The faint blue light from the bug zapper illuminates the room around me; silver counter tops nailed onto old wooden shelves, the stainless steel industrial sized fridge, and freshly mopped red brick floors. The smell of bleach and onions fills my lungs sticking onto my skin and clothes refusing to leave..

This is my life.

23 years old and mopping the floors of the same pizza restaurant my mom has worked at for 12 years. In five days, I will be 24. One year short of a quarter of a century years old. I’ve never been one to plan out my future, but I’ve always imagined my life at this point filled with a sense of fulfillment, wonder, and accomplishment.

The lights and smells around me are not the ones I dream of; I long for the scent of coffee early in the morning, and the lights of the city spilling into my open apartment window. I am at ease, no mental preparation for the day ahead, no dreading the time to clock in. I love my job. I love my life. I love my home.

What a cliché

Maybe one day I will get there. No, not maybe, Someday I will. But for now, Its closing time at the Pizza Shop and its time to go home.
