Founded by Azha (left) & Apryl (right), Shade was cultivated out of a friendship between two creative people who saw a void in the world of internet art.

Shade Magazine is a multimedia space for up & coming, young artists. Since our start in 2014 we are happy to have helped in successfully paving the way for other online zines to be created and run by yung people of color.

We’re collecting book donations for an exchange library during the Black Art Incubator residency project at Recess Art in SoHo this month. On July 28th, they’ll be having a reception and book swap, and we’re looking to get a great little library going for the audience. Can you help out? What do you make?

I'm interested in American History and what it does to the rest of the world.

Have you been involved with BHQFU previously?

I have audited many classes over the years, but I was never consistently a student. Last year I had the distinguished honor of being a judge in "Chopped, Except That It's Art Chopped with Sean J Patrick Carney" not only once but twice.

What are you most excited for in the MFU?

I'm excited to develop the class I will teach in the spring. It is loosely based on the types of conversations that are had AFTER a lecture by a visiting artist when you meet them for a drink.

What do you make?

I make art that uses shifts in context to relate otherwise disparate elements in culture. I also make memes.

Have you been involved with BHQFU previously?

I took the class Chopped, Except That It's Art Chopped last winter and won.

What are you most excited for in the MFU?

I'm very excited to create a curriculum and teach. Having space to create an environment of constructive information exchange is a huge honor.

What do you make?

I make objects and images that are usually about contradictions, which attempt to be cute, angst-y and mysterious simultaneously. I also do some performance to release transgressive energy that is bottled up in daily life.

Have you been involved with BHQFU previously?

I took Performance with Joe Kay and Emma McMillan in 2014. In 2016, I had work in the group exhibition TIMESHARE curated by the FUG Fellows.

What are you most excited for in the MFU?

I'm excited for the inspiration of being around other artists in a workspace. I've been working in semi-isolation for too long!

What do you make?

I make landscapes, poetry, sculpture and video from a collection of found documents that range from the bureaucratic to the domestic.

Have you been involved with BHQFU previously?

This year, I participated in the BHQFUBF (Book Fair) with EYELEVEL BQE. A couple of years ago, I attended Elizabeth Jaeger’s Sculpture class.

What are you most excited for in the MFU?

I’m excited to share my studio practice and process through weekly meetings and critiques with fellow residents and staff. I’m also really excited to teach next spring at BHQFU, and to be a part of its community.

FUG Fellow Joygill Moriah (Happenings Contemporary) presents [PEOPLE POWERED], the final spring program of their curatorial residency to coincide with Internet Week New York.

FREE four-month studio residency at Interstate Projects in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Interstate Projects is initiating a new studio residency program that will grant one artist a free 300 square foot studio space for a four-month period on site at the gallery. There are three residency periods that are open to artists based in the USA and internationally.* This is an open submission residency that will be selected by a juried panel. Interstate Projects Studio Program has been created to support artists in the face of unsustainable demands made by real estate and market effects on studio practices. Through this program, artists will have the opportunity to nurture experimentation and the conceptual incubation of ideas. This residency will give artists access to creative resources and networks in New York and its surrounding area through studio visits, critiques and introductions made through Interstate Projects’ network of peers.

Interstate Projects Studio Program is an expansion of the gallery’s mission to nurture, challenge and push artist’s abilities within a healthy and un-capitalized zone of experimentation.
