who like flat sidewalks, city streets and lots of stores. It's a mild-to-moderate walk depending on speed, time and the distance you live from the golden triangle shopping district. Start at Wilshire Boulevard and North Rodeo Drive, head north to Santa Monica Boulevard, cross the street and walk east along Beverly Gardens Park, then make a right turn at North Crescent Drive and head south back to Wilshire.
Walk #3â The Doheny Drive Challenge: Walk to Doheny Drive from wherever you live. Doheny is uphill north of Santa Monica Boulevard. The goal is Sunset Boulevard. If you live very close to Sunset, walk downhill towards Wilshire Boulevard and beyond, then turn back up. If you make it to Olympic Boulevard, stop at Starbucks on the corner of South Doheny Drive and Olympic for an iced latte. This is a challenging walk that can be modified based on your level of fitness.
Walk #4 â Alice in 90210 Land: The are plenty of steep hills for walkers who live north of Sunset Boulevard or walkers who want to park and walk. Take Benedict Canyon Drive from Sunset north to Angelo Drive and then back down. Or take North Beverly Drive from Sunset up to Coldwater Canyon Park.
Walk #5 â The Gas Guzzlerâs Enemy: With gas prices upwards of $4 a gallon, we can all do little things to help the environment, save money and stay fit. Walk to the bank, post office or nail salon. Encourage your kids to walk to school or to their friendsâ houses.
See you around the neighborhood!
. Â
